Samsung started the phablet thing... Apple is playing catching up game. What else can Apple come up these days? Going for big then going to small then going to big again? Adding new colour options?

If you think curved edges is pointless, 3D Touch is just pointless. 16GB in 2016 as starting point is just a way for Apple to push people shell out other 100 dollars for 64GB?

I agree with most of this but I like the 3 size options and as long as Apple can forecast the demand there are still only 3 current iphone (yes I know they keep selling the last years model when a new model comes out) but you get what I'm saying. I know lots of people who prefer each of those 3 sizes. Personally I'm not sure I'll ever understand a 5.5+ phone unless you usually carry a bag or purse which I don't

Touch unfortunately was a flop. Nobody wants a thinner phone - they want battery life. If apple tries to just release a thinner iphone - it will destory any credibility they have left as a "change the world company"....which they kept quoting in their weak sauce announcement. The stuff in Mings piece is pretty much what Samsung has now. Why the hell shoudl people dish out $850 one year later if Apple won't innovate?

This does come from a fairly reliable source, so if it's proven to be true between now and September, I would imagine that many people would hold off on upgrading until 2017. I have a 6, and it works well enough that I can't see getting the 7 unless there's a killer feature with it.

You don't realize how important thinness is until you look back. Who wants a 5 inch iPhone with the thickness of a 3GS? yikes.!

Anyone else think it's odd they'd do a major design overhaul in time for the 7S, but not for the 7?

I know they might not have it 'ready' but come on, this is Apple. Reality Distortion Field represent 2016.

It was inevitable that someday Apple would disrupt the s-cycle if conditions were right. Rumors keep pointing to a minor cosmetic change with the next iPhone, definitely not a design that could last until 2018.

I get the OLED part, but what is the benefit/ purpose of a "curved" screen? Maybe because I haven't owned a device with a curved display, I can't imagine what such a screen could do for me.

Possible benefits of a curved phone (depending on how it's curved):
- more ergonomic to hold
- thumb can reach across the screen more easily when using phone one-handed
- contours to your leg so it fits more easily in your pocket
- I believe I heard inward curved screens have less light reflection

So I guess the iPhone's 4 and 4S design was ahead of its time and Apple is trying to bring it back.

So it's the iPhone 6ss this year? Disappointing.

Still prefer the 5 series design to the 4 (and the 6 in all honesty). I really think Apple should be looking forward, not rehashing a design from 2010 but I'll reserve judgement until its revealed.

I suppose they're not averse to recycling designs (I mean, a phone being released this week looks the same as one from 2012) and it gets harder to improve things as the product matures, but come on. Adjusting a few plastic lines and making it 1mm thinner? What have Apple designers been doing the past couple of years? I hope this rumoured massive change in 2017 can make up for it...

People want battery life and what good is a super thin phone if apple makes it so thin you have to put a huge case on it to prevent drop damage?

OR, those miracle genius designers could make a slighter thicker phone that doesn't have to be recharged.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the 10th anniversary iPhone had significant design changes from previous models.

It would definitely look better (optics are important to any company, especially Apple) if after Tim and Phil spent a few minutes reminiscing about 10 years of the iPhone, they had more to offer the world than a one-year-old iPhone design, one that looked like a slightly modified 6/6s when it was introduced in 2016.

People seem to forget how similar the first 3 and second 4 iPhones were

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS

iPhone 4
iPhone 4s
iPhone 5
iPhone 5s

iPhone 6
iPhone 6s
...iPhone 7

There's been 3 distinct designs. This isn't as much of a change as people here are acting like it is

The 4 and 5 series phones were more different than you're letting on. Different size, different shape, different materials, different connectors.

If Apple doesn't update the phone this yea the press will have a field day claiming they lost all innovation. Which might be somewhat true, but any products update cycle will slow down as it mature's its only natural. Lets hope WWDC blows us all away with the software if the hardware won't be updated that much this year.

Honestly the hardware is fine for the most part but an Amoled screen would have been nice and should have been in the 6S as a real reason to upgrade. For all those who have only used iphones trust me amoled is superior. Black levels and contrast are what displays are all about.

The software needs to be less rigid. You want to win over Android users let people customize. Hell Android has a success marketing campaign about this theme.

Grouping the iPhone models like that definitely puts it into perspective. Continuing the trend:

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS

iPhone 4
iPhone 4s
iPhone 5
iPhone 5s

iPhone 6
iPhone 6s

[no iPhone 7s]

iPhone 8/ME/X

Instead of iPhone 8, Apple may choose

iPhone ME (Medium Edition) and iPhone LE (Large Edition), based on the new iPhone SE or
iPhone X and X Plus (tenth generation iPhone)
