Same here, my 12.9 is a great device and I have no reason to upgrade. My IPP 12.9 is really great, got one on launch day and I use it every day. Been wanting to upgrade to the newest one for years and have never found a reason to. Rarely has an Apple 1st gen device performed so well.
The Apple TV HD is a Wifi 4.2 (802.11AC) and 2 GB RAM deviceHas to be a typo for the AppleTV HD but the sooner they get it off sale the better![]()
A 3 GB requirement is extremely unlikely. iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 both only have 2 GB RAM.iOS 16 has been likely requiring 3GB RAM to support GUI improvements
Don’t worry. iPad OS hasn’t done anything new or interesting since…they called it iPad OS. I doubt that’s going to change this year. Rumors so far seem to indicate taking yet another stab at multitasking. Hopes not high for that either.I still use a first gen iPad pro every day. I'm guessing this means it won't get the new iOS, which is a bummer.
That was also mentioned in a another thread when this was talked about. Both are also 802.11AC (4.2) models. In a few days we will find out if these assumptions against what will be cut is correct.A 3 GB requirement is extremely unlikely. iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 both only have 2 GB RAM.
Yes but Apple TV runs tvOS which likely doesn‘t need windowing support although extra ram for games is always welcome and it is a fork of the original iOS variant I guess. The Apple TV HD is a Wifi 4.2 (802.11AC) and 2 GB RAM device
Apple 4K 1st gen = 3GB RAM
Apple 4K 2nd gen = 4GB RAM
iOS 16 has been likely requiring 3GB RAM to support GUI improvements around multitasking/moveable windows and I suggested that this requirement would also effect older devices like the iPad mini 4 and Apple TV HD.
Didn’t the 8 plus have 3gb ram?A 3 GB requirement is extremely unlikely. iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 both only have 2 GB RAM.
Yes and so does the 7 Plus, but both the 8 and 7 have only 2 GB RAM.Didn’t the 8 plus have 3gb ram?
You can buy Apple TV 4K often at a discount. Even in the absence of a discount, Apple TV 4K is easily worth $30 premium for:If by no one you mean the cool guys on internet tech forums then yeah I agree. On the other hand in the real world…
You can't assume that. iOS vs iPadOS vs tvOS share similar build numbering, which means they do have some things in common even if it isn't used.Yes but Apple TV runs tvOS which likely doesn‘t need windowing support although extra ram for games is always welcome and it is a fork of the original iOS variant I guess.
Basically all that suggests to me is that 2 GB RAM will likely be the minimum for both iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.You can't assume that. iOS vs iPadOS vs tvOS share similar build numbering, which means they do have some things in common even if it isn't used.
- iOS 15.6 beta 2 (19G5037d) - May 31, 2022
- iPadOS 15.6 beta 2 (19G5037d) - May 31, 2022
- watchOS 8.7 beta 2 (19U5037d) - May 31, 2022
- tvOS 15.6 beta 2 (19M5037c) - May 31, 2022
I guess due to the specific IOS fork the RAM could be less (watch). I was saying that iOS/iPadOS 16 would be 3 GB RAM min.Basically all that suggests to me is that 2 GB RAM will likely be the minimum for both iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.
BTW, Apple Watch only has 1 GB RAM.
But the iPhone 8 was only discontinued in April 2020, I think we're looking at another few years of support for that at this stage.Yes and so does the 7 Plus, but both the 8 and 7 have only 2 GB RAM.
Yes, as I was suggesting all along, there is no way Apple will make 3 GB a requirement for iOS/iPadOS 16. It will most definitely support some 2 GB devices. But the iPhone 8 was only discontinued in April 2020, I think we're looking at another few years of support for that at this stage.
The iPhone 7 was discontinued in September 2019.
If we're looking at removing iOS support for older phones it might suggest that A9 devices such as 6s are on the chopping block this year - but even then the original SE stuck around till September 2018 meaning A9 CPU products might get a stay of execution till 2023.
Yes. Simply horrible value."Hurry up and buy Apple TV HD at $149 before it's too late" says no one.
And absolutely no one in the general public would have a clue about all that when they go to buy one. That is all geek stuff, most real world people think is gibberish. What they will know is the HD model is usually cheaper and works fine with their existing tv. Thats what the sales guy said. You can buy Apple TV 4K often at a discount. Even in the absence of a discount, Apple TV 4K is easily worth $30 premium for:
- Significantly faster and more responsive performance, even for 1080p (thanks to A12 and 3GB RAM, vs A8 and 2GB RAM)
- Longer tvOS updates and support
- Thread networking, arguably the best standards based smart home protocol
- Output audio to HomePod or HomePod mini
- More reliable and faster Wi-Fi 6 (vs Wi-Fi 5)
- Gigabit Ethernet
- And of course, 4K, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos
Exactly. It's basically my communications hub, e-reader (pdfs etc), video player, and sketchbook. It's not about computing power, it's about the screen size/form factor.Don’t worry. iPad OS hasn’t done anything new or interesting since…they called it iPad OS. I doubt that’s going to change this year. Rumors so far seem to indicate taking yet another stab at multitasking. Hopes not high for that either.
Don’t get me wrong I love my iPad, but mine is the last before the M1 and I feel a shafting coming on. But it’s fine for what it is and should always be, which is basically a portable TV and document reader and occasional second monitor.
iOS16 and iPadOS16 are separate things and can have separate hardware requirements. The iPhones wont get windows even if the iPad do.A 3 GB requirement is extremely unlikely. iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 both only have 2 GB RAM.
Still doesn’t make me happy bout it as I too have the original & far too early to mark obsolete.possible explanation, Apple did update the Apple TVHD in 2017 with a new remote that had the line around the menu button.
When my Apple TV Siri remote broke all the way in 2020 and I went to go get it replaced, they had to order a new remote, simply because they refused to replace my remote with one that had the line around the menu button, since my Apple TV was purchased before that change was made.
So maybe this document is referring to specifically the Apple TV HD that shipped with the remote that *didn’t* have the line around the menu button, manufactured between 2015 and 2017.
That was the iPhone 4... if you are going to mock, learn which devices actually had the issue.I guess no one will ever hold one wrong again.
This is all the more reason for Apple to discontinue Apple TV HD.And absolutely no one in the general public would have a clue about all that when they go to buy one. That is all geek stuff, most real world people think is gibberish. What they will know is the HD model is usually cheaper and works fine with their existing tv. Thats what the sales guy said.
