Siri works fine for music recognition. That's the only times I use Siri. That's why I didn't download Shazam for my iPhone.

lmao Is it 2010 all over again? I think I used this last on my 2010 iPod Touch. It had like, 5 free searches a month, then pay.

Gooogle Assistant has had this for years for free. As simple as hitting the music note icon on the search bar & it listens. Yes, it opens to Google Music to tempt you into buying the song. NOT like Apple will do this for Apple Music, of course! /s

So good is Google Assistant, if I watch TV Acapulco (they have a lot of cover songs w/ Mexican artists) & hold my phone to my TV soundbar, it can somehow decipher a sala twist to a Bublé original. Nice.

Surprised at the positive comments on this one. I’ve always thought Shazam was a joke for an app. I downloaded it years ago when people thought it was kind of neat how accurate it was. I have NEVER needed such a service. If I don’t know a song, 9/10 it isn’t playing at the moment (It’s just stuck in my head).
Regardless of whether it’s in my head or playing on the mall music list, just google a line from the song and you will have it just as fast as opening up the app etc.
IMHO this would be a complete waste of money to have what is truly a gimmick (and people on this site throw that phrase around a lot).
Gimmick: (n) a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business.

Actually Shazam is used to identify a LOT of different music (multiple genres), not just the music that you happen to like or are familiar with.
Not all music has lyrics, not all music are songs.
And not all lyrics can be found using a Google search.

For example, Shazam is used a lot by people who are into EDM because a lot of tunes are difficult to ID. Some of that music can go back 30 years.
Radio stations don't always tell you what song they've played.
A streaming live event won't have the song names announced.
If you're at a live event you can use Shazam to ID what the DJ or artist is playing (if it's a released tune that is).

It's far from being a gimmick.
It's a VERY useful tool that has helped millions of people ID songs and tunes.

And if you don't like Shazam there is always SoundHound. There are options.

This is the single most useful tool for identifying music to purchase. I primarily listen to internet radio stations from around the world and Shazam has been the only method available to me for identifying songs in other languages that I have zero fluency in. Various radio apps have features built in for listing what song is playing but many internet stations do not include that info in their streams.

Fair enough. I Hadn’t thought of that. Obviously the service exists and excels, I’m not trying to bash Shazam. I’m just surprised that so many people are for an Apple acquisition and implementation. If you need the service, download the app. However, I still feel that the “average” user would not benefit from it being integrated, especially for the price suggested in the article.

It’s in a weird place, but if you go to the iTunes Store app, tap More, and then Genius. Then Tap the list icon in the upper right corner and you will find a Siri list of everything it has Shazzamed for you.

Thanks, I didn’t know that. But it should really be in Apple Music. I actually deleted the iTunes Store app. As a Music subscriber with access to unlimited music, why would I need iTunes at all?

If Apple does not scuttle it, reduce the features to make it unrecognizable, or otherwise destroy another great product by putting Apple's unneeded and buggy software mark on it.
If they make the transition the same way as workflow app, I’m not too worried. Apple has done pretty well at maintaining workflow, even adding quite a few ios11 features.

The only reason I could see buying Shazam for is to block competitors from using it. It's relatively simple technology and I don't think Apple would need to shell out $400 million for it when they could probably get a few of their programmers to knock it out in a weekend.

Spotify could probably do the same thing, but the install base of Shazam is so huge and it has so much brand recognition that a lot of people wouldn't want to switch.

Apple had a very good music recommendation system based on music recognition instead of some (random) tags. That is called Genius. I did not use that much but for that few occasions, my experience was spectacularly good. Don’t know why Apple abandons this thing and buy Shazam instead. Kinda a waste of money I think.

Those two things aren't really related - Shazam doesn't specialize in making music recommendations. You're probably thinking of Pandora.

For me, Shazam was once the main reason I bought an iPhone (3GS back in the days). Today Shazam has ceased to be useful in any kind. I can't remember when it correctly recognized a song the last time (mainly listening to EDM and Deep House).

Ah so when I asked Siri to name this tune it is just passing that request to Shazam.

I remember when I first bought my first iPhone (3GS), my boss' kid showed me Shazam. Couldn't believe how well it worked, and how well informed his kid was on this stuff lol. In my defense, I came from a Blackberry Storm  to the 3GS. Before that I was rocking a Razr for nearly 5 years
I remember using Shazam on my blackberry by calling a 5 digit number and being charged £0.50 for the resulting text.

[doublepost=1512822485][/doublepost]Apple doing anything music-related is sheer hypocrisy. They've removed the headphone jacks from their best-selling MUSIC PLAYERS. That's a big FU to anyone who cares about music, and craven stupidity for a company that is staking its future on services like Apple Music.

Apple: not just anti-customer, but anti-everything.
