?

I sort of understand the maps thing (haven't used them enough yet to have an opinion though)...but the dial buttons? You won't upgrade because they're grey instead of blue? really? Wow...that's, um...something.
I didn't say I wouldn't ever upgrade, just not now. And yes colors make a huge difference to me. Would you drive a pink car?

I really hope google puts a new map app on the store. I don't own a car, so I used my google maps to get bus times which were always very accurate. Now I'm testing the new apple map app and it doesn't even have bus times. It just routes me to the app store so I can buy another app.
It was really nice to get all that info in the app. This is by far the worst software upgrade in ios6

Agree with OP

Years ago (7 or 8), I worked at Microsoft and worked on WinCE. I had all the different pda's such as iPaqs etc. and I used a WinCE phone. While apps where available, the devices where slow but compared to Palm, they kicked butt. After I left MS, I was at a new job in a new city and a co-worker had an iPod touch. He showed me Apples App store and how easy it was to get new apps directly on the device. It was very impressive. Apple had the whole mobile experience down pat. I was shopping for a new phone anyways so I thought I'd give Apple a shot.

I bought the iPhone 3gs. It was really cool. There were tons of apps and it was a great experience. I became hooked on reading eBooks on it so when the iPhone 4 came out, I had to get the retina display. Dispite my phone being affected by the "death grip", I put it in a case and its still my phone to this day. Since then, I've bought 2 4th gen iPods touches for my kids, and all three iPads. I mention all this because it seems on Mac Rumors, you have to prove your loyalty to Apple by listing your devices. Otherwise, your opinion doesn't count.

My iPhone 4 doesn't hold a charge very well and I'm eligible for an upgrade. I've been waiting to see all the latest phones from Android, MS, and Apple. After playing with iOS6 on my phone and checking out the iPhone 5, I'm not wowed. It looks like a taller iPhone 4s to me. When I watched the keynote, I thought great, one more row of icons. Big deal. In contrast, watching the Nokia 920 event with wireless charging, super sensitive screen, excellent camera, etc. and the look of the new MS UI made me excited. It looks fun and different.

It used to be that Apple was the only one that had apps. If you wanted cool apps, you had to buy Apple. Droid has now caught up and while MS isn't quite there, they still have lots of stuff and as a developer, their API is easy to use. I see no compelling reason to stay with Apple and many reasons to leave.

My current plan is to keeps the iPods for the kids, replace my phone with the Nokia 920 in Oct. and replace my iPad 3 with a surface Pro tablet around Christmas. It just seems that when I look at Apple devices, there just isn't any real features that no other device can do - yet there are many limitations.

I have been playing around with iOS 6 and I am hugely disappointed.

Apple Maps - it's so bad, it's so bad.

Contacts - too cluttered. You have fields for Facebook profiles, Facebook chat, Facebook e-mail address, Facebook profile link, regular e-mail address.. There is also buttons for added accounts. "Name in iCloud" "Name in Facebook". Just if you forgot where where you added the contact?!

Colored status bar - sometimes black, sometimes colored. Ugh??!

Dial buttons - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

= how did they end up here when they tossed ideas around? Did they scrapped the idea of a wifi-bluetooth toogle for a colored status bar? It is obvious that they focused too hard on Facebook intergration. Was the new map solution included in the last second? Just not ready for prime time.

Siri vs Google voice search = Google dominates.

Apple Maps vs Google Maps = Apple isn't even in the game.

Hardware design = Users love curved backs on mobiles. The iphone 4, 4S just feelt odd. I stuck with iPhone because of the software. I thought I would never say this but I will sell my iPhone 4S and get a Galaxy Nexus. I will miss the camera but Google is just better in search and mapping.

After using two iPhones over the past 4 years, I upgraded to a Galaxy S3 this week. One of the smartest decisions I've ever made. I still think Apple makes the best tablet and I love my two iPads, but I think I'm done with their phones.

I'm starting to feel that way. I love macs and I loved my iPhone 3G (before iOS4) and my iPhone 4, but I don't like where Apple is going (and not going) with iOS. Time for a change.

there just isn't any real features that no other device can do

Open up the browser on Lumia 920/Galaxy S III, go to youtube.com, find some lecture or a song, start playing video, get out of the browser, keep video(audio of the video) playing in the background.

I've just watch this and I do like the look of it.

I'm just worried about the long delay between application switches that have been mentioned.

I'm confused by that? Are you saying iOS can do this? I'm pretty sure iOS 6 doesn't allow this.

I'm saying you CAN do that in iOS(since iOS 4), you cannot with Android or WP. And personally for me this is a big feature. I love turn some video on from YouTube, background it and do something else, like browse in Chrome, write an email, view places on the Map or even jot down notes from the video.

The way you do it this: once you "Home" out of the browser, video and sound will stop, double tap the "Home" button, swipe to the left, tap on the "Play" icon, audio starts playing.

And here's some more, on iOS with a third party app(OPlayer) you can play DivX/XviD/MKV files over the network straight from your server or computer. Can't do that on Android or WP.

Wow, you learn something new every day. Cheers for this, it'll come in handy on the train when I want to lock my device but not stop the video from playing. :)

Interesting. I didn't know you could do that. I guess that could useful but I was thinking more alone the lines of being able to plug a USB drive into a device to retrieve a set of power point slides off it at a conference or something.

I don't think the OP was as loyal as he thought. I don't blame him though.

People say that there is always someone people that hate but let's compare. Gingerbread to ICS was amazing, JB which was just a minor update was great too. All the reviews were good.

iOS on the other hand just isn't that good.
-maps got worse
-minutes after updating wifi stop working for everyone until apple restored a server
-springboard crashes when moving apps multiple screens
-it's cluttered and FB wasnt integrated well
-new colors of status bar and dialer are bad
-passbook is all but useless currently and personally it looks like too much work to be worth using

Things I like

-auto dimming, bright to dim
-download app updates without apple ID
-limit ad tracking in settings
-Siri works better and does more
-panorama is pretty good

I don't see anyone raving about how great this update is. More people making excuses or getting defensive and telling people to goto Android.

I was just expecting more.

Don't forget that Apple is probably going to fix a lot of the bugs (and already said that they will continue to improve Maps with the feedback they've received) as they move forward.

That feature is awesome!

Right now it is possible to transfer and store files through Wi-Fi. USB storage would be very useful, I agree, but between USB transfer and background audio, I'd rather have background audio.

And Apple gained many more.

iOS6 & iTunes Match - Highly Disappointing

Highly disappointing coming from Apple. There should have been more warning. This is the type of action that I would expect from an immature start-up. They could have had the common decency to at least leave previously loaded songs, audiobooks, etc. on the device rather than wiping my iPhone of all media like a commercial deforestation crew. Now I have to reconstruct everything from scratch and to add insult to injury (literally) all my downloads from iTunes Match hang and what few that are completed do not show available on my device. This is a total, meltdown, catastrophic disregard to customer service and end user rights. It is a good thing that J. D. Power & Associates recently polled for user satisfaction and Apple came out on top for the X number of years in a row before the release of iOS 6. I doubt they would have had the poll been taken today.

I'm a very disloyal customer

I'm a very disloyal customer and proud of it. I always look for the best product to meet my needs regardless of the brand.

This is quite as good as it gets. Fully discharge and recharge the iPhone at least once a month. Only charge the iPhone when it's below 10% and make sure you charge it fullt to a 100%. Also, don't overcharge it.

I normally leave it charging overnight.

Our company have only been using iPhones for three months (100% Blackberry prior) so I'm not used to a 'bad' battery.

I may be wrong, but I believe Safari has had background audio access since it was introduced in iOS 4. It definitely works, you can play something and have it keep playing in the background. I've done it many times.

How??

So what do you think is so 'old' about the Retina display and new gen intel core processors? Please point to another manufacturer doing something so different?

You do understand, right? that Google's license with Apple to license Youtube expired, you can go and download an app to do this, right now... what's your problem?? Not everyone uses Youtube and the old app was pants. Let google develop it...

Name another manufacturer doing something drastically different? Galaxy S2 -> S3, bigger screen, faster cpu and better camera... right??? JESUS!

Think you'll find, pal, iPhone 5's have outstripped the 4S on pre-orders.

So google announce Project Butter that amazingly changes their OS from the crapfest of lagginess it was (on most hardware) to a smooth experience... wooooow!

HAHAHA go buy a Samsung then, take back the iPad's they are within the 14 day re-stock window...... You do know that other manufacturers don't have SD Card slots... right? the average consumer probably still has the original SD Card in their phones that came with them...

The Retina display in the iPhones ??? Come on - Apple doenst have the best resolution anymore. Thats more than 1 1/2 year ago.

Your problem is - for you Apple is religion. You dont look at it at all with critical eyes.

I didn't say I wouldn't ever upgrade, just not now. And yes colors make a huge difference to me. Would you drive a pink car?

Who is going to judge you based on the colour of your smartphone dialpad, much less even notice?

Heck, I am even slowly trying to integrate siri into my normal everyday usage. So that means seeing the dialpad even less. :)
