That's quite good news. Always had bad luck with macs and reliability.
They all needed repairs because some components (usually the dGPU) just broke.

Meanwhile in Australia, we pay some of the highest prices in the world for Macs, apple care + is still $299 🤦‍♂️😡

A device that is guaranteed to have component failure should be covered just in case. Now that everything is glued or soldered onto the motherboard its the only way to not end up with an expensive paperweight. I'll take care of my stuff and probably will never use it, but I would hate to drop the thing and crack it and pay apples ridiculous prices to fix it.

You can ask for a pro-rated refund on the remaining time on the 3 years in the US. Not sure about other regions. From the US AppleCare agreement:https://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/docs/AppleCare_ara_NA_en_v3.0.pdf
Oh man, that's awesome, thanks! I will try this (I'm in the US).

edit, later: yes, this totally worked. I just dug up the email with the agreement number and called in. I was ready to just write this off and hadn't thought to check the agreement for cancellation terms. This post saved me about $150, which will buy me most of the AppleCare+ on the MacBook I'm trading up to.

Customers who recently purchased AppleCare+ for one of the affected MacBook models can contact Apple Support for assistance with cancelling their current AppleCare+ plan and purchasing a new one at the lower price, according to information obtained by MacRumors, but Apple did not provide a cutoff date for eligibility.
There might not be a cutoff, or at least not until closer to the expiration date. Little known fact, you can actually return AppleCare at anytime for a prorated refund as long as you have not used any of the accidental incidents. I’m not sure if that still applies if you’ve used the non-accidental warranty service, but I don’t think it does. I’ve done it twice about a year in when I went to sell my phone to upgrade. I’m wondering if they’re just using that existing policy for those people. I’m also not sure how it works for those that are doing the monthly option for payment. They probably just cancel that subscription and continue with the new one.

In australia we have the ACL(Austrlian Consumer Law). If the manufacturer is at fault, they have to replace, repair the device for free for a reasonable period of time.
I’d rather cheaper pricing, how often does your phone or Mac stuff up, not that often really.

Never buy apple care + for iPad & macs, only Apple TV 4K. 😂
Why you bought Apple Care + for Apple TV that always sits on your table and will probably last almost a decade.
I am using 2021 Apple TV 4K, but my Apple TV 3rd generation still work flawlessly since 2013.

Apple care is for 3 years cover. Whilst Apples warranty is only 1 year, here in Australia they are forced to cover it for 2 years under Australian Consumer Law.
So generally here AppleCare isn’t worth it for only 1 years additional cover imo.

this is also across the board, not just computers and not only for 2 years.
Audi had to replace a $5000 part in my automatic transmission for free as it failed at only 80k kilometres after 6 years, which is not deemed “reasonable” given the cost and perceived “quality” of an Audi.

yeah Apple ain't doing this out the goodness of their heart. if they could get away with keeping the higher price they would.

I generally don’t buy Applecare, just like how I don’t buy extended warranty. My rationale is that insurance is meant for catastrophic situations where I wouldn’t be able to pay the downside, like life or medical fees.

For Apple products, if something does happen to them, I am capable of paying the repair / replacement cost out of pocket. Assuming I don’t simply replace it with something better / newer, or shop somewhere else.

In the long run, it’s cheaper for me to just self-insure in this regard.

Being sarcastic, only product I buy apple care + for is iPhone.

Apple Care+ for M1 MacBook Air is only $159 after 20% student discount. It is worth it

Makes sense, lower the price of damages for a faster machine...

Just encourges more poeople to get an M1. That's all it is.

Applecare (+) scam......I know... as a EU citizen I get flamed over this.
Lol good luck with that mentality when your basement floods or when you wreck your car
How so? Just ‘cause it’s a scam doesn’t mean I don’t use it LOL! They figured out a way to get people to pay for receiving nothing, I applaud ‘em for that!

AppleCare as insurance is no different from any other type of insurance.

Sounds like I’m in the minority, but for notebooks, I’m a big fan of Apple Care. For my latest MBP alone, they’ve replaced the battery, screen, logic board, and keyboard twice. The keyboard was covered anyway, but I can’t imagine how expensive the other stuff would’ve been — they basically gave me a new computer twice and retained the SSD with my files for a couple hundred bucks.

On hold right now...better $20 in my pocket than in Apple’s coffers.

EDIT: Nope. As folks have said, you have 60 days from the purchase of AC to call up and ask for the lower rate, then you have to cancel the existing AC and buy at the lower price. So much more complicated than it needs to be.

I generally do not buy Apple Care except for actual highr priced devices -- like laptops. So, this is welcomed news. All else being equal, cheaper insurance is always better.

Doesn't look like it. I just added a base model M1 MBP and only AC+ came up as an option, $279 Canadian dollars, which is $26 more if you convert $199 USD to CAD.

Apple never uses the current exchange when pricing stuff. We always get the shaft, nor do they ever periodically update the prices as exchange rate fluctuates.
It’s the import tax.
