Internationally where I don't want to use data, I use Google and download the map area while on wi-fi. You can download a pretty large area. For instance I can get the entire island of Aruba or all of Paris cached on my phone or pad.

I was a huge proponent of Google Maps. I mean what's not to like, great POI database, abundant traffic information etc...

A few weeks ago I started seeing something on my Google Maps app that really took away from the experience of using this app - obnoxious ads right on the maps in the form of big pins and text.

I opted out of "interest-based" ads at www.google.com/settings/ads which AFAIK is the only opt-out option they have, but unfortunately it did nothing to remove the ads on the maps, just changed them to other ads.

It's weird because for the longest time I never saw any ads on maps, until a few weeks ago. So I removed the Google Maps app and I've reverted back to Apple's.

I have since rediscovered what I really like about the Apple Maps app. It's so smooth and fluid compared to Google's and I really like the presentation much better, best of all no ads.

I miss the POIs and traffic info on Google Maps, for some reason where I live there's never any traffic info on Apple Maps but Google has tons. I've now got into the habit of looking up POIs in Safari and either click on address link or copy address into Apple Maps, works accurately every time.

Maybe Google can come to their senses and remove ads from at least the Maps app where screen real estate is valuable and the last thing one needs are pins all over the map for ads. I mean FFS Google's already getting search, traffic and location tracking through the maps app for use in all their other services, they had to throw ads in there too...

Mind taking a screen shot? I don't very often but have been using Google maps most of the day today without any ads popping up.

Sorry, I've deleted GMaps off my phone yesterday. I too never saw any ads for a very long time but they started populating about 2 weeks ago. On the map they have the same shape and size pins (inverted tear drop shape) but they're purple in colour instead of red, with purple text under them with the word 'AD' in each title. To say they were annoying and distracting would be understating it.

Still hopeful that Google reverses stance on it. I'd love to put Google Maps back on my phone, if only for the excellent POI and traffic info.

Probably just an iOS thing huh?

Apple maps gives directions well but it's POI are crap in the DMV. My dentists office shows up with the correct address but the pin is on the other side of town. Been that way for almost a year. And I've sent in problem reports several times. Just one example.

I'm in the DMV area too. I'm used to google maps since using android phones on and off for the past few years. Apple maps has giving me wrong directions plenty of times in the DC area since I got my 5S. Worst thing about ios7 in my opinion.

Put in the actual address instead of using POI. Even if the POI gives the right address, it will direct wrong. I found typing in the same address gives accurate direction with higher success.

Apples Maps is horrible.

Maybe 70% of the time I use it it is wrong, and I live in a major city (Houston).

From locations >100 feet off, to missing streets, or streets not there, and in more than 66% of of the time.

It simply is not safe to use.

This is my typical experience with Apple maps.

Same exact location. I had to use Google yet again just to get me to this location.

Since my last post I decided to run Apple maps and Google Map and actively compare.

In a 15 minute drive I've noticed some pretty big errors on Apple maps. I'm kind of shocked actually. If I wasn't comparing I probably would have hardly noticed but Google was trying to route me onto roads Apple maps doesn't have.

I'm not very familiar with this area so I don't know how new these roads are (don't look new) but I'm north of Baltimore Maryland so it's not like I'm in some strange country that 4 people inhabit.

Apple & Google maps are the most mixed bag of apps I've ever used. Apple Maps is excellent for turn by turn navigations in Wales,UK, especially with voice enabled since it pronounces more things correctly, like motorways & oddly named welsh streets.

But Google maps is far superior for finding a specific place and doing some recon on it using street view. Apple has something similar with the flyover mode but its only available in certain areas.

The one thing that has me leaning toward apple maps now though is that I have it on my macbook. the ability to plot a route on my mac and just send it right to my phone before I go out the door is invaluable.

Swings & roundabouts really.

I find they're both patchy at times here in the UK - Apple maps has surprised me at times by knowing things that Google didn't, but most often it's the other way around.

I much prefer the interface and general style of Apple maps, and for basic directions from one location to another it's absolutely fine, provided you know the *address* of where you're going. Where it falls down (and Google does much better) is actually locating where you want to go. Searching for a business or other POI by name is generally hopeless on Apple maps and will frequently bring up wildly inaccurate results even where it half recognises what you're after.

Like others I've made the effort and reported various errors since Apple maps first appeared, but with little if any affect. I really don't get the feeling they're paying much attention to the rest of the world outside the US.

+1. That's exactly the experience in Scotland. Apple Maps if you need directions, Google Maps if you need to find a POI.

Is this even a question? Apple Maps are the worst maps I have ever used... even to the point to where my girlfriend (the fangirl if you will) won't even take her iPhone out for directions.

Why shouldn't it be a question? There is people who have great experience with Apple maps (including myself) So yes, the question makes perfect sense.

----------

80%?, doubt it.

This is the thing with people....

Apple Maps are still missing a lot of location data. I usually search for places in Google Maps and then switchover to Apple Maps and type in the address for Navigation as I prefer Apple's turn-by-turn interface over Google. So pretty much it's Apple for directions if you already know where you want to go. Google for POIs.

Overall Google is still better. Especially when it comes to new roads. Google Maps even shows the newly constructed and modified roads from the major construction going on north of town while Apple Maps still shows the roads the way they looked a year ago.

Apple Maps, Google Maps in the same area. Apple Map is outdated.

I've never had a problem with Apple Maps. I do, however, have a problem with a company that discontinues popular services (Google Reader anyone?).. it makes you wonder when your favorite Google service will bite the dust.

Just my $0.02

You must have a lot of problems with pretty much every company even Apple for discontinuing services.

However instead of going down that roads let's try NOT to change the topic. MAPS! Lol

I think some people are confusing some things here. Neither Apple nor Google create the images you see inside these apps. The data has to get updated by outside sources and then accessed by each app maker, both Apple and Google. I've always had good luck using Apple's Maps, as well as Google Maps. I prefer the look and sound of Apple's and it's integration with OS X.

Here's my neighborhood in each app:
