And it is always somewhat amusing when they announce these new feature and updates to Maps like subway transit is so useful. Add realtime situational awareness features and more people will use Maps.
5.7 million people use the subway system in my city every day. Not everybody's "realtime situational awareness" is the same as yours.

In many rural areas of the SouthWest first responders utilize Google Maps and other GPS apps to locate addresses where there are frequently no house/business numbers or street signs. Accuracy has been fairly adequate and usually spot on but occasionally are off significantly. Problems finding an address are magnified at night when visibility is sorely reduced. There are sophisticated mapping and dispatching services available for departments to get first responders to the correct location but are super expensive leaving poor counties and metro areas without that ability so crews resort to using their smart phones which is superior to using cumbersome and unreadable paper maps.. Just wonder if the updates and accuracy of Apple Maps would improve their reliability..

To clarify, I expected that to be it but when I took the Apple Maps route, I didn't find any significant traffic en route and arrived at the estimated time that was way earlier than Google's.

It seems like you live in Toronto so I can be specific: I was leaving King/Spadina to go somewhere in North York. Google Maps sent me along the Gardiner to the 427 backtracking considerably, then up to the 401 and along that to my destination. Apple Maps sent me up University/Avenue Road all the way to my destination in 3/4 of the time.

People treat Google Maps as perfect. I rarely hear anybody complaining about Google Maps' quirks but when Apple Maps has the slightest imperfection, it's piled up on.

I know that Apple Maps is flawed in certain regions but in Toronto, it works incredibly well so I have little to complain about.

LOL, ok, that's a stupid route google sent you on. Agreed! it's like my GPS on my car. did similar. was in the near same place because, well, downtown :p. and it tried to have me drive all the way up Yonge street... to get to STouffville road, then stouffville road to stouffville township....

it SHOULD have taken me to the gardiner, DVP, 404 .... its like every mapping software I've used over the years has some quirk to it. Glad ot hear Apple maps has improved in our area. I hate driving downtown now. I typically hop on the Go, Though I'm moving in a couple weeks and won't have easy access to the Go. Will need to start driving again if i'm going to go downtown. What a disaster traffic is in the GTA :( and no politician cares to fix it

anyways, Happy Canada Day :D

I would probably use Maps more often if it integrated real time traffic and police information the way Waze has. There is no reason Apple can't add the ability of users to create usernames and update traffic/police/hazards etc the way Waze allows. Until then, I'll continue to use Waze instead of Maps.

And it is always somewhat amusing when they announce these new feature and updates to Maps like subway transit is so useful. Add realtime situational awareness features and more people will use Maps.

Actually, there are very GOOD reasons why they cannot do that currently despite your wish (and mine) that they would. It's because of the way their software is set up. Waze was always designed to be user editable from the beginning. There are a lot of downsides to that which you can see in the UI of the product. Waze is the least "pretty" of all the mapping apps out there for a reason. I know that may not matter to some who just want the data, but I do prefer Apple Maps for this reason alone (and read the whole article on Tech Crunch to see what level of detail Apple is adding...it's amazing).

I also find it surprising with this complaint that no one ever mentions that Google maps doesn't tell you were police are or cars on the side of the road. I know you were just comparing Waze to Apple Maps, but Google Maps also has this "limitation."

It's a Waze feature and the main reason I use Waze when I commute...but I totally understand why Google Maps doesn't utilize those features even though they own Waze.

Great to read Apple is not treating the rest of the world as a second class citizen... oh wait

This quest for perfection is getting annoying. No upgraded maps while we still don’t have the old features like speed signs, public transit or even Maps Nearby in my country, Belgium. Why they haven’t activated Nearby is beyond me because all POI’s are there.

And Search and Siri are still broken. Asked her to navigate to Carrefour, a big supermarket chain. She sent me to Haiti. Unbelievable.

For those of you posting about all of the issues in "my country", can you please state the country? I'm just curious...

Apple Maps has never worked in my area. They are ridiculously behind the competition.

I can’t imagine how far behind they’d be if they’re trying to build their own map database. They haven’t even been able to get all the areas implemented that already exist in the database providers they’re borrowing from.

If they have to build it from scratch, they’ll never get caught up.

I end up using Google. Them and Tom Tom are the only ones that have every road in my area.

If Apple can’t even implement all the Tom Tom maps, then it’ll be forever before their own custom maps are ready.

Good point. Belgium, developed country in West-Europe ;-) Apple gear is expensive here with the 1-1 ratio between dollars and euro.

Still, no Siri on ATV (while all three languages spoken are supported by regular Siri), no Maps Nearby, no Public Transit, no speed signs, no TV app, no Apple News... and no Apple Pay. Luckily I “borrowed” Apple Pay from a neighbouring country and it works fantastic over here as we do have wireless card support in most stores.

That shows a continuing major gap. I can use Google Maps on any device. Apple Maps only on an Apple device. Then there is downloading of map data for out of area and custom/fast data load. There is more than just accuracy.

I’ve submitted a lot of added locations and corrections (like pin on wrong side of building) and they are generallly really good at implementing user changes (I also try to do a good job explaining the change when necessary). Usually happens in a few days.

I hope they can get out of using ONLY Yelp! for POI data. That's a giant hole in their POI data range.

Other than that, I find AM to be just as good as Google for maps. I still keep Google Maps for those times I want to find something or someplace.

Yep 100% AGREE! Yelp might be good in USA but here in Australia and most other countries it’s utterly useless. Even if Apple perfected their maps and navigation routing without the POI data being good it’s useless.

At the moment searching for a business in Apple map’ Yelp POI fails so often that nobody likes to use Apple maps if it can’t find where you intend to go. Google maps works EVERY SINGLE TIME. even if you mispell the words google will find it. Apple will instead show you something completely different in a different continent!!
