That’s fine if your iPhone happens to be less than a year old. Not so much if you’re sporting an iPhone 6s.

depends who you ask, my friend is quite content with his 6s after a second battery replacement.

New mid range androids coming out with 730 and 730G processors this year, those are comparable to the A9 in the iPhone 6s/SE1 in terms of power

the point being the phone is still capable and fine today, some people may be ready to get a new phone but not everyone with a 6s is

You are making zero sense...why the hell would apple do this when the 11 is selling so well at the current price point.

because according to the article there are TWO iPhone 6.1 models, so I am guessing one is the "regular iPhone" and the other one the "iPhone Pro" which did not exist in this segment up until now.

"Apple may launch its 5G iPhones in two stages, with two 6.1-inch models in the first and another two 6.7- and 5.4-inch devices in the second"

Im soooo sick of these virtue signaling posts. Say that to the people with an iPhone 7 that's barely hanging on. I have an iPhone X that is working fine so I can wait, but some people are excited. Its ok to be excited for something during a pandemic....dang.
I’m ok with any level of excitement for the new phones 🤷‍♂️

But I don’t think the OP is signaling virtue, just like I don’t think you’re signaling immorality, based on how little or how much someone cares about the schedule slip.

I had a dream Pro is $3000, and 5.4" is $500 and Apple web store is Green.

I am amazed at how well the 6s has lasted, it’s a solid phone. A lot of my friends still use them and have no reason to upgrade.
Indeed, the difference from the iPhone 6 to the 6S was massive. I have friends with a 6S and myself have an iPhone X, because the 6 I had before that just wouldn’t budge anymore... things like CarPlay Siri I would ask a question then literally 30+ seconds later it would register the dictation on screen and answer.

iPhone 7 owners have had an opportunity to upgrade their phone every year. They only have themselves to blame if they’re barely hanging on.

If true, it would make sense:

Apple wants to sell the less desirable phones first to pick up that initial hype and excitement from casual consumers who only care that it's a newest phone.

out of the non-pros, that 5.4 is going to have more demand, while the 6.1 will be picked up by casual consumers first just because it's out "now" and it "has a bigger screen".

edit: I tried to make an argument for pros, but it's early and I'm failing.

There is no virtue. There is common sense. If you HAVE to change the phone I assure you the 11 is equally good. There is nothing in 12 that would turn your life around..

Why would it? It's the follow up to the 11 Pro Max so it'll start at $1099
They haven't added multiple monitors to the front facing camera yet. When the back gets 6 cameras and the front has 3, then the new 8" iPhone 14 Pro Mega Max XX will be over $2000

I think the 6.1” will be the better seller in both the regular (vs. the 5.4”) and the pro line (vs. the 6.7). In other words, the 5.4” and the 6.7” will be the 3rd and 4th best sellers, behind the 1st place 6.1” iPhone 12 and the 2nd place iPhone 12 Pro.

So to me the rumor is believable.

I agree the 6.1 will be the sweet spot. Especially if they can keep the overall dimensions to be not that much bigger than the current 5.8.
While the 5.4 will also be attractive to many who prefer smaller iPhones, it may lose out simply because it’s not offered in a Pro version.

For someone in the habit of keeping a device several years, buying an iPhone now just before the release of 5g devices seems like a terrible idea. Ask anyone who tried to keep previous devices after newer generations of mobile communication became prevalent.

Agreed. I'm very keen for the 5.4 but I definitely feel like us '5.4 crew' are part of a vocal minority especially here on MR. Sure it'll sell well, but I think the majority of people upgrading to one of the 12 series will already be quite happily holding an 8plus, X/XS/11, or Pro models and not at all fazed by the bulk of their current handset.

Maybe..but change from 4+ to 5G is not nearly as dramatic like EDGE to 3G. And it will take years before the covarage of 5G will be reasonable. I tend to live in rather small European countries and 5G is really spotty like hell and its gonna be like that till at least 2025. So I am not convinced of the value of 12 over 11 here frankly speaking.

Every year someone says something ridiculous like that, likely because it's deemed to be funny.

And then it never comes to being.
Not trying to be funny, the iPhone 11 Pro Max with 512 gigs of storage is $1449, the new model will have a larger screen and 5G that apparently costs Apple more money to incorporate and if they do a 1tb option it will definitely be close to $2,000

still do not get the point of a 6.1 Pro and none Pro version if they all feature 5G but okay o_O maybe "an excuse" to make the 6.7 even more expensive?
The iPhone range has been "wrong" since the XR/XS generation, with a Pro device being 5.8 inch and a non-pro being 6.1 inch. Now they restore some sanity with the same screen size but different resolutions and materials.
5G will also be different with the 12 supporting one type of 5G and the 12 Pro supporting both types.

It very much depends on the price point of the 5.4 model. I was *really* hoping for a 5.4 pro and I'd be willing to pay Pro Max (my current phone which is WAY too big) prices (or more) for it but I'm insane and niche.

However, with it being dropped in as the bottom line of the "current" line up just above the SE in price it's likely to be the cheapest way to get an iPhone 12 with the 6.1 12 checking in at a slightly higher price point which all but guarantees it will be a runaway success (much like the SE, but with a faster processor, 5G and a wide angle lens).

With this becoming part of the standard line up (validated by booming SE sales) I think we'll see a 2-3 year refresh on SE's going forward (assuming they aren't discontinued) bringing up the budget line and the 5.4 12's and 13's taking the "default" iPhone spot.

A 5.4 Pro, as much as I wanted it, would have been a niche model. A 5.4 12 tho? This will be the standard bearer for "default" iPhone. So we'll have the iPhone 12 (5.4) and iPhone 12 Plus (6.1) along with the Pro models.

But at that time the price of technology will be less.

You are looking at £50 more tops this year for 5G/larger screen

As someone who's been very happy with my iPhone X for 3 years and barely come across a moment when it struggles, I was amazed the other day when Apple loaned me an 8 whilst my X was being repaired (battery swelling).

Considering these two phones ostensibly have the same hardware inside, I COULD NOT BELIEVE the difference in performance between them. The only notable difference I think is that the X has more RAM. The performance improvement this gives is really astounding. I found the 8 really quite unbearable and do not know how those persevering with the 6s, 7 or 8 are not desperate to upgrade.

With the X, I'm feeling like 3 years is quite a long life for a phone. But now with a new battery and screen I'm fairly content to keep it longer. It is – hands down – the best phone I have ever had by a huge margin. It doesn't feel slow. The battery lasts a whole day generally (when it was new and again now it has been replaced) and the camera is great. The UI is way better with the non-home button iPhones. So fluid. I cannot believe how great this phone was and is and how well it has stood the test of time.
