Do I have to call them to get this if I just bought a Mac? When I try to add AppleCare to my existing purchased Mac, I get the old prices.

Yup! Hardware defects for one year. Doesn’t cover accidental damage though, you’d need AppleCare+ for that.
You used to be able to purchase AppleCare (regular) for the extra 2 years. I'm trying to understand how the new AppleCare+ scheme differs? Is it only accidental damage that you pay a per-incident fee? Previously, accidental damage was not covered at all, but hardware failures were. Are all hardware failures covered for no extra charge with the new scheme?

Sounds like I’m in the minority, but for notebooks, I’m a big fan of Apple Care. For my latest MBP alone, they’ve replaced the battery, screen, logic board, and keyboard twice. The keyboard was covered anyway, but I can’t imagine how expensive the other stuff would’ve been — they basically gave me a new computer twice and retained the SSD with my files for a couple hundred bucks.
That doesn’t speak well on the quality of Apple repairs.

It’s the import tax.
What import tax would that be? As a US company, I thought Apple would be exempt through the Free Trade Agreement, and FST was replaced by GST years ago, so all taxes should be at the point of purchase.

Apple just keeps a very high margin on their USD to CAD currency exchange rates to cover worst case fluctuations and only seems to slightly adjust them with new model introductions. The iPhone SE seems the most egregious example at $599 CAD versus $399 USD, which at today’s exchange rate should be $493.50 CAD. Sales tax in Manitoba is 5% federal GST and 7% provincial for a total of $71.88, so Apple’s budget phone would cost you $670.88 CAD all in here, or $542.34 USD. Apple doesn’t even sell refurb phones in Canada, probably due to our phone monopolies that make the US phone providers look good.

And as far as it being due to included warranty, our warranty is no better than that in the USA, I believe, with 1 year parts and labour (we do get a bonus “u” in our labor, though.)

yeah Apple ain't doing this out the goodness of their heart. if they could get away with keeping the higher price they would.

Or maybe the return/repair rate with these machines are low enough that Apple decided that it would be more profitable to lower the price and sell more people Apple Care.

Yes, it also covers hardware defects (like the battery failing or ports not working anymore, etc etc). Those would be covered for free under AppleCare+, as long as there wasn’t accidental damage. If there were, you’d be subject to the small fee to get it fixed (in comparison to the hundreds if not thousands of dollars to get it fixed/replaced).

As a whole, insurance as a scam, even in the EU.

How so? Just ‘cause it’s a scam doesn’t mean I don’t use it LOL! They figured out a way to get people to pay for receiving nothing, I applaud ‘em for that!

AppleCare as insurance is no different from any other type of insurance.
You missed my point, Applecare should be mandatory as warranty.

I kind of got reamed on this, myself. I bought a 2020 Air last year when it came out and now I want to upgrade to an M1 Air. They're offering about $600 trade-in, which is ok -- but I'd paid for AppleCare and there's no provision for moving that from Mac to Mac, unfortunately. I really wish there was, even if I lost the "used" portion of it that went toward covering my current MacBook.
Actually, you can call Apple, ask for Agreement Administration, and they will refund you the difference then you can apply that toward the purchase of of Apple Care on the new product. The provision has been in place for the 7 years I have been here.

You can call Apple Care today ask for Agreement Administration and get the difference from what you have already purchased.
Call Apple Care. You will need your Mac serial #, your checking routing, and your account number.
If they say anything about the price being a student offer tell them no… it says right on the Apple site that if you were to purchase your Mac today the new cost would be $199
The next step is they will prorate your Apple Care send you your difference back and once you have your money in your account you can repurchase the AppleCare at the lower price.

Makes sense since M1 devices are basically unrepairable all applecare is going to for you is try to sell you a reconditioned device.

Never have, never will. Except for the normal wear and tear, Apple devices I have are just as good as when I bought them.
I never picked up AppleCare before in the past, but I've always purchased it ever since Apple made it impossible for you to change your own batteries.

There's an M1 MBP with my name on it coming to me today. I got AppleCare with it as usual. If the M1 runs as cool as advertised, I might be able to go back to skipping on the AppleCare, but I'm gonna play it safe with my first M1.

The battery replacement aspect has made AppleCare worth it for me. The things I do always end up turning my MBP into a death trap for batteries. If I want to fry an egg, I could just use the bottom lid of my computer. It's rare that I can get past two years on one battery.

Really hoping that Apple Silicon makes this a thing of the past.

On the phone now to get my $49 back (Education was $249 and is now $199)

  1. EDIT: apple is also giving me free AirPods since I qualify for the promotion announced today.
  2. EDIT2: 15 minutes talking to 2 different people I was transferred to a 3rd person who has no idea who I am so now I have to repeat myself again. I thought Apple was better at this.
  3. EDIT3: 28 minutes now, I'm now being told I can't get a return difference.
  4. EDIT4: AirPods for free are now added but they can't do AppleCare at the store level..38 minutes in so far and transferring to the 5th person.
  5. EDIT5: 43 minutes in. I'm now talking to the 6th person. "Can I get your first and last name?"
  6. EDIT6: 51 Minutes in. "Sorry we see this as $249 on our side so we can't give you a lower price" I provided them the new AppleCare+ for MacBook Pro SKU which is S9733LL/A/ which is $199 https://www.apple.com/us-hed/shop/product/S9733LL/A/applecare-for-13-inch-macbook-pro-m1
  7. EDIT7: I'm being transferred again. "I've never seen $199 before. can we screen share?" FFS
  8. EDIT8: 1 hour and 10 minutes in, "we'll refund the $49 difference and you'll receive an email receipt"
Well..that was more than painful.

Honestly THIS is what should be emailed to all top executive staff at Apple along with Diedre (?) who’s in charge of customer experience at Apple.

Apple wants you to come to the store to resolve things more efficiently, I have found. They can fix things, deal with issues, or whatever much more streamlined in the store. The phone experience has been a nightmare if you need something resolved.

I was actually able to get the difference refunded to me. But I had to go to the store. The call center would not help at all, they kept wanting to refund but then make me pay again the full $249 while I waited on the $269 refund. The store was able to close-box exchange refund and I ended up with extra days on my AppleCare and just getting the $20 refund back to my card.

The insanity level pricing of the ipad keyboards would definitely support the argument that apple's method for deciding pricing is "What's the absolute most that the 'top' 10% of customers would be willing to pay?"
