How nice! Months after getting their new iPhones owners of some fairly expensive "no-longer-iPhone compatible" accessories will get a chance, for $29, to again use their devices. Apple, your missteps are starting to turn some of us off!

Those Chinese can do anything :)

bah...security is nothing from Apple.

Does this mean we shall soon see 3rd-party products from the likes of Griffin, and other manufactures?

Of course at a much decent price Apple is offering.... I will consider $10 for cable or an adaptor...... I need to carry my ipad on the road most of time, so an old charger, with a 30-pin cable plus the adaptor will totally serve me perfect.

It is strange that Apple doesn't have a stock of those adaptor when they ship iPhone5. I don't dare to take my iphone5 cable off my iMac, because I can afford to loose it now...and $30 an adaptor....that's ridiculous.

GEEEZUS! You paid $300 or $400 for the phone. You don't think you could have just bought a couple of extra $20 cables, and then shut the HELL UP?!

----------

I guess Apple is still debating about USB3 as a whole..... not just for iOS devices, but for Mac too. Before the Mac getting USB3, no way any iOS device is getting that ability.

Interesting to see whether next week's update on rMBP or iMac will have this improvement. Don't see any technical difficulty anywhere in the USB3 business.

Umm, the current Macbook Pros and Macbook Airs have USB 3.0 on them. Please know what you're talking about before spouting off...

China's Economic Miracle

Unless they plan to stop companies in China from making cheap knockoffs I'm not sure what the point of the tight control is.

At the current rate we will see knockoff cables before any legitimate 'approved' accessories.

That seems to be the secret of China's 'economic miracle' - a complete disregard of intellectual property rights.

the maps are fine (maybe some people have issues but id wager most people dont; for those that do MapQuest is free);

It's mostly the satellite images that tend to be rubbish for example in huge parts of South England. My current home is very nicely visible with my car and my neighbours car recognizable in their drive ways; landmarks are missing but on Google maps those that are there are all in the wrong place (like the village pub in the middle of the cricket ground). However, my previous home and that of my previous neighbour together are about one single pixel on the satellite image. Roads are fine though.

Went on holiday to Spain and took TomTom with me; TomTom, Apple maps and Google maps were equally rubbish not knowing roads that had been there for five years.

Tighter control translation: We want to make money off of every accessory that connects to the iPhone.

This. Got to love Apple's trademark spin!

It means that third party accessories will probably be just as expensive as genuine unless you buy a hacked version, which they may well disable in a software update. And then they'll try to convince you they did you a favour by making your accessory useless.

What I find odd is that I used to swallow up all this stuff. They would have succeeded, I'd have been all "gee golly thanks Apple, I'm glad you saved me from this evil Chinese accessory!"

What changed? Did Steve take the RDF to the grave with him?

The top of the adapter needs to be tapered because many cases have a small edge above and below the port on the phone, and the adapter does not fit unless you force it. Some cases are open at the bottom, which is fine. While I do like the new connector, especially since orientation does not matter, the transition was not executed well. I ordered a few adapters early, and now have them, but many are still waiting...

That makes no sense whatsoever. If that is the case, then there was no need to update from the previous connector.

Uh, it does make sense. If your harddrive is not fast enough for USB 3.0, then it wouldn't benefit from it.

Other Sources: Read all the detailed reviews from anandtech or other reputable sites.

The Lightning connector isn't faster than the Dock connector. The need to update it was already explained by Apple - the Dock connector took up room. The Lightning connector is significantly smaller (also, it provides digital connections).

Nice try though.

I for one love the new connector. The old one just feels cheap and this new metal one feels solid. Although I don’t think I would use this adaptor on a docking station or radio of any kind. You phone will be up on an angle putting stress on the older cheaper connector.

This seems a little... late-coming?

Were they worried that a reveal of the Lightning connector in, say, early 2012 would have somehow damaged their eventual iPhone5/new iPod/etc. announcement?

Maybe Apple doesn't realize how important accessory-makers are? The iPod caught on because it was a great product at the time, but it has kept its dominance thanks to how the market adapted to it, integrated with it. To thumb your nose at that is really ballsy.

Yeah, because every home, school and office comes equipped with an apple tv? ;)

Apple TV is cheaper than most of those iDock speakers out there ;).

Or you could go with an AirPort Express (also $99) and plug any speakers into it. Also can be used as a router or wireless network booster.

Point being there are plenty of options out there - oh and the connector had been around for 10 years....just make sure you buy all your lightning-compatible docks and speakers in the first 5 this time around and you'll get your use of them before they change it in another 10 years.

"They failed to:

1. Provide even an unnecessary performance boost by making the cable USB3"

- Yeah. That totally makes more sense. *sarcasm*

So being the one and only provider for a particular product is less profitable than outsourcing and collecting some licensing fees?

This is a forum. It is meant for discussion. You can engage other people in conversation and debate and it has been designed to be this way. If you don't want people to reply to your hot air, then don't post on this forum.

It actually makes perfect sense. Would my phone experience be hugely better with USB3 speeds? No. Would it make me feel better about being jerked around with a new proprietary connection standard? Absolutely.

I also notice you ignored the entire second half of my post you found inconvenient to respond to.

----------

according to what ive read the speed bottleneck in a transfer to the iphone is not the USB but is the onboard storage; in effect usb3 would net no speed gains. this could be why the Surface is also usb2.

that isnt how apple typically rolls -- partners leak. when have we known apple to let case makers in on the secret pre-launch?

thats incorrect: ive not been inconvenienced and really like the new connector.

...but there already are products in the pipeline, and they will be here by christmas.

just admit: youre upset because you didnt get what you wanted when you wanted it. oh dearz.

The entire phone leaked well ahead of the announcement. Trying to keep the connector secret for marketing reasons is not a good reason to hobble your customer's choices.

USB3 would be no net speed gains as long as their memory chips remain slow, they could easily upgrade the memory to support faster transfer speeds.

Yes, I'm upset because I haven't been given choices as a customer, and based on my 30+ upvotes on my original post I'm not the only one.

What a bunch of whining about a simple plug change.

1)If you bought/upgraded to the iPhone 5 you have a cable that came with it.

2) If you want to connect your older devices you can buy an adapter.

3) If you need multiple cables for your iP5 for convenience (car, office, home), you can buy these as well.

At this point we have not seen what Apple has in store for future usage of that plug connection.

About the only thing I agree with is that they should have had these adapters and cables ready to sell.

After 10 years of the 30pin plug (Which I hate) new technology comes along and people cry, because it costs money.

The adapters are one time buys and come to about 11 cents a day over a year, less than that over its life span.

The cables are a different story, but we need to see how they hold up.

If you have the money to own an iPhone, skip a few Starbucks Lattes and cables/adapter is paid for within a week.

Read it again. So you want it to say USB3, but you don't want better functionality. You just want the number USB3? I'm done. That's just a foolish thing to complain about. Other posters have already flamed you on the subject and said what I would say. GL

Of course I would want it to be faster. It still wouldn't be a really notable improvement though, but keep ignoring the actual thrust of my argument because you didn't like my use of the word superficial. Also make sure to continue ignoring the rest of my post entirely because you want to be a bigger fanboi than me.

Did your car come with the 30-pin cable, or did you purchase it separately? Do you not have any of the devices that you used to use with that 30-pin cable anymore? Does your car also lack analog line-in, USB-in and Bluetooth / A2DP? Did you think about the possibility of this being an issue before you ran out and bought a $649-$849 phone with a brand new charge/sync interface on the day it was released?

So lets, see:

It's my fault because...
1. My car isn't new or expensive enough to have all those wireless features built in, and only has an iPod cable that interfaces directly with the head unit for full control.
2. I don't want a mickey mouse solution that doesn't work as well as the last iphone and ipod. I don't want to pay for an extra USB cable that I don't need as a temporary solution with limited functionality, and then pay for the adapter later.
3. I trusted Apple when they said that the adapters would be available in early October. They might be "available" but they certainly aren't AVAILABLE in that I can't buy one, even from a high volume, high profile Apple store. Online they claim "5-7 days" but that's not reassuring compared to what my past experiences have been with that guesstimate, and then I have to pay shipping on top of it.

And yes, I have an old iHome radio, and I can't use that with the iPhone, but waiting on that wasn't bugging me. Waiting on car charging and use IS bugging me, because I'm running out of battery late in the day. If only the battery were 1 mm thicker (and the phone), who knows how my perception would have changed, but right now, we have a phone that's thin for no reason, with limited battery life, and without adapters to allow me to charge it, despite claims by Apple that the battery life is better, the cables would already be ubiquitous, etc.

The new connector was NOT ready for the market. Again, there was no reason for Apple to hide the specs of the connector other than that it wasn't ready in time (including for their own factories), and that is really unforgivable for the world's most valuable company. They screwed over their most loyal customers, and so far haven't fixed ANYTHING.

Maps? Not fixed. I live in LA, and the mapping itself is okay, but the traffic info is a joke (and difficult to read), dropped pin function is broken (won't forget the first dropped pin when getting directions no matter how many others I try to place), satellite/hybrid view is broken (only half the streets overlay).

WiFi? Slow and stalls out so often, can't use it. Have to constantly turn WiFi off and on again to get it to work for more than 5 minutes at best. Staying on LTE is simpler (and FASTER), and so far I've not gone over my monthly limit, but can't take advantage of home networking this way. And App updates stall constantly when I go onto WiFi for them, but don't want to waste quota on apps. Must be my router... oh wait, it's a Time Capsule.

Purple Haze? I stacked my wife's iPhone 4S on top of my phone and moved it around. Hers has no haze, mine does in many situations where there is no flare, not even CLOSE to a flare, just the wrong angle of attack from ambient light. If I put my hand out to shade it like a lens hood, there's a about an inch between not being effective or having my hand in the picture.

Like I said before, I did not ignore it. I told you to re-read. But I can post it again if you're too lazy to go back and read it.

It makes more sense to be the ONLY available supplier for a given product. Not in the long term, but in the interim. If Apple released the specs to several different manufacturers, they would A.) Undersell Apple & B.) Release sub-par quality products before Apple even had a chance to test the product on the market. Yeah, you can test it in a lab, but the real testing happens when 5 million connectors are shipped to 5 million customers and you have 5 million people testing your product.

Apple sells 5 million connectors = $95 million

3rd party companies sell 5 million connectors paying a 15% royalty to Apple ( LOL ) = 14.25million

3rd party companies sell 15 million connectors paying Apple a 15% royalty = 42 million

you just answered your own complaint -- it took a decade to make the 30-pin ubiquitous. what do you think the state of the world will be in 10 more years? these things will be everywhere and youll have forgotten what a pouty face you made about it.

At $20 or more each, and with Apple strictly controlling who gets to make and sell them? Maybe, but this will happen much more slowly than the previous dock connector becuase of what I just said.

And your name calling? You know where to stick that, mate.

This is exactly the same scenario as the 30-pin connector, so everything else will follow suit.

When the 30-pin connector was first announced, and for the entire life of the connector, Apple was/is the only official supplier of that connector. All of the availability/licensing/having-to-have-an-approved-product-plan-in-place-to-purchase-production-volume restrictions are exactly the same for the lightning connector as they had been for the 30-pin connector.

Just like the 30-pin connector was copied, so will this one be.

There are absolutely no new restrictions on the new connector as compared to the old, so it will end up with exactly the same market penetration.
