Isn't the concept of a "high-end" Mac Mini missing the point of the device? It was always supposed to the the cheapest way into the Mac ecosystem (remember Steve Jobs saying "BYOKMAM", Bring Your Own Keyboard Mouse And Monitor)?

Steve Jobs is dead....

The 2012 high end quad-core Mac mini was heavily used in the professional music scene. I'm hoping this new Mac mini will be a reality because I'm tired of using iMacs and MacBook Pros on shows.

I'd like a 5K 27" Thunderbolt 3 display for $999. An 8K will definitely be out of my price range. I'm rocking a hackintosh right now for my "mac mini" after my 2012 died and Apple gimped the 2014 models. The thought of an updated Mac Mini would of excited me 3 years ago but the micro pc field has exploded in that time. I rather pick up an Intel NUC that has upgrade and repair potential than a Mac Mini where everything is either soddered on or requires what amounts to open heart surgery to get to.

What kind of bandwidth would 8k at a decent frame rate require? Is Displayport 1.3 up to the task?

Yes. DisplayPort 1.3 can handle 8K at 60Hz off of one cable. But Thunderbolt 3 only supports DisplayPort 1.2, which doesn't have enough bandwidth to handle 8K. So we might be going the MST route.

Why is Apple all of a sudden teasing everyone with stuff thats years down the PIPE.. They are not trowing disgruntled MacOS users a bone, they are throwing us an old used dog bowl with dried up dog food, and asking us to take a drink of water out of it.

This is all YEARS down the road, and in the computer world, thats forever.

Because major "pro" production purchasers make budget for purchasing often a year ahead of when they actually buy stuff.... It is these people and disgruntled yet vested parties they want to give hope too.... another year of silence would be a nail in the coffin for many that are on the edge.

I honestly won't believe Apple until they show us something.. Our company has 20x 5,1 MacPro's crippling along and a few Trash Cans, and we will buy 10x MacPros at a time, if Apple releases a decent one. No one here is counting any chickens based on Apple's history of screwing the pro user, as well as these somewhat vague product descriptions.. Also Apple always releases a product and its specs months before you can actually put one into production.

And this is why I have hope with this announcement. I don't think they are stupid enough to push the envelope at this point and risk their "modular" mac pro landing with another thud by the same people. They can be deaf at times, but the fact that they opened the process a little gives me an indication that they finally realize it .... and are not planning to cede that market [up until now I had an inkling that they were ceding a certain portion of the pro market purposely] (not that I am going to be a "modular" mac pro buyer -- but I like having the option). I expect they will swing the other way this time and will have very high performance options, though I don't expect them to have "hard drive bays" (I expect just U.2 SSD bays) -- with the expectation that hard drive sized storage would still be an external SAN/DAS type array. The older Mac Pro (cheese grater) had upgrade options for video, but other than that it was not that expandable (after two video cards -- you had one lame PCIe slot left that had lesser bandwidth).... It would be nice (at the high end) had dual Xeon and if they had enough room for 2 video cards (minimum) and another couple full PCIe 3 slots, along with thunderbolt 3, wired ethernet (10GB), etc.

That is, without a doubt, very very optimistic.

What can people do with 8K display? Is it better to have two 4K displays? Will everything be too small to see?

It is only too small to see if you have bad developers.... laser printers (common) went from 300 x 300 -> 600 x 600 -> 1200 x 1200 and some 2400 x 2400.... yet the fonts stayed the same size miraculously  just a bit more quality.

8K 0n your desktop is a solution in search of a problem.
I have heard the same argument for memory densities, hard drive densities, video resolutions (when it was UVGA) etc. New technology gets introduced, comes down in price for the rest of us, then new technology comes in and it comes down in price for the rest of us.... cheer ... don't sneer

Maybe they actually want the Desktop market back all of a sudden, seems like they just figured it out last week with the 2 year wait for new products.

Looks like stock valuation isn't directly related to foresight.

None of those arguments are cogent.

Look at the real world images of a 4K and an 8K 32" monitor side by side, and tell me there's a startling difference. I don't want something bigger than that on my desk. It's diminishing returns.

I'm more interested in accurate color than more pixels. That has never been Apple's monitor approach.

Personally I prefer to hear details rather than endless "we have exciting stuff in our pipeline which we can't wait to show you approximately never". Even if those details include "not this year", it's still much better. We still don't know how long the pipeline is, but at least we know two of the things clogging it are a new Mac Pro and new iMacs.

So you have looked at 4K and 8K 32" monitors side by side? Which ones?

Yes, I am aware that things like HDR and colour gamit have more of a upside for video and images -- but then I am not going to turn up my nose at the curve and display of fonts and things like that being clearer -- even a small bit. If it has no effect then there would have been no need for laser printers at higher resolutions the old 300dpi printer we could have stopped at....

As each new improvement in technology comes out the less one drops in price.... and if 8K becomes more common 4K naturally drops in price....

So, it sounds like Apple is going to backpedal on several fronts...

I'll believe it when I see it.

Had ENOUGH of Apple's "Awesome Pipeline" vaporware.

I really don't need some super fantastic ultra high def monitor that is any better than what they have had for a couple of years. I need a super fantastic better spec'ed out computer.

I can't for the life of me understand why Apple chose to go with a 3rd party (LG) for its monitor.

The monitor is the center piece of the work environment. Your window to the world and your interaction. It is the most artistic piece of your computer. To have some 3rd party, black plastic, incongruently designed, and clashing product hooked up to a Mac Pro or Mac Mini seemed so very un-Apple to me.

Of any company out there that could put together and design a gorgeous top end monitor, Apple would be it. They just have to choose to do so.

Apple is the same company that designed a monitor that isn't height-adjustable. I'm sitting in front of one (Apple TB display), and I'm not a fan of it (wasn't my choice, work-issued). Loses more points for being glossy. 3rd parties do it better from what I've seen with the last 2 Apple displays. Apple's TB display design is terrible (I personally hate the look of the glossy glass and it's border that I stare at all day), though maybe they can correct in the next display.

I have a Dell U3011 at home that I love and it's design and features beat the Apple TB display easily, though I paid almost twice the price of an Apple TB display for that. You get what you pay for...

Apple's Thunderbolt hub in the TB display don't even work correctly and are missing essentials (e.g. audio), so I still plug a lot of things directly into my laptop (wish I had a 3rd party hub).

What we need is a $500 Mac Mini that comes with an SSD.

That also supports 5k at 60Hz and 4k at 120Hz!!!
[doublepost=1491600109][/doublepost]I'm ready to sell my cMP 5,1 for a beefed up TB3/4k120Hz/SSD Mac Mini -- please Tim make this happen
