Not promised in 2019. The exact qoute from the Mac Roundtable talk from Phil Schiller was;

«Now you won’t see any of those products this year; we’re in the process of that. We think it’s really important to create something great for our pro customers who want a Mac Pro modular system, and that’ll take longer than this year to do.»
I’ve seen other people say there is a quote somewhere that definitely states 2019, but I’m with you—there’s no guarantee this is a 2019 product. I think 2020 is a safer bet.

The targeted Pro users still desperately want to see at least a glimpse of the things to come. They have been left hanging for half a decade already.

Naturally they do. And if Apple does a reveal before it’s quite ready, like AirPower, they’ll get crucified for it. The Pro’s coming. Let’s pick our battles, relax, and let Apple roll it out as they may.

If they keep waiting they won't have anyone left to sell it to... I mean people move on.
Lmao! The people who would move on have moved on long ago. The new Pro is coming, and the timing of their reveal won’t be what costs Apple. Except in these forums, of course.

I have a wild idea.
Apple could make a custom Mini ATX motherboard with all the standard PCIE, Memory, NVME slots on it as a normal PC does, and leave it at that.
Just lock it so it will run MacOS and let everyone else build what they want from it. :)

I'm also mulling over whether I want to continue working on OSX after 14 years because of the crapola that is the Touch Bar MacBook Pro, macOS and marzipan stupidification, Pro apps that died on the vine, and no commitment to desktop Macs.
You poor little thing, having to get by with a MacBook Pro. It must be tough.

Why is this so hard? There are a million companies making modular, upgradeable chassis for professionals. I have one sitting under my desk, running Linux. This is not a laptop where every millimetre counts.
Life only becomes difficult when Apple makes proprietary machines that are impossible to service, upgrade, or repair (macbook pro, imac pro, current mac pro). But that's not the goal this time, right Apple? ....Apple?
And if the machines look and work exactly like Linux boxes and people spend most of their time in cross-platform apps, what's the point of it being a Mac? People might as well do get Linux or Windows boxes.

Obviously, for some the Apple Pro apps are what would still draw them to the Mac.

For sure it will have a soldered SSD for security with T2 (and its encoding). Maybe it will have Nvme slots for other disk.
eGPU makes already Mac mini and MacBook Pro incredibly power, for sure you will be able to plug eGPU there too so the default GPU needs to be very powerful like Radeon VII for both pro and gaming or they could put an advanced integrated only GPU and optional modular eGPU
No soldered SSD but maybe an card slot like the imac pro and it needs to be T3 or T2 on CPU pci-e. Also start storage at 256-512 we don't need to be paying $500-$700 for 1TB of base storage when other m.2 cards are $250 for 1TB.

They’re mulling the preview, not the product. I figured that out from the title alone. Relax.
Some might argue that given how long pro users had to wait for Apple to release new pro Macs, the least Apple could do is to give them frequent updates. Others might be alarmed that the new Mac Pro will only be in the preview stage in June.

Because macOS is a better desktop operating system.

Just bring back the 2012 Mac Pro for Christ Sake. There is nothing much left in the Mac / PC world. Make something boring and milk the heck out of it.

For Years or Decades Mac tries to be the computer for everyone, which means it is more of an Appliance than a PC. Today that Appliance is the iPad Pro. The only one left on the Mac Platform are the Prosumers and Professionals. Start making something that is well design and practical instead of something fancy like TrashCan and Touch Bar.

Maybe you shouldn't look at the fan-concept render picture and form your opinion on the Mac Pro by it. lol

Oh how I wish the title was "Apple Mulling using Nvidia GPUs in New Modular Mac Pro".

If it doesn't use Nvidia cards I'm not buying it. If it does I'll happily spend £7000 on a new computer. (I need Nvidia CUDA support to work with Octane render and Redshift render).

Naturally they do. And if Apple does a reveal before it’s quite ready, like AirPower, they’ll get crucified for it. The Pro’s coming. Let’s pick our battles, relax, and let Apple roll it out as they may.
There's a major difference: the AirPower is essentially a nice-to-have, optional product. The Mac Pro on the other hand is a core product for a certain target audience. Apple is already losing these users due to a lack of a new version of it.

Sorry Apple. I had to leave you behind in the pro world. 2018 was a great year and needed to upgrade my 8 year old MP. No clear roadmap or upgrade options from you so I had to move on. Windows is a bit of a head scratcher sometimes but there is life outside of the Apple bubble and, believe it or not, I actually get work done. Oh the scary Windows is not so scary really. Have only had a few issues, but it's been very stable as of late. I still have an iPhone, iPad and Apple watch so don't worry...I'm still supporting in what's most important to you. The consumer world. Good luck with your new hardware.

Would it be silly to hope for several price levels like the good ol' days? Maybe $1899, 2499, etc...so a poor moe like me can buy in? If they start at $4-5000 they have already priced me out. I really liked upgrading my G4. As I needed. At my doable price range. Maybe this is something apple will no longer provide and I should not think about it.

The mini could have worked, but they crippled it for use with two big monitors for photoshop and lightroom and Capture One pro, etc. My 2015 macbook pro with amd radeon r9 m370x + intel iris pro work. i need more than 16gb of ram. Because of apple's overpriced ram upgrades I need to be able to 'easily' upgrade myself. I'd love to add a card or two if I want/need.

What's wrong with hoping apple will think of all us freelancers out there. One man/woman studios, that don't need the fastest most expensive computer ever made. How about providing a platform for us to grow with? Huh, huh, please.

I think you have your forums mixed. This is most certainly not an apple moderates forum, I don’t think they are reading this.

I hope with the focus on "VR and high-end cinema" there will also be
- options for audio people who don't need fancy overpriced GPUs but single core performance
- options for those VR and high-end cinema people to choose whatever GPU vendor they like
- options for gamers to choose whatever GPU vendor they like

This sounds silly to ask for and should be a given.

Two things make me expect disappointment:

  1. Mac mini pricing (with decent amounts of RAM and storage) is absurd, and there's no way the new Mac Pro will be more affordable.
  2. The fact that it's taking them this damn long guarantees that we'll get an over engineered, over complicated, and over priced machine. It doesn't take years to design an expandable chassis.
I've been using Apple products since my family got an Apple ][+ when I was a kid. I've used Windows machines in various jobs, but I've never once purchased a non-Apple computer. I hope never to have to, but Apple pisses me off lately.

Apple is becoming a victim of their own success. Johny Ive and crew have produced some beautiful designs, from Macs to iPods to iPhones. But now it's design and flash über alles, practicality be damned.

I used to be able to say, "Apple doesn't sell low end computers, but what they do sell is price competitive with comparably equipped PCs." Take a look at the Mac mini, and you'll see that's not true anymore: In many ways (particularly GPU), it's a low-end machine at high-end prices. Granted, the Mac Pro will be a high-end machine (at launch anyway; we'll see if Apple leaves it to languish again), but I expect the prices will start out high and quickly rise to ridiculous once options are added.

Apple, just give us a box we can open easily, that we can add RAM and storage (both SSD and HD) ourselves, with an upgradeable GPU. You did this a decade ago, and every other PC maker does this today. You can differentiate yourself from the others by making the box not ugly, and of course, with Mac OS. It's not that complicated, so stop making it so.
