Those two things aren't really related - Shazam doesn't specialize in making music recommendations. You're probably thinking of Pandora.
But the underlying tech are the same. Genius recognizes the music and recommend based on that. Shazam recognizes the music and find out which one that music is.

Regardless of whether it’s in my head or playing on the mall music list, just google a line from the song and you will have it just as fast as opening up the app etc.

I’ve never been good at typing lines from instrumentals or the closing musical codas from songs I hear in shops/cafes etc into Google search engines. I still find Shazam and Soundhound useful.

Hopefully Apple won't ruin the app. I've always preferred it over Soundhound. It's less cluttered (at least the ad-free version) and it let's me save recognized songs to Spotify or Apple Music playlists without having to create yet another account I don't want.

[doublepost=1512822485][/doublepost]Apple doing anything music-related is sheer hypocrisy. They've removed the headphone jacks from their best-selling MUSIC PLAYERS. That's a big FU to anyone who cares about music, and craven stupidity for a company that is staking its future on services like Apple Music.

Apple: not just anti-customer, but anti-everything.

I think I am starting to see Apple’s thought process. The idea is that you have the iPhone, Airpods and Apple Watch and they all sync wirelessly together. Then at the end of the day, you just throw them onto the AirPower charger and not have to worry about cables or adaptors. It’s probably going to be another few years before we get there though.

It’s not about stupidity and anti consumerism. It’s about having a vision and believing enough in that vision to want to make it a reality, even if it means pissing off users in the short run.

Now that’s the Apple I know.

You really think Apple is going to not remove Spotify compatibility? My guess is Apple would buy it for the underlying tech, kill the app and integrate it directly into the iTunes and Music apps. If this buy goes though I can also see Apple launching iTunes and Apple Music for Android late next year.

Oh please. That is such B.S. Audiophiles have never regarded the iPhone as a reference player and a mere headphone jack was never a sign of a devices sound quality. The end result of deleting the headphone jack was more sound than fury. People liked to bitch and moan -- and I myself was a bit startled. Turned out to really be a big nothing burger as far as inconvenience and sound was unaffected to my tin ears. Initially I used my trusty pair of high end Shure SE5s. I kept the adapter perpetually connected to them. No prob. Most other iPhone users also got by just fine based on sales of the iPhone 7.

Eventually I heard the Siren's call of wireless and bought a pair of Jaybird F5 and then AirPods. Both great for different reasons. For portable music I'll never go back to wired buds even if they are a touch better sounding. Wireless is pretty good now and damn convenient, even if it is another device to charge up. Very much looking forward to Apple's coming AirPower pad. That will supremely increase the convenience.

Surprised at the positive comments on this one. I’ve always thought Shazam was a joke for an app. I downloaded it years ago when people thought it was kind of neat how accurate it was. I have NEVER needed such a service. If I don’t know a song, 9/10 it isn’t playing at the moment (It’s just stuck in my head).

Regardless of whether it’s in my head or playing on the mall music list, just google a line from the song and you will have it just as fast as opening up the app etc.

IMHO this would be a complete waste of money to have what is truly a gimmick (and people on this site throw that phrase around a lot).

Gimmick: (n) a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business.

Umm saying “what song is playing” is much easier than your convoluted lyrics search. Shazam is actually extremly good at what it does and it is already built into iOS.

lmao Is it 2010 all over again? I think I used this last on my 2010 iPod Touch. It had like, 5 free searches a month, then pay.

Gooogle Assistant has had this for years for free. As simple as hitting the music note icon on the search bar & it listens. Yes, it opens to Google Music to tempt you into buying the song. NOT like Apple will do this for Apple Music, of course! /s

So good is Google Assistant, if I watch TV Acapulco (they have a lot of cover songs w/ Mexican artists) & hold my phone to my TV soundbar, it can somehow decipher a sala twist to a Bublé original. Nice.

You are taking complete nonsense. Shazam never worked like you described.

Apple may be planning to acquire music recognition service Shazam, reports TechCrunch, which would be one of the most high-profile acquisitions Apple has made since it purchased Beats in 2014.

Shazam is a well-known music service that uses machine learning techniques to identify short audio clips from songs, television shows, and more. Shazam operates a standalone app for iOS, macOS, and watchOS, but also has a close relationship with Apple.

shazam-800x450.jpg

Since iOS 8, Shazam has been integrated into Siri, and it's what powers the feature that lets Siri identify songs that are playing aloud. If, for example, there's a specific song on television and you ask Siri "What song is this?" Siri uses Shazam to identify it.

Shazam is integrated with Apple Music, and Apple Music subscribers who Shazam a song can then tap to play it directly in Apple Music and can add it to a Shazam playlist. Shazam also has an augmented reality feature that allows you to find content based on pictures captured with the Shazam app.

One of TechCrunch's sources said the deal could be worth nine figures, while another says Apple may shell out somewhere around $401 million. Both numbers are lower than the $1.02 billion valuation Shazam received during its last funding round in 2015.

Apple and Shazam could sign a deal as soon as this week, with an announcement planned for Monday.

Just do it already...

If this is anything like Apple’s previous purchases, they’ll buy it and kill it. Shake, HopStop, Beddit etc. this is terrible news if you like Shazam.

Siri/Shazam doesn't work the way you describe. You don't open an app. You simply ask Siri what song is playing and voila, Siri tells you and gives you option to add to favorites, purchase, etc. Your way is slow and cumbersome and innaccurate (lots of songs have similar lines) and something we had to do a decade ago. That's like going to the local TV station website to check on what the weather forecast is when all you have to do is ask Siri what the weather forecast is. You're missing out on a lot of fantastic iOS tools that will save you time and are a much better experience as they say.

Actually Shazam is used to identify a LOT of different music (multiple genres), not just the music that you happen to like or are familiar with.
Not all music has lyrics, not all music are songs.
And not all lyrics can be found using a Google search.

For example, Shazam is used a lot by people who are into EDM because a lot of tunes are difficult to ID. Some of that music can go back 30 years.
Radio stations don't always tell you what song they've played.
A streaming live event won't have the song names announced.
If you're at a live event you can use Shazam to ID what the DJ or artist is playing (if it's a released tune that is).

It's far from being a gimmick.
It's a VERY useful tool that has helped millions of people ID songs and tunes.

And if you don't like Shazam there is always SoundHound. There are options.

I agree, Illumi. I use Shazam while listening to jazz radio, and of course many of the tunes they play are instrumentals--no lyrics. Sometimes I may recognize the tune but not the particular rendition or artist--Shazam almost always knows. The jazz station I usually listen to does have a playlist, but it's not always current, so sometimes you have to wait until they catch up with their postings to learn what tune they played--with Shazam it's nearly instantaneous, and I can buy it (or even buy the whole dang album!) before the tune is even done playing; if I have to wait for the station's playlist to update, I sometimes get distracted by subsequent tunes being played and forget to check for the one I originally liked.

Also, I frequent a bar which has a terrific juke box, and folks regularly Shazam the tunes being played. Sure, the juke box displays the song number and you can always go up to the box and page through the CDs to find out what song it is, who the artist is, and then write it down in Notes or whatever and hopefully remember to refer back to Notes later on, etc. etc., but Shazam does all that for you and even provides the option of buying the tune . . . from the comfort of your bar stool, beer in hand.

Shazam IS a very useful app--not a gimmick--and to me it makes perfect sense for a digital music store to have an "ID and purchase" feature fully integrated with its inventory.

So annoyed, they should’ve sold Rare to Nintendo...
I blame Nintendo. From what I have read, Nintendo was offered Rare prior to the MS acquisition, and Nintendo declined.

Either way, the world lost a great video game company.

If they make the transition the same way as workflow app, I’m not too worried. Apple has done pretty well at maintaining workflow, even adding quite a few ios11 features.

I'm guessing we'll see an OS-integrated Workflow by iOS 12 and 13, and that's when we can judge how many former features remain.

(I'm also guessing/hoping, we'll see a macOS Workflow, replacing Automator, by 10.15 or 10.16, i.e. a year or two after iOS. It probably won't have feature parity with Automator at first.)

Because apparently, headphone jacks are literally the only way to connect headphones to an iPhone?

If Apple does do this, they will destroy what is a great service of Shazam... Apple would limit it and the better technique would go to ** because they would be using the same method AM users to match which is no where near as good as Shazam of matching.

It is if you have Bluetooth disabled. :)

I don't see it ending up like the Workflow purchase when they could be integrating it into the Android Apple Music app and then extend the support in Siri. They don't need the YouTube links and lyrics when AM already has them in the subscription.

I am not an app freak, my hobbie is to delete apps. Shazam may be the only app I use beside the GPS.

I think it would be smart of Apple to copy Googles always on Song identification feature that's on the Pixel 2. I heard googles version has thousands of song titles preloaded onto the phones memory. Maybe apple can use Shazam to offer something similar.

It might be for their tech that can allow Siri to identify speech and other phrases better to better understand what people are asking if Shazzam can identify music and TV shows better than other services

Good insight, and Siri does need some help
