And that is a very good thing. Phablets are good for no one.

...unless you want a device for mobile email, web and maps, with a screen big enough to read non-mobile websites or read ebooks with a decent font size, but still small enough to fit into most shirt or jacket pockets, and to use as a phone or camera without looking too much like Dom Joly. They're great for GPS, too.

If your priority is phone & text (or you wear skinny jeans and a tight t-shirt) then the iPhone form factor makes sense. If your priority is mobile internet, phablets make sense.

Samsung seem to be selling the odd S4 and Note, so it can't be that bad an idea.

Imagine if you have a desk job and must use the filing cabinet. OH NO THE HORRORS! THE FILES ARE BIGGER THEN AN IPAD!!!

Yeah, but they're not necessarily as dense as an iPad, and if they are you don't need to hold them in one hand to leave the other one free to operate them (unless you're one of those people who wouldn't be able to read if you lost your index finger).

Its holding a tablet by one end, in one hand, for hours that puts strain on your hand and wrist. Even if you could make the iPad bigger without making it heavier, you'd move the centre of mass further away from your hand, and thus increase the torque. In practice, I'd expect a larger iPad to be heavier - mainly through needing a big battery.

I think there would be niches for a large iPad, but you'd probably want to use it at a desk.

Seems absolutely pointless to me. The point of the Ipad is portability and being able to carry it around. That's why the iPad mini is so popular. They would need to at least add USB to it

One point of the iPad and iPad mini is portability. Another point is to allow the use of apps that benefit from touch interaction. The MacBook Air (especially the 11" model) is just as portable, but the MBA and iPad serve different purposes beyond their portability. A 13" iPad would be slightly less portable than the current iPads, but not that much, if you consider a 13" MBA to be a portable device.

It will be called the iPad Pro. No if's or but's --- that will be the name.

You beat me to it. :)

My take is this larger iPad is exactly 8.5" x 11" matching the most common size of printer paper. That will be a massive hit since it's a size many are used to using.

Taking the frame border into consideration, that would put the screen diagonal right around 13" as been rumored. Make it a retina display, and you have nearly same size printer paper replacement.

Thus, you can fit this iPad in every 8.5" x 11" notepad holder already on the market. Outfits like Rhodia, Peil, Custom Executive, Nappa and a ton of others will go crazy marketing a "iPad Max ready" case.

Market? Attorneys, paralegals and other high priced white collar workers will love this. I'm sure the enviable super rugged cases will come out for the factor supervisor, field inspector.

In fact, this may be the original size Steve Jobs wanted for the "paper replacement" computer he's been envisioning since his famous visit to Xerox PARC that sparc'ed the Lisa and Mac.

My guess is that the vertical dimension would be a bit more than 11". That would allow for full-size A4 documents as well as US-letter-size documents, making the device more global.

For musicians I can see a larger sized iPad replacing sheet music or large music notebook on a stand. The current size of the iPad is too small for this type of use. I would welcome a larger size.

This, too!

A bigger iPad, assuming it has a higher resolution than the current iPad, would be better for art apps, maps, music apps – anything where more screen real estate is beneficial.

I don't know if Apple would do it, but a 13" iPad would allow for a virtual keyboard with a conventional layout. As someone who has spent decades using conventional keyboards, I still find the iPad's three-keyboard layout, where you have to switch between keyboards, to be a pain. I understand why it's necessary on the current iPad.

And this probably is too niche-market for 21st-century Apple, but I can dream: How about an iPad Pro Artiste model, with Wacom-style pressure sensitivity? Steve is gone. Might Tim and Jony concede that a stylus is useful for some applications?

If a 13" iPad does come to pass, of course I'd want to see it in person, find out what it does, and condsider its price, but I can see myself potentially shelling out money for yet another Apple product.

So to make sure I have this correctly, there are some that want a GIGANTIC tablet that is neither portable, nor more functional than a device that's almost half the size; yet don't understand how many would find a 5.5" phone useful?

If that's correct then yes, many of you have lost their minds.

Now, my opinion, why not both. But, the market has shown that dumb big tablets don't sell as well as dumb big phones. Either option put in the Apple ecosystem, would cause a lot of fragmentation.

To use SJ's argument when first announcing the iPad and comparing net books and small laptops. "They are not better than anything."

So, I don't see a 13" iPad as being better than anything. It's too big and heavy to be portable, and not enough power to be better than an MBA.

You should know by now that some people will bag on anything Apple isn't doing until Apple does it. It's annoying, but really...there's not much reasoning with people like that anyway.

Though I could see a lot of useful features for a 13" iPad. If Apple were to make it a 16:10 aspect ratio, it'd give you more screen space without being so cumbersome. It'd also be a better size for productivity apps like image, movie, and music editors. If Apple throws in a Wacom digitizer, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Either option put in the Apple ecosystem, would cause a lot of fragmentation.

Honestly, I don't see them making a bigger anything until Apple comes out with an entirely vector based iOS. The only reason I think we got the iPad Mini is because 1024x768/2048x1536 is still just as useable on a 7.9" screen as it is on the iPad's 9.7". They didn't have to adjust anything.

Going to a larger screen as is though would mean smaller icons and UI elements if they up the resolution to maintain "retina" on a 13" display, or larger icons if they just make a bigger 2048x screen. I couldn't imagine Apple doing this.

With vectors, they wouldn't have to support three icon sizes. They could just say "for screen size X, use icons this size, for Y, use that". It's much simpler. Doesn't require nearly as much work to implement.

I wouldn't be so quick to make that assumption if I were you. A overwhelming majority of people who go the gym in my local are as well as work construction have at least a smartphone and a computer. A large number are actually big gamers.

Of course they won't be as into pcs as more tech oriented people, which is why things like the ipad are actually what they'd buy, since it's so simple to use.

Just because some people don't like wimpy girly arms doesn't mean we don't like tech as well.

I was making those assumptions based on the fact that blue collar laborers have a lower average IQ than those in white collar and Apple buyers have been shown to generally have a slightly higher IQ than PC counterparts. Additionally sales numbers show that they don't spend as much on tech devices. They aren't Apple's target audience, which is, the normal tech user.

Strength isn't the issue here. Fatigue still sets in keeping your arms out for long periods of time and makes for a crappy user experience.

Just because some people work at desk most of the day doesn't mean we can't bench +300lbs either.

???

And yet they can't make a larger iPhone....

They not only can but likely are working on a larger screen iPhone. Personally I think these oversized phones are too big, I love everything about my 4" iPhone 5! However, a 13" iPad really would appeal to me.

I've been waiting for Apple to finally consider making a 13-in iPad. This could be a killer product if they provide a USB or MicroSD port. C'mon Apple, give the people what they want!

heh heh, how do you know that it is going to be too heavy? Technology is moving on. If Ipad 5 is lighter as the rumor mill indicate, may be a bigger Ipad can weight somewhere around 1 1/2 pound just like today's Ipad. I would sign up for one if that is the trade off. There are a lot of older folks that can use a bigger Ipad in addition to specialize application that can use a bigger screen tablet (e.g. security monitor system, point of sales, sales presenter etc.).

Within 48 hours ...

Samsung: Hey ginormous suckers, we are also making a 13.9 inch tablet.

I hope to see the Larger Ipad as part of an Hybrid new Air
where the base runs Intel and the detachable Arm.

iPadMaxi in car
