The music app can handle your music the same way iTunes did without you needing to subscribe to Apple Music and Apple TV+ isn't advertised in the OS. It's just an app that you never have to open if you don't want to. Such minor things to complain about.

Exactly, I actually prefer the Music application above iTunes now, especially if you go to Preferences -> Restrictions and disable Apple Music and the iTunes Store, suddenly it's a very nice music manager and player that doesn't nag you about buying or subscribing to things at all. I also have never ever seen advertisements about subscribing to Apple TV+ by the way, the app is there but if you never use it you'll never notice it.

Also, Catalina runs great here, I have no idea what everybody is complaining about.

Okay I did the group policy editor one and will see how it goes. Either one of these methods is more for a tech than the average user. I couldn't explain to my non nerdy friends how to do this but I could easly tell them how to turn off auto updates in Mac. It's nice to see people have developed a workaround to M$ BS but it shouldn't be necessary. It should be a check box in the Windows update section.

You are absolutely, 100% on the nose. Window's settings are a convoluted mess with on average 5 different partially redundant locations for changes to be made.

Great tip! I too use Catalina and zero issues. I'm honestly surprised because I'm not good with change so some of them did irk me at first but I'm happy with it now.

Who is this supposed to benefit? If a user is knowledgeable enough to know how to hide the update, they are surely going to know Catalina exists.

Nagging your power-users about something they’ve actively chosen to disregard adds up to a sum total of zero.

Can’t quite understand Apple’s thinking on this one.

How fun that I'd have to decline an otherwise welcomed security update over this nonsense. That message is quite cryptic too. Are they saying that Software Update as a frontend is going away and that updates will occur on their own? Do not like the sound of that, takes a Great degree of control from the user.

There's a reason that people aren't upgrading to Catalina. Whether that be general instability, the new iTunes breakup apps, 32-bit apps, or other. Trying to shove it down their throats so your numbers look good is pathetic. Maybe try making a decent OS again?

I suspect this is only the beginning. While I hate that this is most likely the case, it's just the way things have become. I remember when we thought Lion was the end and was the worst mac OS version ever, now it actually looks quite good compared to this. Looks like Mojave is the end of the road, at least for a time.

Nah just go into Advanced Settings in software update.

They also roll the automatic updates out slowly so they can get feedback. I couldn't get the May Update released this week because my region hasn't got it yet. I downloaded the May Update manually.

This is obviously hidden really well because they don't want the average user turning off auto updates. I can see where M$ is coming from but it should have been just a nag pop up asking if you want to install and not automatically installing when you might be doing something important.

Let the outrage commence!

outrage yes.

this is an unnecessary and ridiculous move by Craig Federighi and the team. Many users do NOT wish to upgrade the OS until their more comfortable or certain the OS performs adequately or with existing installed software.

forcing users to upgrade is not only blind to this, its ignorant and actually stupid as Apple employees and programmers will also be affected.

imagine their working on a future OS and get updated and their work goes BUNK?!! Then what? We already know CCC fails to create bootable backups because of a flag issue. There is also teams of IT supper that’ll now have to flood the supper lines at Apple for issues that’ll affect the company employees for which they support.

this is gone far too much and a better reason that shows Federighi should not be running the show himself, imho.

forced lock-in at the software level, this kind of action will further push users to Microsoft or Linux.

I agree with you that I hope it doesn't become automatic like in Windows. I want to be able to do an update when I want to. I don't mind notifications though.

I don't think this change forces you to update. You just can't hide updates anymore. I'll be outraged along with you when they force updates though

Users love it when choice is removed
You still have the choice not to update. Calm down :)

Am I the only person that likes Catalina? I've had zero issues.

If you only use it for web surfing and other trivial tasks, then you're fine.

Generally speaking, updating to the newest MacOS versions are a risky gamble because of how slow Apple addresses issues and getting 3rd parties to update their apps to be compliant when needed.

Can’t say I’m surprised. With all the bugs floating around they can’t afford NOT to update your OS. Like it or not.
That makes no sense. Mojave is still supported and receives security fixes. There are legitimate reasons why many don't want to update to Catalina. And not being able to suppress the update notifications for Catalina anymore may actually be counter-productive, because people running Mojave may miss security updates for that because they think the badge on the Software Update widget refers to the Catalina update.

That said, as long as they don't force us to actually install major updates (like Windows 10 does), the notification doesn't bother me too much.

From what I can see there, you can delay updates but not avoid it.

There's no point avoiding the Windows updates anyway. It's still Windows 10 after you update. Each update are just small tweaks. It's really hard for apps to break on Windows because the system has legacy support for apps going back so many years. I got Steam games that came out before most youtuber geniuses were born.

Really stupid practice. I can’t believe they don’t realize that not everyone can upgrade to the latest software for a multitude of reasons. It’s great to not have to the OS bug the hell out of you every day when you know you’re going to ignore it. It’s not like the layman would use that command. It doesn’t make sense to remove it.

It's not about avoiding them but rather installing them when you want to. Meaning not while you're working on a critical document needed for school or work
