Had another opportunity to use the New Maps App for my Golf outing. Going to a course in a near by city it gave me perfect directions. I had been there before last year (my club plays there once per year) and my car navigation gave me a slight different direction but I like this route better. Anyway, the off ramp was closed for repair and it took me off the next one and then gave me new directions which I missed the turn and then it then gave me new directions again and got me back on the freeway to get back to my correct off ramp and right to the Golf course. This new app is so much better then the older one is not even a comparison for me and my usage.

I really hope they are not using all their energy to fix the Flyover glitches and bad satellite images. I know those are bad and all those images on the internet look embarrassing for Apple, but Flyover and satellite images are just extras to the actual maps. And the maps are broken all over the world. It may be fine in USA or some metropolitan cities outside of USA, but in many places the maps are so bad that they are completely unusable. They say it's going to get better, but fixing all those broken maps and POI data is going to take years.

It may take years but it does not have too. Google is not the only company making quality maps. As you probably know a lot of the map data comes from TomTom and some have shown that the TomTom maps do not have some of the problems that the Apple Maps App have. So if the Map Data is accurate but the Maps App is broken then it should not take years to fix. Lastly, I do not think Apple wants to build out the Map Data themselves (this would take forever). I believe they plan to acquire the data from other companies like TomTom.

Street View is much better - it give you the view from YOUR CAR SEAT. You can see street signs and turning lanes.

You can't see CRAP from 3D rendered Flyovers.

I disagree. It depends on where they shot the photo for streetview. Sometimes all you can see is trees (For example my house all you can see is trees). Sometimes you can see part of a strip mall (when I was looking for a restaurant and you couldn't even see any detail so all I could tell is it looks something like this which several strip malls looked similar enough to).

And I can see stuff from the 3D flyovers. I can see what shape the building is, I can see what shape the buildings nearby are to get a relative idea of what to look for to know I am getting close (as well as trees and other objects nearby to look for). And you have just as good a chance of seeing signs. And you can see the lanes that are going into it (and not just hope their picture managed to grab that). You can look at it from all angles which helps you see more stuff like signs or lanes to look for and other buildings (unlike street view where you are at the whim of what they decided to shoot and what got missed in between photos). You have a continious view of the area so you're not just looking between photos and wondering how they connect or if they missed some stuff in between photos.

Have you even checked out flyover?

Tried out turn by turn today, and wow what a great experience. Everything was fast and fluid. Data accurate and loaded quickly. I really like the maps app. If people would quit complaining and file the proper error reports the app will improve. Just as Siri has. These things take time.

I never had an accurate or pleasant experience with Google maps. I'm glad Apple is yet again building it's own service, in the long run it will be better for the consumers.

I usually use MotionX but figured I'd give this a try the other day. No issues at all. Everything was perfect. Maybe it depends on your location but I have no complaints where I am (MA/RI area).

how long ago was this?

i have an ancient droid pro and it has turn by turn directions. did you even install google navigation from the play store?

I stand corrected. Its been a while but well within that time frame.
I never downloaded that app.
I did tonight and see what you mean.....although it hangs and wont load, I get it though.
I had the one that was almost identical to the iPhone Google Maps and it never had turn by turn as never on iPhone.
It was just a map with a blue dot.

I still stand by my thoughts on Apple Maps. I know others are complaining, but now like 5 days in or so I still love it.
Ive had no issue with missing etc.
Works awesome for me....but Im just one so....

So far in my own little tests of the Apple vs Google is this, Apple is far better. I used my iPad 1 running iOS 5 and still having the Map app from Google, against my 3rd Gen iPad which has been upgraded to iOS 6. My results are as follows:

Home Address
Google version of Maps ad my apartment a half mile down the road, and in the center of the palm nearby.

Apple version correctly pinpointed the street and even the building I lived.

I then used a familiar local landmark (The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. Google and Apple had both pinpointed the theme park.

Using the Magic Kingdom I then did a travel route I then asked for directions to my current location.
Google - The route from the Magic Kingdom had ne drive the same route via interstate highways with the exeption that the place I live in is actually being placed a half mile away in the dark

Apple maps not only pinpointed my apartment correctly but gave me the same route I drive everyday PLUS 2 alternate routes. One of the alternate routes ws a route I take when the main route is backed up, the third route was a route I was not at all familiar with, but did start and end in the same places.

I guess it's fine if your're only planning to travel between your apartment and the Magic Kingdom. What happens when you're told to travel to somewhere you've never travelled before?

i used the transit directions feature today and like it a lot more than google maps.

you download apps like hopstop or embark and then choose which one you want to use. embark not only gives you directions but on some train lines they tell you when the train is supposed to arrive because the NYC subway has real time train tracking on some lines.

google maps doesn't do that

The worst thing i have ever done this year is upgrade the 4s to iOS6. mainly because of the map is a major disaster, (yes the 3D did look really nice but thats not the point)

I travel a lot, and street view is by far the best thing i ever had, it gives you the actual view of the street, last week i was in France and the location i need to visit is pretty hard to find. fire up streetview and bam! saw the mailbox! saw the phonebooth! there we go!

and lets get back to the basic, I would assume map accuracy is most important feature? some places did disappeared...

If google is so good at maps why dont they offer a street view navigation? I am telling you Apple Maps will cause healthy competition between Google and Apple to improve our experience. Google shut out IOS not giving us Turn by turn. Also to be honest thier turn by turn is not that great.

they work pretty damn good in long island new york and new york city. I could imagine they dont work as good in areas with much more vast land and open areas. for a first release i say maps arent that bad.

I keep hearing how awful the new apple maps app is, so if you had actually read all of my post you would have seen that this was my own little test. The Google Map app on my 1st Gen iPad has me living a half mile away in the middle of the lake. The new Apple app pinpointed my apartment, therefore Apple wins. The Google App did give proper route information I just have to adjust the route or end up in the lake. The Apple App not only gave the same route to the correct location, but also provided 2 other alternate routes.

I have used other GPS systems in my car where the location was off and even OnStar directions has given the wrong location. In every address I tested in the Apple App i did get the correct location, in the Google App, there was a one major mistake (Where I live) and a second error was a major hotel in the Chicago area.

Over time the Apple app will get better, the Google app has been on the iPhone since 2007 and it still can't get my own address correct, to me that is one major flaw. From what I have seen so far of the Apple app is pretty good.

To me, this just like antenna gate, except it's now Map Gate. People couldn't find anything else wrong with the iPhone 5 so they gotta make a big stink about the Map app. Every map app or GPS has errors people get over it, keep calm and carry on.

Yeah - there's nothing wrong with the iPhone... like scratches, wi-fi issues and poor build quality - not at all. People just complained about maps because they were bored... while waiting to be rescued from the lake they drove into using Apple Maps.

To OP: Oh yes it does...

I'm glad Apple's Maps work for you, but, for myself and many others, they're useless. At the very least Apple should have acknowledged they're barely past beta in some areas and offer the choice of changing the maps or not.

Instead, they forced me into their new Maps and crippled a bunch of my 3rd party apps and various features in the process.

It doesn't suck but it needs improvement. Just like android 1.0 didn't totally suck, but needed time to get better. Still android did well. In that case Apple had more experience or bought it, now it's apples turn.

If you can already see what you're looking at why is it not good to have a view that you can't see?

google maps doesn't do that

I'll tell you what Google Maps does that Apple Maps doesn't, crash phones. Customer of mine had her phone restart automatically when she tried to view Maps on her Android. An error popped up twice, one I've never seen before, and then her phone just restarted itself. Didn't think Android's applications were that capable. When will Apple's Maps rise to that level?
