Don't know whether a 12" MacBook will come back. Pricing will be key to its success.
💯 They tried so hard to shove the iPad down our throats as a laptop replacement but it just never got there even with the M1/M2 chips. Not to mention an iPad with a keyboard is bulkier and heavier than the skinny 12" MacBook. And no, an iPad is STILL not a replacement for a real laptop, in any way, shape, or form IMO. Also, fun fact: add a keyboard/trackpad to that iPad and it's HEAVIER than the 12-inch MacBook still!!!
The current MBA is 0.44 in (1.1 cm). That makes it thinner than any previous Air. Even a little thinner than the 12” MacBook. Of course those models had the wedge shape that showed a very thin front edge to trick you into seeing it as thinner. It’s a trick played on your eyes. The M2 Air is more honest about its form and is ultimately thinner. I suppose Apple could make them a little thinner if people wanted less battery life but that would not be a popular tradeoff.I don't get why MBAs are so relatively thick right now considering they don't require massive cooling, or have customizable parts - why not have the old paper-thin enclosure, it sure would make more sense for the MBA with Apple Silicon than it did back then for slow low-voltage Intel chips.
The 13” M2 Air is thinner than any previous Air and lighter than all but the old non-retina Airs of several years ago."Yes" the Air is good...but to me is not an "Air" anymore. I could live with the weight of it (it is kind of like a younger brother of the Pro without the Pro stuff), but really...not an Air by definition.
Can't help you with the matte part, but the diagonals of the current 16" and old 17" are 16.2" and 17.0" respectively, so they've come close to bringing back the latter's screen real estate. They need to bring back the 17" MacBook Pro with an anti-glare display. I would love that.
I used an 11 inch Air and I get where you're coming from, that was quite a strange aspect ratio. Those who think the Air 11” was a good Mac probably never used it. 16:9, no Retina display.
The M2 MBA already sells for $1200. The 12” MacBook was a step up from the MBA in price.A 12” MacBook would not need to be $1300 today. It was more expensive than the fair back in the day because it had the Retina screen. It would likely be cheaper than the 13” M2 Air now. It could replace the M1 Air as the cheap end of the Air line.
Most of the problems with the original were that it was expensive and slow. That doesn’t need to be true anymore.
iPad 10 is not the lowest tier, it’s the iPad 9 with old design. The current Apple will not let any redesign into their entry level product. With that in mind, a 12” MacBook has no place in the current lineup, unless it becomes an actually more premium consumer laptop, replacing the 13” MacBook Pro, above the current MacBook Air.They literally just did with the newest iPad with the horizontal camera layout and slightly bigger casing.
They can reuse the M1 and 12" could still sell.
Agree about price drop, ie it will never happen. And Apple of today will also never sell a laptop cheaper than $999. There will never be an $899 MacBook. So the current lineup is already “optimal” from Apple’s perspective. A 12” MacBook makes no sense. Apple would direct anyone looking for cheaper portables to the iPad.Apple of today rarely drops prices. Even the M1 Air stayed at $999 when the M2 Air was released.
The M1 Air started its life as an Intel model with a Butterfly keyboard. Apple improved the keyboard and switched to its own chips. Can’t see why the same formula can’t be applied to the 12” MacBook they had in production for four years. They have been doing this with the iPhone SE line for awhile now.
Lol $699. Never gonna happen. If they could put the M1 chip in it, and price it around $699, that would sell like hotcakes, imo. But as they say: wish in one hand, and [redacted] in the other…
A 12” PowerBook has the same cpu of 15” and 17” PowerBook.
14/16 MacBook Pro for those that need the beast - M*Pro/Max 16GB-96GB (2023)I'm OK with a 12" form factor, but to call it a MacBook is silly in that there would be little distinction between MacBook Air and this MacBook. Just introduce a 12" (or smaller) MacBook Air with an M1, maybe, if it would reduce the cost (maybe $899). This could be the low-end, lightweight laptop in the ecosystem. Apple should work harder to clean up its product line, IMHO, because the distinctions between products are getting ridiculous.
