Apple should improve their remote app and forget about a wiimote. They should just include the accelerometer into the Remote app. That would be good enough for a lot if people.

Uh, huh huh, hey Beavis, they're talking about their magic wands. Uh, huh, huh, huh.

I was skeptical at first, but it looks like this thing may be real.

Apple TV II anyone?

Maybe the real news that rumor site should pick up on is the potential for Apple to merge with Disney. All the "magic" stuff sounds too Disney-like (i.e. Magic Kingdom). :p

This would be cool, but I would think they would focus more on the remote app on the iPhone and iPod Touch and how iSlate will integrate with the Apple TV. To me THAT is where the future is. Also, the Apple TV is DESPERATELY CRYING for an SDK and the App Store. WOW, just Apple doing that would really change the game!!! Lastly, and slightly smaller scale; I want to be able to view all my movies by their cover like when you are in the iTunes Store on the Apple TV. Much easier to decide what you want to watch when you can see them all in front of you at once!

Looks like a Wii?

Would work so long as I didn't have to fiddle with a tacky, embarrassing "sensor" bar. That bar was always an issue with my Wii, sometimes falling off of it's little pedestal when one of the kids jumped.

not a fan of apply for patents with vaporware. This is what is breeding the patent wars between companies. real products should be a mandate for patents, but that is my two cents

bit off topic but some of these posts have led me to think.....

Has anyone thought the reason to encourage us all to buy a tablet could be that it is actually a £1000 fingerworks/ wacom cintiq tablet type thing that you use with your current mac to add touchable gestures stuff AND then use it to take away as a mini tablet mac?/ oversized souped up iPhone?

Oh, no. You have it wrong. Apple NEVER rips off... they only "borrow". You see, ANY other company rips Apple off. That's the way it works within the walls of COA (Cult Of Apple). :D

Wow, these kinds of comments are getting tiresome.

I keep seeing this snarky comment without anyone citing an example of what they're talking about. So let's have it. What's something Apple stole and then claimed it was their own invention? And please back up your answer with actual citations. I want to see Apple's press release where they lay claim to having created something they took from someone else or a quote from Steve Jobs taking credit.

And before you cite the GUI being taken from Xerox, please remember that it's a matter of record that Apple didn't steal anything from Xerox. They obtained permission, compensated Xerox, hired away some of the people working on the GUI, and added a ton of new things to the concept that Xerox's version didn't have. And they've never claimed to have invented it.

What else have you got?

I wouldn't be surprised if the new apple tv has a version of the iphone OS running on an ARM processor and will be able to make use of programs already written for the iphone/IPT

It's also a matter of record that Xerox sued Apple, saying that Apple ''intentionally and purposefully concealed'' the derivation of the Lisa and Macintosh software from Xerox software... and therefore were unjustly receiving licensing benefits that belonged to Xerox.

Mouse, Visual Voicemail, Multitouch.

Just because Apple buys smaller companies and slaps an Apple logo on it doesn't mean Apple invented it.

As long as you're referencing public record, why don't you mention that the case was dismissed. Xerox did not re-file. Hardly the actions of a litigious corporation with a building full of lawyers who think they still had a case.

We'll have to see what comes out in the wash, but a couple thoughts:

1. I had an inair mouse 5 years ago from Gyration. Works fine for presentations, gets a bit awkward if you specifically have to point at something, but the AppleTV interface might work. That being said, it means another remote on your table. As is, remotes can learn the IR, and away you go... not so much with an accelerometer.

2. Complete rumor I saw some anonymous comment on a site somewhere today, though I'm struggling to find it again, but supposedly a cheap $100 unit will be on the way, limited to 1GB of memory, and 720p this January. I have trouble believing that price point, but points to a thornier issue... The hardware in the current unit is less than ideal, and the above doesn't seem to address that concern. Those that manage to hack the box to run XMBC, or Boxee definitely see limitations in the ideal that iTunes must run at all instances to stream content, and those using Mplayer to play video quickly realize the hardware is restrictive. Processing needs to go thru the Celeron CPU, because Apple sandbox their graphics chips, preventing H.264 decoding from going thru the GPU if you aren't using Quicktime.

I'd seriously just like a decent upgrade to the CPU and GPU, maybe a bit more RAM, then just run Boxee.

I didn't get from lightpeak comment that Apple is saying this. A cult is a group of followers, so my take on lightpeak's comment is that it referring to the Apple fan base.

Finally!

This is what I've been waiting for ever since the Wii came out, I've imagined this would be a great way to control a media centre. I've used Maya and I love the way the fly-out menus work; point and click and all the options flower outwards from your cursor. All options are contextual. Something gesture based would be cool, too. Like clicking and pulling to the left or right to rewind and forward. The current offering is pretty lame compared to its competition. It's true that the others (Media Center, Boxee, etc.) can be a little "menu-ey" but there's no reason that Apple couldn't offer a lot of the same features but simplified.
