This was certainly a surprise in he keynote..

I do wonder how thy will manage this as it makes the desktop apps rather redundant for mac. More interesting that now pc will now experience iWork which could break office's monopoly if this s done right and marketed!

Watch this space!

I don't think that'll happen. Google Docs has a much better chance of doing that and even that is not likely to happen. Pretty hard to kill what has become an industry standard on just about every computer out there including Macs.

I don't know if I wasn't paying attention or not, but I presume they're not making these apps free to everyone? Especially with how much their counterparts actually cost. How are they managing this?

I would presume anyone with an AppleID...

I hope you're wrong. These subset differences are what hurts the iCloud sync usage. I hate making a spreadsheet on my Mac, save it to iCloud, then try using in on iOS, then getting hit with formatting errors. Then save changes, go back to my Mac, and find more formatting errors and to find several display options have been removed.

I should be able to create a document on my iMac and save to iCloud, revise it on my iPhone while in the car. Then finalize it on my Macbook. All this with zero formatting errors and no lose to formatting options. And I would expect the same for the web versions.

Your wish can never been entirely fulfilled, if for no other reason than font issues. Theoretically the browser-based version could have access to your desktop font library, but unless Apple makes some major changes to iOS, formatting issues will crop up on the iPad/iPhone unless you stick strictly to the basics. I also think it's unrealistic to expect a fully-featured desktop app to be duplicated functionally on an iPad, let alone on an iPhone. I just don't see how that can be done.

They did this to catch up with others & make an update to the iWork Suite at least every 5 years. My copy says that it was made in Nov 2008. So they're down to less than 5 months now.

If they don't make Numbers at least 2 - 3 times more powerful than it is now they need to make a disclaimer that this is just a joke spreadsheet program & not meant for real use by anyone. Just like they say Numbers will open up my income tax prep program, but the number of errors that need to be fixed was close to or in the 4 figure category & that was before it made it to the 2nd page.

Pages does a much better job as it was updated 4 times compared to only 2 versions of Numbers. We use it for making all of our cards that we send to customers, friends, & relatives. Being able to do this when we on the web with none of our Macs or iToys are available would be nice.

Now if Apple can show that they are at least a little serious about iWork I will go along with it as I did up to the last change over 4.5 years ago. I doubt if I had anything to do with it but I wrote Apple & told everyone at the many training classes that I keep taking at Apple that I would purchase the iToy versions of iWork if & when Apple showed me with an update to iWork. Then to see if it is a real update or to see if it is just being done so that we have reason to use a browser version of a program. Who wants to start learning a program that is dead & not really being supported?

----------

They actually announced that new versions of iWork for both OSX and iOS is coming in the fall.

They spent so much time talking just about the iCloud version that i was not sure they actually said that they were actually going to make a new Mac & iToy versions. Where did I miss it?

Oh the Skeuomorphism!

I guess they will flatten and de-skeuomorph all there products once iOS 7 is officially released, I see depth, texture and style in that beta screenshot.

Long live flat and boring!

Maybe the web developers didn't get the memo.

You want flat and boring? Really?

I use iWork on a regular basis (I do dozens of papers and presentations for school each year, plus I sometimes use Numbers for a variety of things.) Keynote is rock solid - there's absolutely no need for PowerPoint for anyone. Numbers, I understand its limitations, but I personally never need Excel. Pages is the only app from the suite that I ever find lacking. Sometimes when I'm writing long documents with complicated page numbering, table of contents, figures, etc, and annotating everything, I find it necessary to resort to Word.

The biggest things Apple needs to add are mixed graphs and equation editors. I'd also really like it if they could improve the drawing tools... (IE, make it possible to easily draw shapes with holes.)

Though Word and Pages can be used for long-form writing, they are "amateur" tools. Scrivener trounces both.

Don't know if this has already been questioned, but what happens if you have one apple ID for iCloud and another for your iTunes purchases, will we have to buy iWork again?

The only solution I can think of is having an activation code in your previous iWork purchase to enter on your iCloud account.

I don't use iCloud or the like but I have a question. When the network connection is down (dead spot, ISP failure like this past Sunday here, storms, etc) what happens? Are you still able to work locally on documents or is everything stored across the network and thus inaccessible?

In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised, for security purposes. iOS 7 testers had to put films on their phones to restrict the viewing angle.

Right at the beginning, before he discusses the iCloud stuff.

That would be nice, but it'll probably anyone with an AppleID that has bought iWork for Mac or iOS.

AAAAAND I can't login.

My developer Apple ID differs from my personal one and my username has a space in it.

The iCloud login won't allow me to enter a space.

Use the email address on your paid developer account, not a username.

Ugh. Ever since iOS 7 was announced I can't stand to look at iCloud and it's hideous, shiny and overly detailed icons any more. It needs a "flat" update ASAP.

Care to explain? I've looked at the Scrivener interface and it appears to be gargantuan. Maybe I'm missing its multiple joys, but Scrivener doesn't appear to be anything I'd seek out.

I wrote, designed, and created the camera-ready artwork for an entire 200+ page hardcover book in Pages. Is that your definition of amateur?

I wonder the cost as well. Is it free? Included with the app purchase?

Right now, you need a paid developer account, but the apps are free. Free developer account doesn't work. I can use Keynote which I definitely didn't pay for.

When it is released, who knows? Maybe same as iRadio, ad supported but free if you have iTunes Match? Maybe if you pay for iCloud instead of using the free 5GB only?

Maybe Apple is just happy to hurt Google to the maximum extent they can?

But who would trust Google with their data?

There's a problem with the sign in page for this application right now.. sign in screen is a black page with nothing else.

I'm looking forward to this one, as someone else noted, perhaps it wasn't the most paid attention to part of the presentation, but I think that being able to use Pages in a browser is huge The fact it works with windoze can't hurt either

Now if only I can sign in and get it downloaded

For the love of god, please fix that website and update it from the 1990's look. So un-Apple looking. Start stealing Google designers Apple!

It's not really a 1990s look... It's a 2010ish look.

The current design trend toward flatness and bright colors is much more "1990s" imho! (Not that it's necessarily a bad thing.)

They are bringing new mac and ios apps later this year

I wonder if these will be free updates for people who bought iWork '09.

Not that they are that expensive, just wondering because it will be interesting to see how Apple handles updates to its major apps. At some point in the future you've got to believe Apple will charge for upgrades to Aperture and FCP.

i expect if you got it through the mac app store then it will be free

I have used both (iWork and Office 2010) and iWork is way, way behind on what Office 2010 offers in terms of functionality. They will need to play catch up big time if they want to be an alternative at all ...

Playing catch up ... that seems to become the dominant theme with Apple ... too bad.

Well the new version is coming this year - it's more about the price.

The iWork apps are £13.99 each outright on any machines - ios apps - £5
£80 a year for office 365 on 5 machines
£110 outright on 1 machine.

I think office is great and you can do tons with it but for 90% of people iWork is more than enough. And for me anyway it's much nicer to use though I do not like the inspector windows - very old school I am guessing that will be gone in the next version later this year.

Using word to write a simpler letter is like opening a peanut shell with a shotgun.

Imagine how foolish I feel right now.

Ha, you get my point tho. How many people actually use 20% of Word's capabilities. I've never run a macro on it in my life. Or mail merged or used comic sans....

It is flat, what a lot of people are not talking about it it's layers and 3d depth.

Some of it is lovely like the Backgrounds and icon motion... but the folder implementation is now horrible when you zoom into a folder

Bring back the split in ios6 and have the icons zoom from behind!

If they follow past practice there will be no free or discounted upgrade.

I don't know this for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that it will be a free sevice like icloud email, photostream, etc. You'll need an iCloud account of course, which are only available to Apple hardware owners (isn't that right?). I doubt most people would be satisfied with just using the web version anyway, and would want to buy the Mac and/or iOS version eventually.
