Apple has been revamping its Maps app over the last few years, with the updated experience providing more detailed coverage of roads and buildings, faster and more accurate navigation, 3D views of landmarks in major cities, and more.

In light of those efforts, Apple recently sent a unique gift to some employees working on the Maps team, according to a LinkedIn post shared on Reddit. The gift package includes some custom Apple Maps pins, stickers, and imagery, along with a small card thanking employees for their contributions to the Maps app.

"Each and every one of you has your fingerprints on Springfield," the card reads, suggesting that "Springfield" might be Apple's internal codename for the revamped Maps experience. "Thank you for all of your distinct contributions to this product and for building on the legacy of great work here at Apple," the card adds.

Apple's revamped Maps experience is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, UK, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.

"The map has been rebuilt from the ground up, with better navigation, richer detail, more accurate information for places, and remarkable features that only Apple can deliver, like Look Around, Share ETA, and more," said Apple's services chief Eddy Cue, when the revamped Maps experienced rolled out to Australia. "Now it is easier than ever for users to find the places they love and get to where they're going."

Not sure how others feel, but apple maps has gotten pretty good where I am. I even had a situation where I was trying to determine an address for work by clicking on the location and apple maps gave the correct address while google maps did not.
I have the rare issue with Maps directing me to turn left on a road where I can only turn right, but that's about it.

Meanwhile the contractors who review and rate the datasets used to improve it continue to get paid way less than minimum wage in the US.

If true, that’s because their cost of living is much less than the cost of living in the US, presumably.

BTW, as someone who used to get gifts like this in Silicon Valley, the universal reaction by employees was “just give me money and keep your tchotchkes.”

Yeah I’m referring to US contractors paid as independent contractors. They currently make around $11. And yeah I agree about the gift in general. I received a craptastic nuts/candy box this year, just give me the $5 ?

I still prefer, and use, Google Maps. I hate Google and what it does, but Apple Maps just isn't that useful to me. For one thing, they recently added a lot of green to AMs in a very lame attempt to show vegetation, but they added way too much and it is in inappropriate places, so much so that you can no longer easily identify parks and recreation areas. Too much clutter, not enough ability to locate things. GMs just works and is readable.

They aren’t just doing that. While they are reviewing the databases and engineering those posters, they’re producing plastic. Toxins into the air. I thought Apple was supposed to become Carbon Neutral by 2030. They aren’t doing much besides using cardboard on the outer parts of the devices.

Woo! This is a nice gift. It’s the little things that matter.
One of Napoleon Bonaparte's methods of leadership. Give gifts as rewards for distinguished service, thus motivating his men to fight harder, be more loyal. "You call these medals and ribbons baubles; well, it is with such baubles that men are led."

These gifts have little monetary value, but have great emotional value. That is motivation for the Map team to do an even better job.

As someone at the foot soldier level, this sort of thing would be enough to motivated me.?
