Could this be a precursor of unprecedented AppStore developer freedom coming from Apple itself? Just look at what's been happening lately:

-Verizon+Android real AppStore competition looming on the horizon.

-Dozens of Android handsets with a huge industry pushing hard behind them.

-AT&T decides to lift many important restrictions on their data network.

-AT&T exclusivity about to end, or at least under threat.

-Apple gets lashed by the media for lack of iPhone security, in part due to jailbreaking.

-Apple declaring that they are not going to leave an opening or "umbrella" for the competition to creep in. That was on price, but that's the mindset.

I think that Apple loves the jailbreaking market, the gray market, and anything that contributes to more sales, or else they'd have shut the door years ago.

They have to do this now, and it's only logical that they will have to compensate big time by bringing the jailbreakers into the fold, or else.

It's deja vu all over again. Microsoft started as a close partner and ally to Apple in the early 80s before stealing the Mac concepts and turning into a competitor. Google just did the same, only this time Apple know better

NO!

how can you sell a device that is locked to your sim?
iphones arent just locked to ATT (inthe US) they are locked to YOUR sim...
reread my original post

the phone is NOT locked you a particular sim.
My friend has been using my old 3G waiting for his to come back from repair. iphones are not locked to a sim........
When I went to the buffett concert I used an old razr for 4 days on my iphone sim. My wife used my iphone on her sim for a few days trying it out.

reread my original post, troll

What are you talking about? I've sold 2 iPhones over the past couple of years and neither of them were jailbroken.

+1. I was going to post something similar but I don't believe someone who resorts to namecalling just because I differ in opinion deserves a response.

Humor me this. What other reasons might there be to change this setting? You know, other than Apple is an evil empire out to ruin everyone's fun.

one scenario
  1. a security researcher or developer reported a security hole to Apple.
  2. Apple's security team traced the problem
  3. Apple patched the problem code
  4. Apple searched the rest of their code for the same problem pattern
  5. Apple fixes all found instances of this pattern of attack
  6. one or more code changes is in the boot rom
  7. one of the code changes disables the current form of jailbreaking

Namecalling? Really? Grow up.

sorry, edited that... you arent a troll, technically, just uninformed
you should know what you are talking about before posting here and accusing me of things. I am legally allowed to sell my device after my contract is up, and the courts in this country decided years ago that the carrier has to provide an unlock code when the contract is up, but ATT cannot because apple claims there is no such code, so they are dubiously skirting the law in order to try to maximize profit

and you accuse me of being the profiteer
im not a pirate, I jsut want to be able to sell somehting that is mine, and the only way to do that is to jailbreak... and you would understand that if you could pull your head out of SJ's ass

Great...

This is going to put a damper on forensic analyses, my grad work and how law enforcement deals with an iPhone as evidence. No jailbreaking is a deal breaker. Yikes.

you just validated what i have been saying
your friend used your old iphone with his iphone sim

and nobody said you couldnt put an iphone sim in a non-iphone

Lots of imaturity in this here thread.

Personally I am perfectly happy with my stock phone and it's apps. This is sad news for those who choose to jailbreak, but I'm sure they will come up with a crack very soon. Plus it only affects users who purchase a NEW 3GS (correct?) so it isn't that big a deal.

I am against piracy but not against users creating their own programs for free and opening source. Pirating apps that are in the App Store is wrong though.

There's a huge misconception about Apple.

They sell premium products, they always have. The iPod was never the cheapest and most feature rich digital player. However, Apple stayed it's course and the iPod is now the standard and the biggest seller.

From day one the iPhone was never the cheapest or most feature rich Smart Phone. However today they are the most popular.

The iPhone does not compete with Android, since there isn't just one company and/or model of the Android phone. Android phones will be competing with other Android phones as well as Apple.

Could Apple's share of the smart industry get smaller? Yes. Will one smart phone capture all of Apple's business? No. How can I assume this? Well, the iPhone is a premium product. Customers who want to use it had to switch carriers and commit to long term contracts. However, for example, Verizon will not be able to do this, because they already have the customer and if they alienate the existing customer, there is nothing stopping them from jumping to an iPhone.

Another thing to keep in mind, just because a carrier decides to use Android doesn't mean that the carrier will not lock it down and cripple the OS. They could even prevent a customer from loading apps and lock them into their networks.

You can sell your phone to another ATT subscriber or someone who wants to be a subscriber without jailbreaking.

So you edit your post to remove namecalling and then proceed to say that I'M uninformed and I should pull my head out of someone's ass?

Again - grow up. And get informed yourself.

You can be pissed all you want that the resale value of your device is extremely low given AT&T/Apple's restrictions. But again - your device is saleable. So your original point is again false. Have a nice day.

NO DUDE
you are wrong... try it!
google it!
i would bet you anything that you are wrong

you cannot put any att sim into an iphone...
as i said already this isnt about resale value, unless of course you mean the difference between a value of nothing vs. something

most phones on att can be used with any att sim, but not the iphone
my first iphone i had to unlock to put my own att sim in it because i had an old plan that included canada and mexico and I was unwilling to give that up... I could put my sim in any att phone except the iphone... you are wrong and uninformed and I am right 100%... i realize that I am not going to convice you, but the facts speak for themselves

people who act on faith alone are not persuaded by facts, but that doesnt change the facts!

How old are you?

Break your sim in half. Go to an at&t store. Do you think you won't ever be able to use your iphone because the sim card you had was broken? No. They give you a new sim card.

Wen will apple understand jailbreaking helps them to sell iPhones. If there's No jailbreak I'm personally not buying another iPhone.

Apple doesn't care. For every jailbreaker who might want a new iPhone, Apple figures that there are 2 or more businessmen who's IT department won't let them buy an iPhone unless the security can't be cracked by easy-to-find jailbreak software. This security enhancement will allow Apple to sell even more iPhones to government, enterprise and business customers.

Plus jailbreaking will still help Apple sell new iPhones. The majority of people who don't jailbreak their old iPhones will see the price for these less secure models get bid up on eBay (etc.), sell their old one, and buy a new one.

Personally, all you have to do is keep buying old crufty models of iPhone from people who want to upgrade to the shiny new ones.

Wrong wrong? Unfortunately that thread is 2yrs old and contains incorrect info. You can certainly put any 3G SIM card in your iPhone, at least with an original iPhone. Heck, you could take your SIM from an older AT&T phone, put it in your iPhone, activate with iTunes and chose to "Import SIM Contacts" from the Settings-->Mail, Contacts and Calendars option if you wanted. :)

If they finally do block it for good, ill move to verizon because AT&T is flat out horrible. Storm 2 doesnt look all that bad.
You are willing to switch devices because of this to something that you characterize as "not that bad"? Doesn't exactly sound like a ringing endorsement. Ever heard of the saying "grass is always greener on the other side"? The problem is that once you get to the other side, it is not actually greener and you will face different problems. Verizon also likes to lock down their devices like crazy so you will have to hack it first before doing any customization that does not involve paying through the nose to Verizon. That includes even getting a custom ringtone on the device. Also, say goodbye to ever having hope of a WiFi connection. WiFi is useful if you want to sync wirelessly with programs on your local network.

Here is a report on one developer's experience with piracy.

The author of the "Layers" application estimated his losses from piracy and found them to be significant. They quote him:
"I don’t think Apple does enough to limit app piracy. Until recently, the iPhone marketplace was heavily biased toward 99-cent apps, and it made it difficult to justify the development of a complex application. While they’ve corrected the store by adding a list of Top Grossing apps, piracy is still making it difficult for developers to write expensive apps."

older than you

ATT wants you to be on an iphone plan, yes you can break it in half and go into a store and get a new one (for $20) but it still wont work in an iphone unless you sign up for an iphone plan and a 2 year contract (which would be pointless... why pay for an iphone plan when you get no benefit of a subsidy)

I sold an iPhone to a friend. He went to an AT&T store and got a SIM card. No big deal.

and signed up for an att iphone plan

you cant take your sim out of another att phone and put it in an iphone... they want to be able to gouge you with an iphone plan, so they wont let you keep your old, cheaper plan

I hate to be 'that guy,' but who the hell is voting this positive? It's sad to once again see Apple actively trying to stifle innovation and leave only one road left to the iPhone – their locked down, heavily moderated version. If you have a problem with App Piracy, that's one thing, but that is no reason to sabotage and entire platform. Depressing.
