Are you thinking that AppleCare covers owner abuse? It doesn't. The TAC for AppleCare gives Apple broad authority to either reject a claim that might be the result of reckless use of the product, or to subject the claim to a service fee. The vague yet complex terms of these extended warranty policies put all of the authority to determine what is covered into the hands of the company. People who buy these policies should know that, and also know that they are huge profit centers for the sellers.

I understand that. However, AppleCare Plus allows up to two cases of "accidental coverage" which tells me if they drop their phone and crack a screen I can take it in have it repaired under said policy for the $79.00 fee. Yes they are rough on their phones they have cases on them but they don't abuse them just because. They just don't handle em with care like you and I do.
 
Just buy your device with an AMEX and they cover your for pretty much everything in regards to your purchase up to the price you paid for your device. That's for an additional year out side of the manufacturer's warranty. But if you break it and Apple replaces/fixes your phone and charge your for it. You just file a claim and get back that money and you have up to the total cost to recover from them if needed.

Screw these paid insurance policies from stores and manufacturers. All rip offs.
 
Incorrect. With iOS devices it was also a year, for standard AppleCare by calling AppleCare directly. It was 30 days for AppleCare+.

AppleCare was cheaper and for people who aren't clumsy, it was a better deal. This is yet another Tim Cook era money grab.

All iOS and Macs get AppleCare by default. If you want AppleCare+ you have a year for Macs, and now 60 days for iOS.
 
It's no surprise Apple is opening up the enrollment window. Extended warranties like Apple Care are highly profitable. A lot of buyers can't stomach spending another $99 immediately after spending $200-900 on their iDevice, but give them a little more time to digest the bill + a scary last minute "are you covered" email and I bet Apple herds in a few more sheep. Free money for Apple.

But statistically, unless the buyer is a complete klutz or abuses his or her items it always a better bet to "self insure" against accidents and rely on a CC's free extended warranty for actual product failures. (Yes, yes, I know you all have your personal tales of how an extended warranty here or there paid for itself in spades. But the odds are against you and for the house in the long term just like at a Vegas craps table.

And the problem is, if you are a complete klutz who abuses their products, Apple can choose to not honor the policy. It's bad enough that we are subjected to agreeing to complex and unfavorable (to us) TAC and license agreements for so many things we do today. I have a hard time understanding why anyone would subject themselves to another one voluntarily. The headache factor alone argues against it.

3.2 Accidental Damage from Handling
If during the Plan Term you submit a valid claim notifying Apple that the Covered iPhone has failed due to accidental damage from handling (“ADH”), Apple will subject to the service fee described below either (i) repair the defect using new or refurbished parts that are equivalent to new in performance and reliability, or (ii) exchange the Covered iPhone with a replacement product that is new or equivalent to new in performance and reliability, and is at least functionally equivalent to the original product (both individually known as a “Service Event”). ADH coverage will expire and all of Apple’s obligations to you under this section 3.2 will be fulfilled in its entirety before the end of the Plan Term when Apple, as a result of ADH claims, has provided to you two (2) Service Events. ADH coverage only applies to an operational or mechanical failure caused by an accident from handling that is the result of an unexpected and unintentional external event (e.g., drops and liquid contact) that arises from your normal daily usage of the Covered iPhone as intended for such Covered iPhone. ADH coverage does not include (a) protection against normal wear and tear, theft, misplacement, reckless, abusive, willful or intentional conduct associated with handling and use of the Covered iPhone, (b) protection against any other act or result not covered by the Plan, as described in Section 4.2 below, or (c) any resultant damage to the Covered iPhone that arises from one or more conditions described in Section 3.2(a) or (b). You will pay a $49 (U.S.) dollar service fee plus applicable tax for each ADH claim, and may be asked to provide an explanation of where and when the accident occurred with a detailed description of the actual event. A claim will be denied if you fail to pay the service fee or fail to provide information relating to the accident when asked.

(ii) The Plan does not apply to damage caused by (a) a product that is not the Covered iPhone, (b) abuse, misuse, fire, earthquake or other external causes except as described in section 3.2 above, (c) operating the Covered iPhone outside the permitted or intended uses described by the manufacturer, or (d) service (including upgrades and expansions) if such was performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (“AASP”).

Do you really want to get into an argument with Apple over the definition of "an unexpected and unintentional external event" or "normal wear and tear, theft, misplacement, reckless, abusive, willful or intentional conduct"?

I'd pay extra just to avoid it, my life being complicated enough as it is.
 
its worth it for me on the iPhone. I've had issues with most of them in year two, and I just go in, and they replace it on the spot. Ill pay $100 every two years for that.
 
Honestly, if this doesn't cover theft, it's not worth it to me. Most of these phones are repairable in a service center if something goes wrong with them for the same price as the deductible. AT&T's plan covers theft, but it's $84 a year, so it's hard to say if that's worth it, especially considering you still need to pay a deductible. I guess it all comes down to how expensive is your phone unsubsidized. At $800 it might be worth it, but $400, the risk is much less.
 
Does it rub anybody else wrong that you have to pay to enroll and the have to pay for incident replacement? And that they limit it to 2? And doesn't and out of warranty iPhone replacement cost $199 (16 GB)? It used to. This just doesn't seem like a great deal to me.
To add to that, when you get a replacement under Applecare you get a refurb unit, not a new unit. No big deal, except that refurb units are identifiable by their part number. I went into Best Buy to trade in an old iP5 (yeah, I know. But I wanted quick satisfaction and not a week long turn around via Gazzelle or whatever). They looked up my unit, asked if I had ever used a warranty claim, I did, then they showed me on their screen how my unit was unacceptable because it was a refurb. At least Applecare could obfuscate the part numbers so I could treat my phone like a new unit and not carry with it the stigma (???) of being a refurb, which I never even realized existed. So if you do have to use Appelcare, insist on a repair rather than replacement if you can. IMHO.

I'm pretty sure you are getting a warranty claim. Not using Applecare. For Applecare, there is a, what $80?, fee for the new unit IN ADDITION to the initial purchase of the Applecare coverage. An as I said above, it is not a new unit but a refurb.

Doesn't this only apply if you buy the extended warranty as well with your AmEx and then your device incurs a repair cost within a year of the extended warranty expiring?
 
So...if I want coverage for accidental loss and "Oh, no" I'll have to pay $99 for AppleCare AND $50+ for theft /loss coverage from the carrier :rolleyes:

Correction. Replacements are either new units (while the device is still being manufactured) or remanufactured.

A refurbished device is cleaned up, tested and sent out as a replacement. These are what you get from insurance carriers like Asurion.

Remanufactured devices are devices that are completely put together from scratch with existing parts both new and recycled.
 
I feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me, i have a 5S and was waiting until October to buy AppleCare. Now I can't even buy it and I can't buy AppleCare+ since i'm no longer within the 60 day window.
 
The problem with AppleCare is that they'll keep fixing your iMac's Seagate hard drive every time it fails until it's out of warranty. When you've got a lemon, nothing can save you.

Agreed. If you happen to damage your phone 1 time it will cost at most $229 for an out of warranty replacement or $179 under applecare+

I would rather pay $229 on a as needed basis.
 
They need to announce Applecare+ in the UK. Still no damage protection here...

It has been in the UK for about 6 months on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

This new policy is crap.

You can only buy Applecare plus at time of purchase at a Apple store or Apple.com.

Then you used to have 30 days to purchase by taking your phone or tablet to a Apple store for Applecare plus. If you get your phone or tablet any place other than a Apple store or Apple.com you have to do the above regardless as the only place you can buy Apple care plus is a Apple store or Apple.com.

Now they don't even sell a extended warranty out of those 30 days. If you missed those 30 days your screwed.

Not everyone lives close to a Apple store or have time to go there. So now you are screwed.
