I really hope apple doesn't acknowledge weakness, it will be a disappointment. Ideally they'll quietly change the hardware as soon as they're outside of the return period for the first 1.7 million units and never talk about it publicly again. I don't like an apologetic apple.

In which case most would just go into the store and complain about poor battery or random drops....and get a warranty replacement. Works out the same.

That's not how it works. It might cost Apple 3-4 dollars to make, but the true cost to Apple IS $29 per bumper given out. Anyone here who has taken business classes will confirm this. This quite an expensive solution, and given such, I don't expect this to happen. I suppose we will revisit this tomorrow.

Stay in school buddy..

That's OK as a temporary workaround, but it is not a fix. I'm disappointed by how many Apple fans consider "hold it differently" to be the solution. :(

Buy a case!!!!! Why do people not want to protect their investment first of all? If its not worth it and you're a diehard "naked iPhone" fan, then just take the phone back. I personally think it sucks to HAVE to buy one, but this phone is great, and if its gonna cost you $5-$30 depending on the case, I think you'll live.

Again, I don't think its ok to HAVE TO BUY A CASE. I do feel that it is worth it though considering how good this phone is. I'm fairly confident that Apple is fixing the issue whether its software or hardware. If its hardware, i'm sure they're changing something in the design and we will be able to exchange when the time comes. I'm not affected by the issue though, so no need for me.

you have to realize that for some people, simply using a case with the new phone does not help the reception issue. while i agree that the free-fall of bars is less evident with a case on, the reception is still a major issue.

for instance, i have always had PERFECT 3g service in my home. while at home on my 3gs, i never ever fell below 5 bars. the speed was fantastic and i went months without having a dropped call. surfing safari was incredibly fast, sometimes i couldnt tell if i was on wifi or just regular ol' 3g.

with the new iphone 4, my bars seem to fluctuate quite a bit. they fluctuate even without using this death grip as described by many on this site and the media. i have also noticed that using internet intensive apps, and using safari is almost worthless. it takes forever to load even, even when its showing 5 bars! when i try to make a call, half the time it doesn't start the ringing process. its completely infuriating, especially when my 3gs was the most amazing piece of mobile technology i've ever seen/used.

i have no idea why this is happening. i'll be waiting another week to see if this rumored software update will fix the issue. keep in mind i have my sleek ifrogz case protecting my investment. if nothing is done about this issue then i'll have no choice but to return the phone and go back to my 3gs.

i realize none of you could care less if i return the 4 or not, but i wanted to shed some light on the fact that even in areas where the 3g service is spectacular, this new phone is falling way behind the previous models in terms of usability as a cell phone.

yes, because apple is so great they don't have to take responsibility for their lack of development and testing. i mean, it's ******** apple, they're so much better than we are and they deserve our money for making a faulty product so that we can buy the next one full price when it releases. ARE YOU ******** SERIOUS? i hope that your post was a sarcastic post because i didn't sense it to be one. i'll refrain from insulting your intelligence. have a nice day. :)

I guess we'll see. But like previously stated, there's been way too many threads concerning this topic that I don't know what to believe. I won't take anyone's word for it just because they talked to some voice on the telephone that's self-titled "important".

Although, I wouldn't mind a free bumper at all! Black is fine with me, although I prefer to get the white. Either way, I dunno how this would work, considering I bought mine from Best Buy.

Stop putting your hand there when calling.

At what point in time do you think that will sink in?

I hope your joking!

I’m amazed how many people are defending Apple. I love some of the new software features and think the screen is fantastic but at the end of the day I can't make calls from home due to the signal drop and there’s no excuse. As a pure phone it’s the worst one I have ever owned. Its going back today.

Overexaggerate much?

I have had my iPhone since launch day and have yet not experienced the dropped call or bad reception. In fact it seems I have better reception. When I had the iPhone 3G, I had either edge service or no service in the underground area at work with the new phone I have 2-3 bars of 3G service. So for me the reception is better than it was before.

As for cases, I finally bought a case last night. For the several days without a case I felt nervous every time I took the phone out of my pocket. The phone itself is very smooth and therefore could easily slip out of my hand. A case, whether a bumper of not usually will give you a firmer grip. It's worth buying a case just for the better grip on the phone.

Dropping calls because of how the phone is held is ridiculous, particularly when other phones in the same situation don't. If that's the way it's going to be, then fine, but don't expect people to like the situation. People will rightfully gripe about it as long as it keeps happening. It's a significant comprise for owning an otherwise great device.

If someone has a problem with a device you own and enjoy, that's your issue if it bends you out of shape. Trying to quell their discontent because it upsets you is not fair to those experiencing a legitimate problem.

The problem is real.

A case helps, but it still loses signal.

Wow.

Regardless of the ultimate fix or if a person ends up returning it, there is zero reason for someone who knows this to be a problem to keep touching the phone there when using it.

That is simply stupid. Yet people keep admitting that is exactly what they are doing.

No it's not stupidity and to suggest otherwise is pure ignorance. I am left handed. Not with everything but I certainly hold my phone as such. Personally I don't have a problem with the phone. Works fine for me. I do lose bars when web browsing because of the way I hold it. That said for you to say hold it differently is just as dumb as apples response.

LoL! Just noticed your screen name is "marksman". I can only assume you enjoy weapons and marksmanship. So are you left or right handed? Imagine being told that whatever your reply is that it's wrong. See the point now?
