I'm feeling optimistic on this but...

I am guessing "Pro workflow Team" will make this "the most expansive Mac we have ever shipped!" This is ridiculous, businesses have to plan for purchasing of equipment. All this secrecy over a desktop computer is complete nonsense and a giant "FU" to every professional user that has supported Apple.

I have a feeling people will be disappointed.

Me too. Apples idea of “modular” will be a lot different then our idea of “modular”.

For example, you want to upgrade RAM? Buy this custom Apple hardware “module” that has additional RAM soldered to the module. With no way to just swap in normal memory sticks.

It doesn’t take this long to make a easy to upgrade Mac (ie swap in new memory or change graphics card). Hackintosh people have been doing it for years. It takes this long to make a expensive to upgrade module Mac.

I hope I’m wrong.

Apple is considering previewing its upcoming redesigned Mac Pro at its Worldwide Developers Conference this June, according to a new report by Bloomberg today.

Apple has said it is working on a high-end high-throughput modular Mac Pro for its pro user base that will be easily upgradable and will feature components for the most system intensive tasks.

According to sources who spoke to well-connected Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple has "internally weighed previewing a new version of the high-end Mac Pro" at this year's WWDC, although no firm decision appears to have been made.

According to executives Craig Federighi and Phil Schiller, Apple is committed to making the Mac Pro the highest-end desktop system able to accommodate VR and high-end cinema production. Apple has also put together a "Pro Workflow Team" to tailor the Mac Pro and other Apple products to its professional users.

The modular workstation is expected to ship alongside an upcoming Apple-branded pro display, which rumors suggest will be 31.6 inches with a 6K resolution and have "outstanding picture quality" enabled through a new Mini LED-like backlighting design.

We still have no word on when in 2019 the Mac Pro is coming, but Apple did promise a 2019 launch date in early 2018. If it's anything like the last Mac Pro in 2013, we should indeed get further information at WWDC, which Apple is planning to hold from June 3 to June 7 in San Jose, California, based on permit filings uncovered by MacRumors.

I am mulling over whether this is a good idea.
Apple used to launch products not to preview them. Every single time they preview something, it ends up being a year late.
I'd rather they just continue to make it as good as they possibly can and release it in September or December with immediate availability than telling us how great it's going to be with an "end of year" date which becomes end of year 2020.

Apple are just 'mulling' this over?? Their lack of commitment to the Pro market is astounding (but sadly not surprising)!!
The product is still being developed and it should be coming towards the end of this️ year. They’re just considering whether or not they want to *preview* it at WWDC. If it’s ready to be shown, they’ll likely show️ it. Also remember, this keynote is about the developers and software, not so️ much the products - so it depends on if they have time to show️ it so as to not drag️ on too long. It’ll probably take 2 hours to cover all the software updates alone.

It’s ignorant to say that this shows a lack of commitment to the pro market. If anything, this product’s very existence is a️ sign that they’re finally listening to what pros actually want - a powerful and️ upgradable machine; especially after years of lacking upgradability for their Macs. Stop trying to make excuses to hate on Apple, because you’re just grasping for straws at this point.

It's just a computer, not a car. I guess what takes so long is Apple trying to figure out how to create a modular computer that supports only "modules" developed by Apple or some certified partners.

I hope this Right to repair initiative will go mainstream and force Apple (and other manufacturers) to change.

Not promised in 2019. The exact qoute from the Mac Roundtable talk from Phil Schiller was;

«Now you won’t see any of those products this year; we’re in the process of that. We think it’s really important to create something great for our pro customers who want a Mac Pro modular system, and that’ll take longer than this year to do.»

and....

"We want to be transparent and communicate openly with our pro community so we want them to know that the Mac Pro is a 2019 product. It’s not something for this year."

Well, there are rumours that it will be just that. Modules with specific hardware like core module with cpu some ram and some storage, GPU module, storage module etc.,

Looks good on paper until it is officially announced along with specs and options for the buyers to see. I can see one may be skeptical on what "upgradeable" and "modular" actually means in Apple terms.

Well yes. Apart from the profitability in that. It is about the Quality of the experience and keeping the OS running slick. MS is bad at that because their OS is so open. This is a double-edged sword.
Right to repair is one thing... But upgradability is the most important here. similar but not the same.
Yes it is a computer / not a car but given the issues with the current mac pro I am sure they are looking at a solution for the next 10 years - and not just a tower. I think this will be a stackable modular system CPU / MOBO / RAM unit. then a GPU unit, then SSD Drive unit - say 4 per box - and you can stack as many as you want. want a 4 GPU system - sure buy 4 GPUs units. All connected by thunderbolt ( possibly even tb4) or a direct PCIE bus connector. They will sell the Units and encourage you to buy the parts from them but RAM / SSD / GPUs will be available from other manufacturers

Ironically given your analogy here people will be shocked when it starts at $4k and goes up to $15K (even if a similar PC is a 'similar' price ... yet if told by a gardener said that their truck cost 30K and tools were the same they wouldn't be surprised. It's a tool for making money and creating things - not a gaming machine.

If they keep waiting they won't have anyone left to sell it to... I mean people move on.

And then they move back... I have a PC for high end work - can't stand it. Always something wrong and I know countless other pro creatives that think the same.

This was a quote from 2017

It wasn't promised in the 2017 roundtable as you quoted, but it was promised in 2019 in a 2018 update. https://www.macrumors.com/2018/04/05/apples-revamped-mac-pro-to-launch-in-2019/

With pricing having been a major issue lately with Apple... Would an excessive price put people off? I mean - they've never come cheap... but - this thing is being built in the USA... it's having a s-load of R&D put into it... And although Tim may have admitted he's got it wrong with the new iPhone pricing... what if they push the price too high.?

The "current" Mac Pro is 5 years old and unrevised - a design that even Apple has admitted didn't live up to its promise. There has been no substantive information about the replacement except that will be "modular" (which, if you read Apple's statements carefully, could just mean that it has an external display) - and that it will be a 2019 product. Considering that both the 2013 Mac Pro and the iMac Pro were announced in June but not launched until Oct/Nov and not available in quantity until the following year...

Basically, if they don't at least preview it at WWDC many of the Pro users (who may get their hardware on 3-5 year leases, or buy new every 3-5 years for tax efficiency, or have expanded and need new equipment now) will be making alternative plans... if they haven't already. The suggestion that they're only "mulling" doing this suggests that a 2019 launch is hanging in the balance.

Also remember, this keynote is about the developers and software, not so️ much the products

The WWDC conference is for developers. The WWDC keynote has always been a big press event and often includes hardware launches or previews. Also, if there's anything remotely innovative about the new Mac Pro (32 core ARM processor - just trollin' :) ) there will be implications for developers (and clues in the next Mac OS beta) so the keynote is a good time to let the cat out of the bag.
