It's good to hear the Chinese are buying their own domestic brand smartphones as it shows some sort of national loyalty unlike all the disloyal Americans buying So. Korean Samsung smartphones. I hear that the Japanese are mainly buying iPhones now as it's unlikely they want to support any products from So. Korea. I remember when Japanese consumers were really into their Japanese-branded keitai feature-phones. Consumers should have a choice of what they want to buy but I suppose poorer consumers are limited to how much money they can spend. It's unlikely many Indian consumers will be buying iPhones no matter what sort of innovation the next iPhone has. If a consumer can't afford a high-end smartphone then they should go with something cheaper and that means cheap Android stuff. I know Google wants to bring down the cost of Android smartphones in India to around $30 to $50. Jeez, that's really cheap. Like use once and throw it away cheap.

The only non iPhone I've ever considered was a Xiomi edge to edge. Too bad they don't have it in Canada or it'd probably destroy the competition.

As far as I know People in China rather buy Chinese products. Apple will loose this market.
Who are the owners of these Chinese companies ?
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
This story only belongs on Apple Investor News.....its of NO consequence to people who are looking for answers about Apple products...NONE

The iPhone is not for everyone, it's for those who want the best phone.
Actually, it's for those who can AFFORD the best smartphone. If you've got near-empty pockets then it's Android all the way. Anyone with a 'hunnert' bucks in their pockets can take home a run-of-the-mill Android clunker to browse and text with. There's nothing wrong with that. If you can't afford a Porsche, some lame Toyota can also get you around town, but just not in style.

This graphic doesn't tell the whole picture. Apple's smartphone have 1000% more profitability than any other phone. The reason why they are not selling as well in markets like China it's because of the price. You can buy a cheap Android phone for $100, and they often let you pay them in monthly statement with your phone bill, or you get it free with a contract. Apple's phones are very expensive and they often need to pay at full price. So while another company may sell 100 phones more for each Apple phone, they are much more profitable.

Why do I get the feeling the iPhone 8 won't live up to expectations?
I have the same feeling too. It is going to perhaps be one major disappointment. Not to worry, sales will still skyrocket!

I'm sure you've thoroughly researched the Chinese market, the price of phones, the mix of models, and how much each company is making, before weighing in.

Those china phone are so cheap, I could have buy a few of that for the price of 1 iPhone, obviously Apple can't beat those raw numbers. But per device revenue, iPhone is still one of the top.

Could get those china phone as burner-phone and throw away if damaged.

China has a growing middle class, but it's still relatively small compared to what is found in the western world. So it's not surprising that less expensive phones have more traction. Also Chinese companies are heavily subsidized by the state which is a steep disadvantage to foreign companies entering the market. Apple isn't dealing with an open marketplace and free economy here.

The iPhone 7 in the US was hardly a barn burner so why would anyone expect it to be elsewhere where the iPhone is less popular? The iPhone 8 might very well complete this story.

Depends on what you are expecting. From what I'm seeing in the rumors it looks to be a very solid update, something I'm excited about and I haven't been excited about an iPhone since the iPhone 4. A 5.8" OLED screen in a 4.7/5" form factor, some kind of wireless charging is a good start, more battery. Add in an optical zoom (single lens if dual isn't possible) would be good too.

But if that doesn't happen then maybe TC gets pushed out. So win-win either way

It seems everybody has missed a very important point, subtle but incredibly important. For those who have never worked or lived in Asia this will sound strange but the number '7' is bad (bad unlucky in the asian psyche) whereas the number 8 is good (incredibly lucky). So If Apple focus on the number '8', I predict a large growth in Asian sales and riot in the shops.
Very interesting, thanks. Of course I checked this and it's true. Apple probably should done some cultural research and named the iPhone 7 something different for the Chinese market. I don't know if the iPhone 8 (if so-named) will explode because of the power of the number 8, but it couldn't hurt.

I also think that in the Chinese market, which is not exactly open, it's no coincidence that the top three manufacturers in terms of both growth and volume, are Chinese. These data are not a particularly valid referendum on the quality or even necessarily the popularity of the products.

It seems to me that, since the China market is so huge, Apple doesn't have to claim a huge piece of it to be successful and make sizable profits.

You'd think that would be the goal, right? Making a profit is supposed to be the reason a business exists! But no, we're supposed to think that marketshare is the real goal.

It's nothing I'm going to argue over either.
Too late.

Too late? I'm not arguing as there is nothing to argue and I'm not going to respond further either if you actually believe I am arguing.

You're right. There is nothing to argue: Google's business is about selling your information, and Apple's is about selling hardware and software.

Don't bother responding, it's not going to get to me. I have already seen enough of your posts in this thread to see what your mindset is. It's clear you have nothing but contempt for anything but Apple, and if you want to live in your little bubble, by all means. They collect data and use it to monetize JUST LIKE GOOGLE, that's FACT. Again, this is something that is NOT arguable.

Just in case you missed it :

Collection and Use of Non-Personal Information
We also collect data in a form that does not, on its own, permit direct association with any specific individual. We may collect, use, transfer, and disclose non-personal information for any purpose. It's for those who want one, nothing more. There are plenty of poor people with iPhones.

The iPhone/iOS is rubbish in China.

Apple doesn't seem to have people smart enough to inquire about and fix bugs every single Chinese iPhone user has to face on daily basis.

Apple Mail uses up 30% battery if one happens to dare have a gmail account. Apart from that one gets asked for the gmail password every single day.

QQ mail (one of the biggest email providers in China) is not supported properly. Mails older than a month simply vanish from the inbox. IMAP folders, Spam folder don't show up. What a mess.

The iOS weather app doesn't recognise cities like Manchester or basically any UK or German, French etc. cities apart from the capitals.

Apple maps doesn't find reliably locations written in Chinese or pinyin.

WeChat doesn't work properly with the Apple Watch. Messages don't get sent out in 50% of the cases. No feedback that something went wrong. The message just vanishes.

App Store often not accessible without a VPN.

I could go on for hours.

Some of these problems have been around for years.

Apple doesn't care.

I've been to a few Apple Stores in China and sometimes tried to ask if there were a way for the store employees to let Apple know about problems, Chinese iPhone users have to deal with.
Unfortunately the guys from the Genius Bar have no way of telling anyone in Cupertino about all this. There doesn't seem to be any connection between Chinese Genius Bar employees and engineers in Cali.

Ridiculous.
