To some extent it's already happening in the Apple's ecosystem. Granted, it's not at Google's or social networks' level.

If you open the App Store app there're already ads. The featured/relevant apps are pushed to you based on a marketing strategy behind them – or are you thinking that they are casually placed there?

The same goes for new tracks/albums in Music app.

If this rumor will be confirmed, I guess the same will happen with Maps. Paying commercial activities will have more visibility (priority/highlighted) than others.

Why should I care that OTA is about 25% ads when I’m paying 0$ for it? The problem with live channel services is you are paying a lot of money only to get fed ads. The percentage is pretty irrelevant at that point.
To me the percentage is relevant as it is quite annoying. Hence my comment.

I think the same thing will happen when they release the long rumored cheaper Apple TV. That "low" cost will be used as justification for third party ads being shown in the ATV interface, even for the older more expensive models.

Whenever I brought up that ads in News and Stocks was the start and we had to make it known that that sucks or else it would start creeping into everything else, people here were like you're just complaining it's not as bad as Windows...Well here comes the encroaching part. Especially where most of their growing services revenue is from the app store gatekeeping and Google payments which are all lumped in as one thing which is increasingly under scrutiny, so they have to show some services revenue growth.

I don't love that. The deal used to be that we paid a 30% margin on hardware but at least we were free of that for the device life. This will get worse unless we're loud.

I hate this. I pay out the ***ing nose for Apple devices and services because they have at least some degree less of ensh*ttification. If they keep doing crap like this, it devalues the whole thing.

edit: used a bit.ly link above because the site wouldn't let me post the wikipedia link.

This is what happens when  loses all those juicy Google billions. Suddenly  needs to replace that income with ads! They are shooting themselves in the foot regarding the argument as to why they don’t want to make a search engine. The whole thing makes me feel sick. 🤮🤮🤮
Do you really think if Apple made a search engine there wouldn’t be ads?…

The Apple TV already shows third-party advertisements in the TV app.
Has for years. Since it was introduced eight years ago.
See what I mean? Advertisements have always been in Apple products, the idea that they haven’t is absurd.

Sheesh, did anyone actually read the article or just the title?

They’re not doing pop ups or anything intrusive. It says that if you search for something vague like “burgers”, companies that pay Apple will be a top hit. Let’s be honest, if you’re searching for something as vague as “burgers”, you obviously don’t know the good spots in that area so does it really matter? C’mon folks lol.

Edit* and another thing, if the companies are paying Apple to be a top hit, more than likely they’re business is doing a good and probably a good spot to eat at.

Or you can go back to Google Maps where you do get pop up ads… SMH

Apple is "exploring" the idea of showing search ads in the Apple Maps app, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Apple-Maps-2024.jpg

Back in 2022, Gurman said software engineering was "already underway" to display ads in the Apple Maps app, but Apple did not move forward with the idea at the time. Today, he said Apple is "giving this notion more thought" again.

This time around, he said Apple has yet to start engineering work, so ads in the Apple Maps app might still be a ways away.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would not be the traditional banner ads that you see on websites, but rather paid search results. For example, a fast food chain could pay Apple to appear near the top of the results when a user searches for "burgers" or "fries." Many similar apps already offer search ads, including Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp.

Apple already displays search ads in the App Store, allowing developers to pay to promote their apps to users who search for relevant keywords.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would further boost Apple's services revenue.

A word for Advertisers, we will purchase your crap they you are selling. We need to eliminate advertising from everywhere, it is a nuisance more than anything.

If they really do this, I'd consider leaving the brand entirely after being a loyal Apple enthusiast for 20+ years. They've already strayed from their mission of making products and services that improve people's lives. Pure greed.
The problem with that is the competition produces nothing but junk. You would have to go back to paper.

One word,

EW!

Google Maps has ads. Waze (owned by Google) has ads. Apple Maps wants to have ads.

I chose Apple and iOS over Google and Android explicitly because I did not want ads. But Apple has a fiduciary responsibility to make more revenue and that means shoveling as many dark patterns and ads as possible to get more revenue without losing customers.

I hate that I am paying full price for things (Phones, TV, Cars, Computers) that then decide to use their platform to show me ads and buy their subscriptions.

Whatever economic model this is, I don’t want to participate in it.
