I feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me, i have a 5S and was waiting until October to buy AppleCare. Now I can't even buy it and I can't buy AppleCare+ since i'm no longer within the 60 day window.

Exactly. This will enrage millions of iphone users who thought the same.

This new policy is crap.

You can only buy Applecare plus at time of purchase at a Apple store or Apple.com.

Then you used to have 30 days to purchase by taking your phone or tablet to a Apple store for Applecare plus. If you get your phone or tablet any place other than a Apple store or Apple.com you have to do the above regardless as the only place you can buy Apple care plus is a Apple store or Apple.com.

Now they don't even sell a extended warranty out of those 30 days. If you missed those 30 days your screwed.

Not everyone lives close to a Apple store or have time to go there. So now you are screwed.

Thanks Apple.

I think the potential for abuse is obvious here.

I bought my Applecare+ in the UK over the phone, no need to go into an Apple store. Not sure if the same applies in other countries.

This was purchased after you had received the phone?

All iOS and Macs get AppleCare by default. If you want AppleCare+ you have a year for Macs, and now 60 days for iOS.

Partially right:

All devices get AppleCare ("the hardware failed" support) for one year.* **

  • For iDevices, AppleCare+ must be purchased within 60 days or you lose the option to get a second year of coverage. If not purchased, you are stuck with 1 year. If purchased, it will also cover certain damages and accidents.
  • For Macs and AppleTV, extended AppleCare coverage must be purchased within 1 year. For Macs this makes a total of 3 years coverage, for AppleTV it is 2 years. They do not offer AppleCare+ for Macs or AppleTV, and purchasing AppleCare offers nothing extra over what you get during the first year of coverage.*

*I am purposely excluding the 90 days of telephone and "how do I set up an email" support for the sake of simplicity, but purchasing extra AppleCare or AppleCare+ would give this for the duration of the plan (3 years Macs/Displays, 2 years everything else).
**I am also excluding certain regions (such as the UK) which have consumer protection laws which require a default limited coverage for certain number of years.

Uhh. You can call Apple over the phone and add Applecare+ to it. I did it last week with my 5S.

This is only regards to Applecare+ which covers accidental damage (such as cracked screens, water damage, etc). It is $99 upfront with a $79 deductible (they upped it around last year, it was previously $49).

You can purchase Applecare (NOT applecare+) any time within the 1 yr warranty (the same, go in store or call) but it does NOT cover accidental damage.

They need to announce Applecare+ in the UK. Still no damage protection here...

I have accidental damage on mine. I'm allowed to make 1 accidental damage claim every 12 months I think. I can't remember the T's & C's.

Edit:

https://www.apple.com/uk/support/products/iphone.html

AppleCare+ for iPhone is an insurance product that provides expert telephone technical support1 and up to two years2 of additional hardware coverage, including up to two incidents of accidental damage, each subject to a £55 excess fee.3

AppleCare+ benefits are separate from a consumer’s right to a free-of-charge repair or replacement, by the seller, of goods that do not conform with the contract of sale. Under English law, consumers have up to six years from the date of delivery to exercise their rights; however, various factors may impact your eligibility to receive these remedies. I guess you haven't been paying attention.

https://www.macrumors.com/2014/07/01/applecare-60-days/

"Apple also is discontinuing the previous AppleCare option that extends warranty service for the iPad and iPhone, but does not provide accidental damage coverage."

In florida you cannot add insurance of anykind to a Apple device over the phone as I have stated.

The old Applecare not Applecare plus is gone. bye bye. You cannot get it over the phone in the store or anywhere as of today. So you getting Applecare last week is a moot point. Regular Applecare is gone for everybody who wants to add it.

If you are past the 30 day window that was active when you bought your idevice, iphone or ipad you're screwed.

If you purchased it withing the new Applecare plus window you're good to go.

Pay attention my friend. ;)

Want to sell more Apple Care? Make it five years instead of three years or allow renewal at the end of the three years for another two years. While they're at it Apple needs to build products that will last that time too. They already do a very good job but can still improve. Then once they conquer that shift up to ten years... That would be green.

There would be little incentive for people to upgrade if they did that. You have to see it from their side too, they are a business and want people upgrading after 1-3 years max.

You still don't have to apply for AppleCare. It's there by default for 1yr. That's what I'm getting at

Of course. I mainly wanted to clarify that there is no AppleCare+ for Macs, but I must have gotten a bit distracted. Sorry about that.

In most Eurpoean countries this "premium service" is common sense and forced by law. The American capitalism could learn from these "socialists".

Per the article. It states you can purchase AppleCare+ online. This is only true when you purchase AppleCare+ at the same time you purchase iPhone or iPad online. Therefore the 30 or 60 day rule does not apply. If you want to purchase AppleCare+ during the 60 or 30 day window you have to do so either in store or over the phone with AppleCare.

I'm sure you have no complaints about the high price Apple charges for iPhones in Europe.

Despite the absurdly high taxes (compared to here), they do still earn percentage than the US. We need better consumers rights in the US.

Doesn't this only apply if you buy the extended warranty as well with your AmEx and then your device incurs a repair cost within a year of the extended warranty expiring?

No it extends the manufacturer's warranty. I was able to receive $200 back earlier this year for my iPhone 5 repair/replacement that was literally 1 day past 1 year warranty with no Applecare. I'd assume that they would cover your $50 replacement too if you have Applecare but that would only mean you're paying extra for the Applecare to have AMEX pay you back less money for the repair.

You need to submit your receipt for the repair to AMEX and they send you a check. Since I used up the entire amount of my purchase (I think I had $30 or so still) I would not be able to receive another full reimbursement though so I guess if you buy Applecare and you break your phone more than once a year during your second year you're covered.

Correction. Replacements are either new units (while the device is still being manufactured) or remanufactured.

A refurbished device is cleaned up, tested and sent out as a replacement. These are what you get from insurance carriers like Asurion.

Remanufactured devices are devices that are completely put together from scratch with existing parts both new and recycled.
By whichever words you choose to use, the units Applecare gives out are parts number identified as re-manufactured, or refurbished, or whatever. And as such, that unit does not have the full tradability that a new unit does. At least insofar as Best Buy's trade in program is concerned. They -know- what you have in your hand and some history based on parts number. That may be a 1% of the time situation, but I still think Applecare should make whatever units they distribute undiscernible from newly bought units. You never know when it may be an issue, as I found out.

Do you really believe that those "rights" are free? Electronics prices in Europe aren't purely a function of taxes, they're also a function of those laws you're so fond of. Having "rights" for goods you can't afford because they're now too expensive isn't an improvement in my opinion.
