I don't get the beef people have with Android having an Instagram app as well. How does it affect your life if somebody on a different phone can shoot and share images as well?

T.

I don't think Phil knows what "jumped the shark" means.
Actually I just read the definition of "Jump the shark" on Wikipedia and his use of the term and his explanation are both very accurate. At least from his point of view. I also wouldn't say his opinion is petty. He was asked directly by someone why he stopped using Instagram and he told them. The sadder thing would be for high level execs to not share an opinion at all.

Simply ridiculous comment...

That's as saying "Yeah, I really loved apple when it was a small community and not many ppl were using macs"...

Funny enough, I was going to post something similar:

Macrumors is a great site and community. That hasn't changed.

But one of the things I really liked about Macrumors was that it was a small community of Macintosh afficiandos sharing their love of Apple's computers both old and new.

Now that it has [grown] much larger with iDevices the signal to noise ratio is different.

That isn't necessarily good or bad, it's just not what I originally had fun with.

I think the problem he's talking about here, if we should still stick to photography communities, is the "Flickr Problem". And why 500px is having a different kind of quality today.

Just because more people are using Macs or Windows or iOS or Android doesn't change anything, but the content posted to an app like this changes as the barriers of entry become lower, regardless how elitist that may sound.

An article dealing with this effect is this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September

Why so much talk about som BS app with preset effects? What's so cool about it? Did people just figure out Photoshop plug-ins from 10 years ago? And there is absolutely nothing cool about overdone photos, not a one thing.

And then you have FB who cashed out $1B for that carp. Amazing world we live in!

I can understand to a degree. It does start to get a bit boring when all the pictures people post on Facebook are instagram ones which mostly all look the same.

I'm not sure calling him childish is really fair.

He deleted his account, for his own reasons, but didn't say he had. Then when he was asked he replied honestly. He didn't speak on behalf of apple, he didn't claim his opinion was fact - he just answered a question honestly. Isn't that what we want?

I don't blame him. Instagram is trash now. All I see is pictures of people's food and shoes all day.

Lol you must not have been on IG long cause that's all it's ever been well and cats too. There is just more of it now,way more of it.

What led me to delete my account (before it even went to android) was the constant spamming like he please follow me or please like my photos..

The comments were endless and once one of my photos went popular it got 50 times worse,so bad even IG tried to throttle the spamming by deleting comments if they were nothing more than a hey please follow me.

For the more serious photographer, Instagram was and is great for one thing: getting your photos visible and potentially getting people to click on your profile where they may be able to view a link to a more professional website. Make no mistake about it, the number of garbage photos on the app has exploded, and the user base seems to be made up of mostly 15 year old boys and girls begging for their 8 photos to be liked in return for them liking yours back, and advertisements for countless other garbage. If you can sift through all of that, it has a use even for the serious photographer.

I don't understand the "please rate and follow" crowd. Looks like a bunch of nolifers.

apple jumped the shark after iphone launch.

Because they actually think different. You know, not like the iPhone crowd.

So no one really gets what he's saying then? Before, you could browse Instagram for hours on end, basically only seeing awesome posts. More members means more crap, more crap means it takes more energy to find the good stuff, and he feels it's not worth it anymore.

Compare it with having a favourite bar where a lot of people that you find interesting are hanging out, you can sit down and join in in conversations from time to time. All of a sudden, the bar becomes more popular and you can't find a place to sit, the new crowd is more interested in getting drunk with their friends than open to talking to others...

Comparing it to not liking Apple anymore because of their increased catalogue of products is just showing you're not getting it.

Perfectly, but ironically apt description of how MacRumors itself has changed over the last 12 years. And as for Phil Schiller, shallow pettiness in marketing people is par for the course.

Oh boo-hoo. They're just out to make money like you, Phil.

Just make a better device and don't worry about the rest. You're already doing a great job. Keep it up!

Note: I'm not an Instagram user. "Oh look ugly filters on square photos...awesome. I'm such a good photographer now!"

My first reaction was just exactly that, "Boo hoo."

Sounds just a tiny bit pretentious and elitist to me. It's a social network for pictures. The more people it has, the better, right?

He quite plainly said "I liked it before it was cool, now it's full of filthy android users."

Apple, that is NOT the way to get people to want to switch from a competitor's product to your own!

It always amazes me how many android users and fans hang out on a forum dedicated to mac rumors. I'd say the vast majority of vocal posters here are here to troll lol.

edit: people already explained it ;)

anyway, that term is getting soooo overused its annoying and doesnt even make any sense in most cases

This is the first time I have heard it. Must be an American thing.
I’m from Canada.
