Significantly smaller than the current 5.5 inch?

Shouldn't be hard to do. My 6" Nexus 6 was smaller than the 5.5 inch iPhone. It has too much chin, bezel, and forehead. The home button hinders apple's love of making things smaller. (Oh wait, it's thinner they always push...)

I think LG nailed it with the home, power button on the back. I had an LG, went to the nexus, missed the back button and was excited to be back with an LG again. (Almost went back to an iPhone when they got larger....) If Apple did something similar, it would help with that size. The iPhones are ironically huge for their screen sizes compared to competing phones.

Who needs a better iPhone than a 6s plus I mean what else do we need. Lets see updates that use the full potential of the 6s plus.

For those who like Samsung why be trolls just go away and play on a Samsung web forum.

You do realize those trolls are mostly people who are big gadget lovers who used to love Apple because Apple did everything much better? They just don't have a love affair with blinders on for Apple and notice and appreciate what competitors are doing especially since they are doing some things better than Apple?

It's a macrumors forum. Apple steps there game again said trolls go back to being Apple fans.

I get the OLED part, but what is the benefit/ purpose of a "curved" screen? Maybe because I haven't owned a device with a curved display, I can't imagine what such a screen could do for me.
I believe that Apple would want FLEXIBLE displays to get rid of bezels. If the display wraps around the sides, for example, then it could have blank/black pixels starting at the curved edges.

I couldn't resist to make a quick mock-up about my idea of a totaly black OLED iPhone. Would love to see it blacker than black.

I. must. have. this. iPhone!
Also, maybe lets just cut into the top and bottom bezels and make iPhone great again. :D

On a side note, I was going to upgrade this year in 2016 but now as am seeing the rumour mills actually posting better update/upgrades in 2017/18 and a merely S.S update in 2016 is making me change my mind to keeping my 6 + save some more money + go all out with 17/18 iPhone.

I think 5.8" screens would be wider than 16:9, maybe replacing the home button with a virtual one, so that the physical height and width of the phone wouldn't be bigger than the 6S Plus.

Let's assume he's right.

That would most likely mean a liquidmetal iPhone. And I imagine the home button will be gone in this model too. The only surprise is that they'll go to 5.8".

So this fall the iPhone roughly looks the same but is thinner. Next year we see an enormous redesign.

Keywords "KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo" spotted, started paying attention because this is actually going to happen.

Yeah, whenever I see "KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo", I know there's probably a 75% chance or higher of that particular rumor happening.

Apple discussion "Ok well people want big phones let's do this thing. Oh but how will they reach the top icons with one hand? Got it let's put in a double tap feature to bring them down that seems really cool and innovative but actually is a cumbersome extra step." Guy in the corner. "Couldn't we just not have the icons auto arrange to the top left of the screen and let users put icons where they want?" Apple Exec "Don't be ridiculous that's to simple and makes to much sense. Your fired! Go work for Google!"

Kinda just want them to shrink their bezels, then take the 4.7" to 1080p and the 5.5" to 1440p. Finally stop selling 16GB anything...its outright pathetic at this point.

This makes sense. I'd like some changes to ios as well. Especially in the way of customization. Oh and I do want an Amoled screen and let's throw in wireless charging for kicks.

Normally, I would think to myself that I'm lucky to be able to Jump to the new iPhone every year, but I just have a feeling that this 5.8" iPhone Pro is basically what would have been an iPhone 8 Plus in 2017 rather than in 2018.

It's probably gonna cost $100 more than than the Plus cost now, and since I prefer the 4.7" variant, I'll probably have to wait for the iPhone 8 4.7" to catch-up to this "Pro" version in 2018 :(

Samsung started the phablet thing... Apple is playing catching up game. What else can Apple come up these days? Going for big then going to small then going to big again? Adding new colour options?

If you think curved edges is pointless, 3D Touch is just pointless. 16GB in 2016 as starting point is just a way for Apple to push people shell out other 100 dollars for 64GB?

I would say Dell started the phablet thing with the streak 5 which was a year prior to the first samsung note. The marketing and execution were sub par though. I believe they were ahead of the time.

Anyone who owns a 6/6s and buys a 7 for antenna and a fringe feature like live photos and 3D touch has way more money than brains. If that's all that's new I'll just stick with my 5S or return to the land of Droids. 5S still meets my needs.

To be honest I can see them selling the 2016 phone on wireless charging, high fidelity headphones and some snazzy new camera tech with even grander bump. The 6S camera is nearly identical to the 6 so there are major gains to be had there.

As for the charging, I can see it now ... Since this is 'new Apple' they'll sell you an NFC charging pad that's big enough for your phone, headphones and watch. One will look typically Apple with a rubberised top. Then they'll sell a premium one in Rich Corinthian Leather.

to stay on topic, I recon the 2016 design will be very similar, with updated antennas and no headphone jack, leaving the 2017 one to enjoy a radical redesign.

I'm with you though, I just ordered an SE because my 5 is on its last legs.

Comes 2017 there WON'T be enough screens around.
2018 we still won't see it
APPLE show some respect for the customers that made you. Lets speed up that INNOVATION!!!!

For a second a was like "what's this sexy new phone?" Then realised it was a 4S!

As for a major 2017 redesign, perhaps that's because Apple is shifting to a 3 year cycle for 'major redesigns' and the '7' Is just a cosmetic update of the antenna bands?
Maybe, as we know this year should be the 7 and a new or updated design.

I'm over due for a new iPhone but my 5s is still going strong, that said I'm really tempted by the SE or can I make my 5s hold out for another 18 months?

Completely getting rid of the bezels would actually make the footprint of such a (rumored) 5.8" 2017 AMOLED iPhone very similar or even a tad smaller than the current 6S Plus, but to accomplish that the TouchID would have to be incorporated in or under the screen itself.

It may actually remain the same, if it were a wrap around screen like the Samsung S7 Edge. I hope they shrink the size though!

This clearly indicates Apple has made a judgement error on oled displays. I know they have bought luxvue for mini led displays, I know they started a design research center specialized in displays in the last year, but they obviously started too late and will be " missing" a cycle.
Instead of using their own in-house developed techniques, they have to use a display tech from Samsung /lg that has been here for quite a while now.
And that is the problem.
Apple could make a change to oled this year. But it is all about cost. Not just availability. If you ask Samsung and lg to produce 70 million oled screens before September this year , and you asked them last January or something . They could have delivered.

Apple is all about maintaining margins right now, and since new tech is expensive, we'll have to pay for it.
It is a shame, really...

Apple seems to be on acting on the verge of what is acceptable for iPhone customers, and hope they can keep the customers for another year before a great update. Apple is playing the waiting game, and might loose, big time.

I am just hoping they can make a difference this year by adding higher res screens: 1920x1080 for 4.7 and 2208x1242 for 5.5 inch, with the newest techniques of laminated and less reflective screens, higher color fidelity and true tone, as with the latest iPad Pro .
Slightly smaller bezels and chins.
And an amazing camera, with the fastest Soc and 32gb base.
They could have a chance until 2018 to keep customers before this iPhone is released.
In the meanwhile, they should release a stellar update for the watch, an update for iOS for the iPad and a update for the big iPad Pro , to make it really pro and a high end update for the Apple TV .
