Lol, traffic speed (not the speed limit-- the speed people actually drive) where I live is 90-95 on the highways. I'm often significantly over 100 if it's a low traffic time of day.

Whatever it currently is, the current distance has resulted in a couple full brake force events, which really creates a dangerous situation.
No, you driving too fast has resulted in those events.

I found this amazing life hack so you can’t ever get a speeding ticket, no matter how sneaky the cop is.

what you do is, when driving... you don’t exceed the posted speed limit.

I've got a better way: simply drive 2X the speed limit.

1) By driving 2X the speed limit, you're only on the road for half the time, which reduces your chances of encountering a police officer by 50%.

2) Additionally, you virtually eliminate the chance of a police officer coming up behind you, which is another 50% reduction!

:p

I hope “at least I had good tires” helps you sleep at night when mowing over a kid.
Kids shouldn't be playing on an interstate I would be more angry at the parents. When I was stationed at Minot I would go 10mph over but I wouldn't see another car for a half hour sometimes. When I was stationed at Andrews and had to drive on I95 everyday I was only 5 over to pass then returning to the legal speed in the right lane. East coast driving especially Boston was a whole new experience than the Midwest.

Even in rural Montana every sane person capped it at 80 your either suicidal if you drive somewhere like Boston or DC or looking to go to prison for reckless driving. If you want to go over 100 go to a track where the people around you maintain their cars and know how to drive you can even do 150mph+ if your cars up to it which is something I think everyone should experience at least once.

I’m pretty sure it was your driving that created the dangerous situation.

FYI in civilised countries, driving that much over the speed limit would mean instant dangerous driving charge and loss of licence.

oh well of course. If you go 4x the speed limit you can turn the earth backwards and you give the cop a ticket. 🙄

They get pretty inaccurate overtime especially if you swap out for a different tire size. GPS based speed is always the way to go.
If you change the overall tire size, get the speedometer adjusted to use the new size. This is hardly a new concept, I knew about it as a teenager in the late 90s.

The adjustments are still off up to 3mph in my experience 5-6 without your never going to beat GPS for an accurate measurement.

Very cool. The reporting accidents/speed traps feature in Google Maps is the one thing I really miss in Apple Maps.

I hope we get this in Canada straight away.
Sadly, I have a hunch this will be U.S.-only at first. Right now if you ask Siri to "report a hazard" while navigating in the iOS 14.5 beta, it comes right out and says quite plainly that "Incident Reporting isn't available in Canada."

While that could of course change by the time iOS 14.5 gets released, the fact that Apple has gone to the extend of putting that response in suggests that it will be a staged release.

At least we have way better Look Around coverage, though :D

That's good information to know. Thanks for sharing. 👍

My biggest problem with apple maps while driving with carplay (in my wife's car -- mine has integrated nav) is that it doesn't distinguish between major and minor roads. It makes it really hard to get my bearings. Is there any way to change that?

I think it's getting more and more likely that Google Maps and Waze will be merged into a singular program. Surprised they haven't done this years ago.
I'm on the Waze beta team and I can tell you that I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon (although I'm also surprised...)

You are trying to joke.

However, reality is, that the higher the average speed on the road, the fewer cars in the road over a time period. This is simple math, and of course beyond the understanding of most on Earth.

That is why higher average speed on a given road does not result in higher accident rate or death, and usually has a slight negative correlation. In fact legally enforced reduced speeds typically result in higher death rates.

If you support lower speed limits, you are complicit in murder.

The Germans know what they're doing. They're quite logical in general, and are less likely to believe in "scary."

It is this feature that’s kept me using Waze over apple maps. I can’t wait to use it

I've done 10+ track events (so 20-30 days on track) every year for the last 15 years :p

When the flow of traffic is going 95, 110 isn't that high. My biggest issue with my EV is that it's 94mph top speed often means I'm blocking up the road on the highway.

The speed limits in this country are absurd. They were set in the 1950s, when many cars couldn't achieve them. Then they were reduced in the 80s, for the fuel crunch. Today's cars are orders of magnitude more capable, competent, safe, etc-- and yet the speed limits remain unchanged.

I value my time far too much to abide by them. Happily, that's the norm around here.

Thank God.

Waze has been driving me nuts with frequent UI freezing etc. Surprised but delighted Apple is doing this.

It is really sad Apple "passed" $750m WAZE opportunity to begin with.
I think Apple spent more money on "improvements" to their maps

Wow. Driving at 100 on a public road you should lose your privilege to drive for years. Total douchebag move.

Wow - you could never live in Europe or drive on the Ohio Turnpike. Plenty of people on Ohio Turnpike going 80 to over 100. Road was made for that.

Europeans are better drivers than us. Lived their for four years and they are much better drivers than a lot of those slow pokes in the US. The slow pokes are the dangerous ones. Especially when they are going 55 in a 70 on the Ohio Turnpike in the third lane, which is a passing lane. Fast drivers pay attention more, where slow ones most of the time have no clue.

Their privileges should be revoked too then! LOL

im curious what logic you’re using to think that speed limits set in the 90s would no longer be applicable due to any of that.

So cars with bigger tires, that are more aerodynamic, have more HP, more safety features, and accelerate better because they have better parts, should adhere to speed limits in the 90's? Don't think so. It's way too easy to accelerate faster than the speed limits established during that time period.

Everyone speeds.... Because speed limits are outdated. The only exception to the rule is in neighborhoods -- I never exceed 30 mph in neighborhoods, but drive closer to 15-20mph. Myself and many others have been through speed traps driving 10-15 mph without an issue, which tells you even the police think they're a joke. But just like with everything else, there's that one officer that's having a bad day and will knock you for driving 68 in a 65.

Speed traps are designed to generate more revenue for the government, lawyers, and insurance companies, that is it. Take away the insurance company lobbyists and suddenly those speed limits will become realistic for today's cars (10-15mph higher on average).

Apparently we need to drive like we're in a parade. I've found southern drivers to be more aware and realistic in their speeds.
