Wow, I didn't know it had that functionality - this nano thing keeps getting better and better! I betcha it will burn DVDs too, I think it says so in the fine print... :D
Dual layer ones at that! :D

re: servers and streaming

Yeah I've been having problems with this stream from a bunch of computers in a bunch of different places today.

#1 @ Work: We've got a huge pipe and my workstation is pretty fast (for a PeeCee) but still had major lag and no sound many a times.

#2 @ Apple Store: While buying my Nano (woot!) I tried it on a dual 2.7 G5 and got similar results to #1.

$3 @ Home: Got 5mbps Cable that usually hangs out around 3 or 4 realistically, still can't seem to get this thing to run on anything but the minimum even while tweaking streaming settings.

Maybe the server is still getting hit like a red-headed stepchild.

I do have QT Pro. I haven't tried it on a not Pro computer. I doubt it would make a difference.

It appears you are in Berkeley. I am in San Mateo. The servers are in Curpertino. I don't understand why you don't get a better stream. I'm using RCN cable service on the peninsula.

For those in Australia, it could be just the international connection for the internet. When I was living in Japan I found the keynotes did not stream as well as they do from near San Francisco. On the other hand, isn't Akamai supposed to take care of that?

Set your connection speed in QT preferences. This will let the QT Broadcaster to shoot off the correct video file based on your connection speed and speed of your computer.

OK well i played around a bit with the settings before to no avail, but when i set the speed to max (cable/dsl or whatever) it worked but had no sound, so worked my way down to 512 in the end that works fine. so thanks.

So much for Automatic setting!!
cheers

Mine worked fine (comcast 500kB cable). It came through streaming on QT7 for Windows in a large (640p?) window. I checked the stream and it was h.264. I also took the time to check out some of the older keynotes, and It seems they were updated with higher resolution too.

I ended up changing the settings to half my connection speed instead of Automatic on QT7 and it worked fine but now, instead of going to the stream like it did earlier today, it's giving me an options page: chose connection and quality but this has crashed Quicktime on my eMac.

Then again, I've not been having much joy with it - if I minimize a movie it get's trapped in the dock for good - I need quit the app and reload the video. If I can figure out how to get a URL from something on my iDisk then I'll show you a screenshot.

Neil

EDIT: Got it now with H.264, only it's not scaling like a high def movie, sound is tempromental and there's some pixalated ghosting stuff going on. Maybe my connection isn't "High" after all...

So I'm not the only one having all these problems. I get great lookiing video, but no sound, and the same problem with minimization that you have. I've reinstalled quicktime, removed all my codecs (DIVX only), and tried all the different settings (H264 and standard quicktime). All to no avail. I'm on a PB 17" 1.67GHz 512MB RAM.

All other video plays marvelously.

Although posted in the Kanye West thread, Apple has removed his performance from the end of the Music Event. The webcast now ends abruptly after the nano commercials.

anybody else notice how unenthused Jobs sounded when he said "I think you'll like it. It's pretty cool", about the ROKR? Bet he doesn't use one ;)

Considering how crappy the phone is, I wouldn't blame him....

My iMac G3 has not been able to run any QuickTime file ever since I upgraded to 7. I can't even view the new iPod nano ad :( It runs all slow then i get the beach ball thing and then i have to force quit. Never had this problem with 6.

The rokr looks lame, why couldn't they make it look more like a nano that has a sliding click wheel which would reveal the phone pad like a old nokia 8890.

There was already an article at slashdot discussing how lame the rokr is.
