A field day, the haters shall have today.

The revenue decline was driven by China, while developed countries are actually expected to post higher revenue.

Meanwhile, many products remain supply constrained. Meaning that demand outstrips supply.

This shows that pricing isn’t really a key factor. By and large, consumers are still willing to buy Apple products at Apple prices.

Do people even read articles before commenting anymore?

People read the article but they don't believe Tim's BS. Based on the after-hours action neither does the market.

I think he’s more referring to the lack of USB 3.0 ports. It’s also ridiculous that you can’t plug your iPhone into your laptop out of the box. You need an adapter.
Except you don’t really need to plug an iPhone into a laptop anymore. Apple does sell a USB-C to Lightning cable, but I think the next leap may just be to USB-C, since it seems to have become the standard connector for premium Android phones.

What will you do if your SE breaks and you can’t find another one? What will you do if there’s nothing smaller 5 years from now and the SE is too slow?

Quit Apple.

Maybe quit smartphones all together and return to a cell phone.

This is pure madness. I see people everywhere holding phones, no matter if they are cooking, trying to catch the subway, being in an opera audience or being on a romantic date. And they all carry devices, that get larger and larger, so they can consume more portions of digital junk instead of living their lives.

Nothing bigger than an SE. Period. Why? Because I don’t give room for anything bigger in my life. If Apple fails to acknowledge that, it will become the least cool company in the world. That is the last thing Steve wanted.

Doesn't help that the U.S. and China are helping things along with their trade war. In fact, Apple outright blamed this much while not blaming iPhone pricing for weaker than expected iPhone sales.
Yes, though that’s mostly a threat right now since most of the tariffs are not yet in place. China is apparently making concessions, so we might have a breakthrough there. The market will believe it when it sees it, but China needs a deal to boost its own economy.

The beginning of the end.

Not even close. Apple has enough money in reserve to sustain years of losses and/or decline... Plus there are a lot solutions to revive sales they're just not at that point yet... but if it comes down to it I am sure they have a ton of things they can do that will get the revenue machine humming again. Something as simple as making a phone with the kitchen sink in it and lowering the price $200 bucks or so, that will throw the market in to a tizzy... and couple that with a ton of new features in iOS Ka-ching!

They certainly have the ability to do this, their business practice has been to drip out slow updates and maximize profit margins, but I'm sure that can change on a dime if need be.

Funny how all the armchair Wall Street experts who post on Macrumors dismissed all the warnings from a month ago.

Yes, I am one of them. This is the first time (in many years) Apple is going to miss it's own guidance - so it is indeed a black eye. But there have been so many false and fake reports of Apple slowdowns in sales. This one is real. But it's not that big of a deal either. Last quarter was another record revenue quarter, so this Christmas quarter won't be a record, but it's still big at $84B. The stock is way way down, and I hope it doesn't take long for the company to be appreciated and the stock price to return to all time highs.

Wonder what the real reason(s) is/are.
Email (see below) and actual article headline upon opening.

My local Apple store currently has signs advertising the iPhone XR positioned on stands next to the door so people can see as they walk by.

Never seen that before, I think the Xr has sold way short of what they were expecting.

  • Cook’s letter said fewer carrier subsidies, price increases based on the strength of the U.S. dollar and cheaper battery replacements caused the weak iPhone upgrades for the quarter.
I can't wait for the next recession so I can get a discount on my next iPhone.

Yes I do need to plug my iPhone into my laptop. I plug my phone into my laptop all the time ... with an adapter I had to needlessly purchase. You can’t do a non-cloud backup or Restore your phone without a computer. Even things as basic as getting a new ringtone requires iTunes. There will always be a need to plug it in. USB-C is indeed the standard now and the latest iPad Pro is USB-C, but it could still be a couple years before they transition the iPhone.

I'm on Pixel 2 and had original Pixel. Have never had to plug the phone into my computer once. I don't even know if Google makes a Mac app. I don't miss the days of finding my cable and have to launch iTunes to do something.

If they are confident they will substantially increase revenues through services they should consider dropping prices by a hefty amount. I am actually hoping the stock tanks all day tomorrow. I am not above bottom fishing and sifting through the garbage.

I probably will never buy AAPL again as a feel good company. More likely buying the dips to sell the rally

My point is that it is no longer required. When the iPhone came out, using iTunes was the only way to activate it, back it up, etc. Today iCloud backups are now preferred (and iTunes backups don’t back up the apps anymore). What I don’t understand is why Apple doesn’t ship the iPhone standard with the 18W USB-C charger and cable. It’s laughable to ship with a 5W USB-A charger that takes hours to fully charge the phone.

Remember when Steve returned, and he consolidated the products down to a quadrant so it could be easily understood? We're right back to John Sculley's days, where it's not that obvious what the differences in the various products are, leading to consumer confusion. Haven't we seen this movie before?

Is there a place that shows what the product lineup looked like just before Steve left vs now?

The stock is now at $145 vs $230 the day before the last earnings release. You can bet Apple executives are worried.

The world is experiencing an economic slowdown. The US stock market had the worst December in many years. The China situation is largely due to trump's idiotic trade wars. Apple is in a great position to ride this out. It's a minor bump for this large a company. They certainly are not showing the type of insane panic you'll see on Mac Rumors.

You don’t need iTunes to set up an iPhone anymore. It isn’t even the preferred method.
