Of course it doesnt suck as an idea or a concept of having 3d or whatever, it's the facts that apple released and unfinished application which sucks. Why go from using the best thing in google maps to using something heavily worse without at least spending more time and match and better google maps?
Just a bit of a rush job, but it.l be there in a few years and well all love it!

It's clear that most people are finding that the new maps app is not at all good.

Meanwhile, some people say the new maps app works well and offers accurate POIs etc. in their locale.

What's odd is that those people who say the maps work for them seem to be happy to leave it at that. Knowing that the maps are likely to be useless away from home, they still take the view that all's well in the new app.

Don't these people go out?

The whole point of a map is to provide reliable guidance and information when you're in unfamiliar territory. How can anyone defend a map system on the basis that it's fine for their own back yard?

It's like saying you'd be happy with a calculator that only gives the right answer for 2+2.

In what looks to be a post-apocalyptic world, Apple's newly renovated flagship Manhattan store apparently now serves as a gas station.

That's obviously a simple data glitch...there IS an "oil and gas" company located in that building.

I think I could easily distinguish between an oil and gas company and an actual gas station simply by the name.

Nice try though...the Apple store there is clearly marked as an Apple store.

We know that a vocal minority has had problems. Nobody's polled users and found that "most people" are having problems.

Wow, you're misrepresenting people AND being a jerk about it and insulting prople like me. Nice.

I'd say people have been trying to share their experiences. Most people I've read have wanted to explain that their experience. Like me - I mapped dozens of places around the world and couldn't find a way to break Apple Maps. I don't think we're saying that it's not broken, just maybe isn't nearly as broken as you'd think if all you read we're the negative comments. Either way, we still don't really know how broken it is, though it seems clear that it's less reliable in at least some areas than Google.

Although I've not been able to reproduce a problem with anywhere I've tested (including several rural areas I'll be visiting next month), I'm still concerned. But I'm also not going to run around with my hands in the air, at least not until someone does some research on how bad it is. Heck, Google and Navigon have regularly tried to lead me to bad addresses, down closed roads, etc. And I'm aware that like usual, people having problems tend to get represented far higher on message boards than those that aren't. People not having problems are way less motivated to post, so having a huge complaint thread amongst millions of users doesn't tell much about how broken it is.

All I'm saying is, both my experience and yours are anecdotal. It sounds likely that the quality is probably worse overall, just tough to say how much since there are also lots of people NOT having problems. And a lot of those people "go out", you big jerk :)

Yes it is Hampshire. I agree googles imagery was good, but I have found it is clearer on Apple Maps.

You are correct. The picture is slightly better.

That as far as I could zoom in with Apple maps so I set it similar with Google.

I know you weren't originally quoting me and you were specifically talking about satellite view but just in this one area you notice things missing from the Apple map.

The one POI on apples map is "Quality Toy", according to yelp they have a store front at 58 middle rd. So it looks misplaced. This is also damning for Google since its not there, however if you search for the name of the store you can find it.

A vocal minority having problems is a good indicator for there being a problem;
even if a poll says that "most people" don't have a problem.

Exactly, though I think that's putting it mildly.

But I'm also not going to run around with my hands in the air, at least not until someone does some research on how bad it is.

The exact degree of uselessness of the new maps is yet to be determined. I'm sure apple have it in hand to carry out the research you desire. Then after that they might consider fixing it.

People not having problems are way less motivated to post, so having a huge complaint thread amongst millions of users doesn't tell much about how broken it is.

Yes it does. Each post reporting incorrect data, missing data, misplaced data etc. adds to the empirical defects pile and in essence, tells us "how broken it is." You can't choose to dilute those hard and fast negative observations with millions of people who simply haven't noticed and conclude that everything's fine.
(edit - sorry, that's not quite right. You CAN do that, but only if you're in marketing.)

All I'm saying is, both my experience and yours are anecdotal.

You speak for yourself. My experiences of the new maps' failings are measurable and reproduceable - as are the vast majority of posters' experiences on this board.

Oh, and while I'm not exactly sure what a "big jerk" is - I thank you for the epithet and assume it is a traditional compliment when addressing a senior intellect.

Your title should be changed to something like
"Apple Maps DON'T SUCK ( for me )!"

Which is great. BUT.. unless you've been under a rock there are plenty of people having issues with it and some serious mapping errors. Sure, no mapping is perfect, Google Maps isn't perfect but Apple Maps has a lot of serious issues that need fixing.

Apple maps is terrible compared to even apples old google maps app. Start comparing it to google maps on android and its 1000 times worse. I can't believe people are so blinded by apple that they would argue that apples maps is good.

I have been using it the past couple of days and haven't had any issue. Then again, I don't live in the middle of nowhere, a 3rd world nation, or England.

I had heaps of driving to do this a.m. and Apple Maps performed like a champ - - turn by turn was spot on. Some of the photo overlays are still a bit wonky, but the furor is certainly overblown. I wouldn't be surprised to hear if it was manufactured by Google and it's fans to pressure Apple into weakening it's position with allowing Google Maps as a standalone.

I'm glad to see this thread exists and look forward to hearing lots of hands-on reports from other MacRumours members who've actually used Apple Maps!

The satellite imagery where I live is more up-to-date than what Google's was, but it's still pretty bad.

I tried doing a search for Heathrow (as in the airport), instead it directs me to some business in Glasgow called BDL Hotel Heathrow Holdings. If you search Heathrow Airport or even BAA Heathrow - no results are found. Its pretty much the same for most searches which are pretty damn obvious but it's unable to find.

It works great in my area. Yesterday I was out looking at homes within a 10 mile radius and it worked perfect. It is obvious to me and others that the problems are based on where you live. Hard to believe some can not understand that. Kind of like comparing AT&T vs. Verizon Wireless coverage. Some make the very same comments about one or the other being terrible but it is simply where you live that makes one or the other terrible.

My guess is that in a few months this will be old news once the majority of the users do their own testing and determine the apps works great for them.

Also, if your main use for the App is "voice turn by turn navigation" then the new Maps App is 1000 times better then the prior which was pretty useless for that purpose. Because of that I hardly used the prior Maps App and instead bought Navigon. Since iOS 6 I stopped using Navigon since for me the new Maps App is much simpler to use.

Unbelievable that this topic even exists, it's a well established fact that apple's map app is inferior to google's solution.

What we have here is Apple viewing their rivalry with google as a higher priority than consumer satisfaction.

It was probably Google forbidding turn by turn on iDevices so they forced Apple to take this route.
