In my opinion if they only come out with a 4 inch screen they will loose a LOT of business.
They already have. My friend needed a new phone and bought the Samung 3s. He likes it.
He wanted to buy another iphone but could not wait and did not want to wait for a 4 inch screen.

4"- 4.5" is sufficient 5 Inches is too much. Some of these phone look ridiculous on your hip and are a nightmare in your pocket.

C'mon guys, be reasonable these are still phones. Not tablets, mini tablets etc. You guys are starting to sound like women in the bedroom asking for more inches. Remember, you will eventually have to put this phone up to your head. How would a 5" phone look then?

----------

Oh I intend to upgrade my 4S for the new phone but I do not have blinders on. The rumors have the exact same form factor but they ugly'd it up so they can claim it is revolutionary or some bull.

Here is what's going to happen:

1. An hour of stats and graphs that no one cares about.
2. Oh look the new iPhone.
3. Bloggers cheer as a knee jerk reaction but are like "looks the same but the back is hideous and provides no real purpose other than to change and justify an upgrade".
4. Video of Jony (because he is to ashamed to say it live) explaining the design.
5. Cook spews some more bull stats: 25% thinner, better camera, better mic, faster internals, aluminum back for no reason
6. Keynote ends with some Apple brainwashing and somehow every blog on the inet will praise the new iPhone.

Took the words out of my mouth

Sorry for leaving out "smart". I'd just assume we are all smart phone users so we can shorten it to phone.

But that doesn't change anything about what you said. You suggested that a large screen was foolish because we are discussing a phone. Yes the iPhone and other smartphones make calls, but they are far from just phones, and I would argue that most users enjoy other features more often than they actually make calls. Features that are less enjoyable on a smaller screen many would say. I'm not saying I want a phone with a six inch screen, but it would be nice to have an option to keep using iOS while having a larger screen than the current iPhones offer. Trying to argue that the iPhone screen is perfect because it's simply just a phone is like trying to argue that a MacBook is simply a facebook machine.

People like to be able to choose without ever entering the decision making process. Simply having a second screen size option would shut a lot of people up.

That's your opinion.
It's like those guys with big trucks. I say let them drive them if they want to.
Why not offer people the choice to choose?
If you prefer not to have a 5" phone then don't buy it.
I bought a Samsung Note a few weeks ago and I sold my iPhone 4S.
The screen is perfect for me and what I want to do with it.
I could NEVER go back to a small screen.
Until you've used it yourself, you would never understand it.

You're right it's just like the guys with the big trucks, when people see them everyone thinks the owner must be short or lacking in another department.

I agree the people should have choice, but Apple only makes one phone. As long as that is a fact Apple will make average size phones.

Samsung Note? Are you kidding me? The Note is a novelty phone. Samsung does not take the Note seriously. Samsung's target is to only sell 10 million, iPhone more than doubles that number in a bad sells quarter.

I have tried the Note, and it's silly. Almost as silly as holding my iPad to my head.

Again, that's your opinion.
You have the freedom to choose a phone that works for you and that's fine.
But some of us want more choices and the iphone is not what I want, not anymore. It's 2012 and the competition has caught up and passed the iPhone.
That's why I've left and many more will after the iPhone 5 announcement because it looks like it will be a disappointment.
If Apple ever decides to make a phone with a real big screen, I will be back. But until then, I will be happy with the competition.

That's the same thing people were saying about the 4s... Apple broke records when that phone launched... same thing will happen with the 5. Apple's good at smashing records. They always come thru cause they spend more then 6 months on development

I hope to god that this iPhone does not smash any records and fails to deliver. So that maybe Apple would start innovating once again, due to competition.

I have great expectations for Apple. They didn't radically change anything with the 4S. Hopefully, they'll satisfy us with the next generation iPhone. I don't see why people get so angry and debate what the new iPhone will be called. All I care about is a quality product. The most important thing is it working bug-free, running fluidly and have a good battery life. The extra crappy features can be worked out later with iOS updates. The 4S battery life along side of iOS5 was a great disappointment. I shifted from a 4-5 day charge to a 1-2 day with moderate use from the iPhone 4 to 4S, iOS4 to ioS5. Note, I did turn off the extra location services and stuff.

The taller design would be nice, but not necessarily a thing I need. The current form is rather easy to hold and everything is reachable with one finger. A longer phone but not wider would be sort of weird. The keyboard would be a little bit of an adjustment. The two tone pictures look fairly good. However, I dislike things that aren't symmetrical. The pictures show two different sized speakers/mic, that literally kills me. Otherwise, the design is phenomenal.

I'm looking forward to iOS6 and the mapping. The built in GPS should come in handy. We now have another thing we can throw out. Those GPS charging tons of money for map updates and stuff is ridiculous. Now, we'll have Apple doing these things for 'free'.

The wallet system, I'm not necessarily going to use anytime in the future. This was like the transition from cash->checks->credit cards. I don't quite trust an electronic thing taking my money. There are so many factors that could screw up, such as disturbance in signal, which causes the person to send multiple requests and have duplicate charges. This throws in the factor of a hacker walking around and robbing you. I'll stick to plastic for now.

People consistently say Apple have become less innovative and the designs are crap. Personally, I think they are okay and the new features coming from iOS6 are nice. They still support those people with older devices and aren't out of their 2-year contracts yet. Not everyone can afford a new iPhone each and every year. Remember, no one likes radical changes either. As humans, we have the nature of hating complete changes. Although it may satisfy a small minority of die hard fans, majority of users will hate a complete change. Slowly transiting users is the smartest thing and safest, unless they do a complete different product launch. I'd hate to go from a 3.5" phone to something like the S3 4.8".

Wall of text, haha.

NFC and I am sold instantly, if not I am sold in about 5 minutes ;)

Have a 4s but was wise enough to pick it up on a 12 month contract, so come October the 15th I will be having a new phone.

If all it brings is the 4" screen then I would give it a miss, but no one really expects the keynote to contain;

"we made the screen bigger, goodnight!"

I think if sales break expectations once more, that's proof that despite your criticism of the new iphone, people still like it. And if they do, what reason is there to give it a complete overhaul?

You cannot presume to speak for millions of consumers around the world. :p

iPhone mini

Prediction: the next iPhone will be a mini (as the iPad mini).
If not now, then next release. I hope!

The chain-of-events for an introduction for Retina display was as follows:

iPhone 4
iPod Touch
the new iPad (v.3)
MacBook Pro Retina (15")
MacBook Pro Retina (13") <-- very likely in the near future.
iMac <--- sometime in the future
Cinema Display <--- sometime in the future

Due to demand and the possibility of production and QC along with screen size, you can see that there is no chance that a iMac Retina will be released. Plus hardware limitation being pushed with the MBPr 15" as it is.

This is just the way technology works, small to big as it is cheaper to produce something smaller and work out the bugs when it gets larger as that poses additional issues on it own.

If I was a betting man, I would bet on the 13" MBPr, more likely to happen than an iMac Retina. :)

You are probably right, and I'm not necessarily in the market for a new Mac, as I just purchased a 15" MacBook Pro last year, but I've always wanted an iMac for the larger display, and a redesigned iMac might push me to purchase one. Perhaps just buying a cinema display for my MBP might be a cheaper option though.

I just want them to finally bring the iPhone to T-Mobile. Their network will be ready soon and compatible with the iPhone anyway. It would be a mistake if Apple continued to let Android have an entire carrier to itself.

Until you've used it yourself, you would never understand it.

But as you've proven with your buying the Note, people DO have a choice.
Buy Apple's phone or buy someone else's larger one.
The companies should be fighting for your business and if Apple isn't giving you what you want them move on.
You obviously did.
Others may also but arguing that Apple should do such and such in order to make people happy is ridiculous.
Vote with your wallet.
It's as simple as that.
If Apple sees sales declining then they may reconsider but as long as they have one of the best selling phones they're really not going to be scanning too many blogs looking for design advice.

<snip>I'd hate to go from a 3.5" phone to something like the S3 4.8".[/QUOTE said:
There are a lot of people who feel differently...actually Steve was one of them. You will recall how he decried a tablet smaller than the current one because the icons were too small, etc, etc. Gee, guess what a lot of people have trouble with on the iPhone.

Though I say a lot of people feel differently about the size of the display on the iPhone, I recognize that there are still a number of people who are fixated on small size rather than function. (Hint to Apple: Offer two sizes. You can use the "extra space" in the larger one to put a larger battery in.)

One size does not fit all in this instance.

Cheers

Who offers 12 month contracts? (All "the bigs" in my area are into 24 month contracts.)

My iPhone 4 is holding up well. At this point, the only reason to upgrade would be LTE, and that won't be standard in the UK for at least a year, and probably more likely, two. I think I'll try and last it out with my current phone.

Too much heft? I don't know about you, but I want my phone to be light but feel solid - Exactly like the iPhone 4/4s. The Galaxay SIII feels cheap when you hold it, IMO.

Rhetorical much? Of course you know my position b/c you responded to my post. Don't be so dramatic, but if that's how you like it... light is what's right. Leave the heavy to the Silverado Chevy. :D

I'm skeptical, but in the end I'm just waiting or Apple to sell me on it and then I will buy it and defend it in online forums. :)

Wrong! (for me at least) on both accounts.

Apple did make a iphone with a bigger screen the iPAD! and if the mini ipad comes out you might be happier holding that

You must not read the forums of macrumors.

Of course, not ALL apple fans are like that, incase you didn't understand the subtlety of my comment...also how is he justifying his purchase from that comment? Reading into it too much? Especially when he owns Android and ios products...if anything, his objectivity is more justified than someone else who just only uses ios or Android.

[/begin rant]
Maybe you are new to macrumors... This forum was never like this in the early days... Its only recently after the Android fans feel its compulsory that every second thread has to be an iPhone vs Android bashfest that the Apple fans have been forced into defending the same way... And are badly losing ... Because arguing with idiots is always a problem... They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience... Ofcourse there are a few true tech fans and are always a pleasure to debate with... But 99% of the Fandroids are here just to troll... And this forum have since become a bashfest...

You like Android... Good for you.. Please head over to the XDA forums... Why irritate us over here... When I used the HTC desire for a year I hardly entered this forum... Unless I saw a very interesting piece of news... just that most Android fans are little kids with lots of spare time on their hands...
