Is it? I don't have Word on my Mac but MSFT often has you download installers that then download all that is necessary for the application. They do this for a lot of Windows software. So what you initially download isn't all the binaries needed to run the application.

now we can all make our high school kids paper in Pages and follow up our yard sales in Numbers...

make it professional and then we'll talk.

- adding 'stock history' is not frequently requested
- pivot tables are frequently used
- data connections are frequently used
- what if analysis is needed
- better performance management in Numbers. I sometimes had to wait 8 minutes and more on a rmbp 15" late 2013
- more filter options
These all seem to be (justifiable) complaints against Numbers. Don't be hating on Pages just because Numbers is a "my first spreadsheet" program...

I think you need to check a newer version of Word, looks like you're still using 2011 there.

recently got a Pages document and I couldn't open it with MS Word. There needs to be better compatibility between the two apps.
There's decent compatibility -- if the person using Pages knows enough to save a copy of their file as an MS Word doc (which Pages has been able to do for a long time). Or they could just Print > Save as PDF to share it. I have no problem sharing my Pages documents.

I hope Pages continues to regain some of its original functionality, but overall this is a good move for Mac users, especially with the iOS versions now being free. Garage Band for iOS is terrific!

In case of having a hackintosh it's really nice, no further frustrations about expiring versions, no need to waste time on finding the right torrent, there are lots of cases where this is a relief.

Wow, your life must really be stressful, eh? Not having to pay Apple a dime for all of their hard work. Phew! Thank goodness, eh?

I hope they continue development of the iWork apps, and are not putting them 'out to pasture'. (Although I fear they might be)

Yes, this is a possibility. But given their financial strength, maybe they determined that this loss is insignificant if it translates into more people using their hardware.

true, finance/BI guy here, guilty

I only have 1 or 2 remarks for Pages.
- page orientation is only defined on the document level. or all pages are portrait or all pages are landscape...
- pasting of tables directly from Numbers can be annoying too sometimes. (especially coming from landscap reporting)

and keynote works quite well too :)

iWork is not worth a cent. So, it should have been free since 2013

I strongly disagree. Keynote is fantastic. Pages and Numbers and missing some basic features, e.g. Pivot tables in numbers and continuous text boxes spanning pages in Pages but they are solid.

Yes, the suite needs more love from Apple. The UI change a few years back sucked. Hopefully they don't have a blind spot on the strategic importance of an office suite like they did with the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro.

But to say it's worthless is not my experience. I hope Apple invests heavily in iWork as it is one of my favorite parts of the Apple ecosystem.

These software tools are one of the main reasons I stuck with macOS when I made the switch from Windows. When I wanted to do some basic document layout, Pages stunned me with how reliable it was versus Word. When I needed to create (objectively way too many) elegant presentations for school, Keynote made me look good. And when I wanted to get into audio production or video editing, I had excellent beginner tools that still packed decent power already installed on my machine.

Which leaves Numbers, I guess. It's fine for the limited data management I do on occasion, but there are lots of free alternatives that work as well or better. I could take it or leave it.

One great new feature with Numbers is being able to have spreadsheet cells return live stock exchange quotes, historical stock info along with metrics/performance, and currency exchange values including history.

That's killer...

How they chose this functionality above pivots I really don't understand. stock exchange is used by a niche or hobbyists looking up their stocks.

I think it's phil schiller who requested that I guess, just for his own use.

Pivots is used by practically everyone.

As a non-power user, I was using MS Office 2016 simply because I had a subscription through my employer. I've recently changed jobs so I'm expecting my licence to be revoked any day.

So, a few days ago, I downloaded Pages and Numbers (I've a 2013 Macbook so they were free even before today's announcement) and opened my .docx CV into Pages, and a couple of simple .xlsx spreadsheets into Numbers. My CV needed about 15 minutes of reformatting (well, 14 minutes of "eh? How the hell do I do that"? and 1 minute of changes) and my spreadsheets look ok off the bat.

I'm sure neither Pages nor Numbers are as fully featured as Word and Excel, but they'll do the job for me. The interface is cleaner and the apps are faster (a "benefit" to them having less functionality I suspect!).

It's really easy to understand. Loads of Apple customers have been using Numbers for along time for a wide variety of uses. Being able to incorporate stock data/metrics is incredibly useful. Thus, Apple included that functionality.

So no matter what Apple does it should be knocked because "it's just business". Ok.

I guess you missed the 'good move' part.
And yes for most part, everything Apple does is for the sake of it's business, brand and shareholders.

fixed your reasoning for you

Any idea why the updates don't work via the App store.. running El Capitan 2010 MBP... I've been trying for weeks. Just seems to hang/spin waiting, still the same even now they are free.

I'm sorry you're still having difficulty understanding why Apple included stock and currency live and historical data in its Numbers spreadsheet program. Many people use that feature and find it incredibly useful.

It is ok if you don't find it useful. Simply keep using what makes you happy.

I'm assuming this also is free to those of us who are stuck on El Capitan. Right?
