"jumped the shark"
really cant agree more..

instagram is a big mess now, really, totally hating it now
the pop page is full of nails, girls, shoes and no arty photos

Apple is turning into a bitter, snarky company right in front of our eyes. New products? Nah, we'll just complain about losing a monopoly on low-quality hipster photos in the mobile arena.

best comment on the thread, and pretty high up for best comment in macrumors over the past few years.

Seconded! They weren't so arrogant, ignorant and abusive prior to the mobile focus that netted them so much success that they could clearly not deal with it humbly!

Not sure I understand this one.

Perhaps he meant to say that it was cool when it was a small group of dedicated photographers, but now it's grown so large that all you see is random meaningless stuff?

Dunno. If so, he should have said that. This just looks weird, petty, and un-Apple-like.

Kind of out-of-character.

You're joking, right? Did you not notice the weirdness and pettiness of Steve Jobs when he was alive, which set the tone for Apple? Apple has always been weird and petty. It flows through every single thing they do. It's only started to move away from that under Tim Cook's leadership, and I say, thank God.

Thank you Phil for showing yet again why Apple fans are though of as clueless snobs.
If it didn't jump the shark when it went to Android, it sure as hell did when Facebook bought it.
very true. Going android was a long over due move. going facebook on the other hand is another story.

I can not agree more.

Funny

Although it's probably a petty move to delete the account, it at least shows some passion!

Yeah, Steve said stuff all the time. That's exactly the point, he said it and everyone else kept their heads down.

When was the last time Phil said something like this? If there's all sorts of 'Phil being a jerk' quotes out there that I missed, clue me in.

I think Apple jumped the shark when they allowed instagram on the app store.

Hopefully this is just something Schiller thinks and not something that the majority of Apple employees are thinking - because if it is, it paints a really bad picture of them as a company IMHO.

This is the real suck. An individual with a personal opinion makes a comment and the blogs etc use it as hit fodder and it comes off like it was an official company statement

From now on when someone does something so childish, petty and immature that is gives you douche chills we can refer that as "being a Schiller".

Good for you, Phil

I, too, deleted my account that same day. It offends my senses to have the no-taste Android rabble pour in.

A representative of a company (eh-hem, a VP representative) making a statement is an extension of the company.

If I post something related to my work on Facebook, it's discoverable in a legal sense.

What he said, while it may have been his personal view, is from Apple plain and simple. Just the way it is. Don't wan't a public reaction? Keep it to yourself. It's the only way.

Oops. Shouldn't have said that about Win8. See how it spins out of control?

If anyone jumped the shark it was FB with its purchase of Instagram. The launch on Android is just normal business (some apps even get launched first on Android!).

To say Instagram "Jumped the Shark" means it was losing quality while an IOS exclusive, does it not? So the developers thought to improve their user base to go to a much larger demographic.

I never thought iPhone elitist could be so selfish.

Young spoiled teenage girls =/= Better photographers
Money minded people =/= Poorer photographers

Well, we are in a world that we cannot say anything bad about Android otherwise we are loyal Apple fanboys. ;) It's a like a political debate now. So it's better to keep quiet about that, esp. on the internet. :D

If anything Apple jumped the shark when they became a mobile focused company.

God this idiom causes me so many problems...

With the above quote, can someone explain to me the severity of that expression?

Is it the equivalent of Michael Dell's famous quote saying he'd shut down Apple?

Did Apple jump the shark before Steve Jobs came back?

Is this another way of saying Apple (in its entirety) is no longer fundamentally competitive or viable for the remainder of its existence?

It seems so much easier to apply the expression to TV shows or film series than to a company. Thanks to whomever can help me get a better grasp.

The day Apple took Computer off of the company name is when they jumped the shark. When they focus more on iOS instead of hardware is when they jumped the shark.

I don't get why Instagram was such a big deal in the first place? As far as I know it just put an ugly filter over your photo and shared it. Aren't there like a thousand other programs and sites that do that too?

I think direct messages are a form of personal communication, and the comment shouldn't have been passed on without permission (which is not to say permission wasn't given)

I understood your original comment in the context of the event you are clearly referring to just not the impact you hope to convey.

To be more blunt, do you mean to say Apple made a wrong choice or Apple is now screwed?
