So this completely makes Phil look like a pretentious idiot. I hope someone has retweeted his pluralised tweets back to him.

They have (I did). I think I was wrong to do this. Phil has since favored a reply saying that you can plurarilize their products. (Or at least that's how I read it.)

When a company's exec has to get on twitter how to pluralise its product names ... that company might be running out of interesting things to say!

Don't worry; I'm sure the Ministry of Truth will sort that out in a jiffy.

We have iPhone devices. We have always had iPhone devices.

Ah ha! You've just committed a Thought Crime (Thoughts Crime? Thought Crimes? Crimes Thinks?) Anyway, we've all just gone onto the list.

I sometimes engage in grammatical fascism, but it always makes one nervous, as there are many rules of grammar one might break.

/Just typing that made me nervous.

Slow news day...
It must be a real slow news day.
Slow news day? Sheesh.
Certainly seems to have people's interest given how much discussion has been going on in this thread in a fairly short period of time.

Schiller just offered a spontaneous, wee input on a discussion between two Twitterers. He did not say ‘this is how you should say it’, he said (in my own words): you don’t have to try pluralising a word, when you can just add a descriptive common noun as a plural instead. How anyone can read more into this is beyond me.

Apple executive Phil Schiller gave Apple users a grammar lesson on Twitter yesterday afternoon, explaining that it isn't necessary to pluralize Apple product names.

Schiller's instructions came after a discussion on pluralizing "iPad Pro" between Andreessen Horowitz partner Benedict Evans and iMore analyst Michael Gartenberg. Evans referred to more than one iPad Pro as "iPads Pro," while Gartenberg said "iPad Pros."

Schiller clarified that neither approach was correct. The proper way to refer to more than one iPad Pro is to call them "iPad Pro devices."

He went on to further state that it would be correct to say "I have 3 Macintosh," or "I have 4 Macintosh computers" when referring to more than one Mac. "Words can be both singular and plural, such as deer and clothes," he explained. By that logic, more than one iPhone would need to be referred to as iPhone devices or iPhone models rather than "iPhones."

As Business Insider points out, Apple sometimes breaks its own naming rules. In press releases, the company has made mention of "iPhones" in the plural form.

Wow, really? This makes me think Apple is starting to lose it.

I would go further than many here and say that Phil is actually incorrect in suggesting that you can use the term iPhone "devices" when talking about more than one iPhone. By saying iPhone devices, you are effectively de-valuing what the iPhone is - that's it's just a device.

And if you're trying to describe the two different iPad Pro versions / sizes, it is only important if you are differentiating between the versions / sizes in context of the conversation or sentence, such as "I have one 9.7" iPad Pro and two 12.9" iPad Pros on my desk right now.". Otherwise, saying "I have two iPhones and 3 iPad Pros on my desk right now." is absolutely the acceptable way to describe multiple iPhones, iPads, rMBPs, iMacs, etc.

Poor Phil, was it so hard to see the backlash coming for uttering such a ridiculously pointless brand statement?

Just when I thought Apple couldn't get any douchier.

Still love your products though :) Ya douches...

This story is entirely a concoction of bad reporting -- Schiller didn't tell anyone (certainly not "users," as this article said) how to refer to Apple's products. In fact, what he said implies that there are correct ways other than his. This is a stupid, stupid article, in no small part because the original version contained a purported quote that not only was not an accurate quote, but it actually contradicted what he did say.

Awe man Apple had some really bad news this week ! Time for them to "leak" some news to get folks excited again !!!

"Don't pluralize the word iPad"

..... uhhhhh .......... release balloon making weezing noise as it awkwardly flies around the room .....
