iTunes and Google tie in?

Maybe a long shot...

Long shot? Not at all. After all, it is a music event.
I'd really like to see some new device, though.

Apple/Cingular deal. From this morning's Wall Street Journal

"Apple Computer Inc., in an effort to extend its strength in digital music to a potentially large new market, has reached an agreement with Cingular Wireless to offer a Motorola Inc. cellphone that will play songs from Apple's iTunes Music Store, according to people familiar with the matter."

They go on to discuss the event next week, etc.

Release Video ipods and Movie Store next week. The iPods will play h.264 and everyone will be content at the moment. Movies are $12.99-19.99 for HD quality, and they scale well to play on your iPod.
Pricing will have to be for renting not owning if they want a movie store to succeed IMHO. I won't buy a single movie for 12.99-19.99. I watch a movie once. I don't see the value in ownership of movies.

Anyways, it looks like the event will be for the phone. The NY Times says it's imminent

Adding just video to ipod isn't that amazing. Maybe if they announced a whole new way to control your music and video at home and on the road.. airport express with video streaming? an ipod-like controller to remote control stuff.

Just throwing it out there. It's only a week now :)

I do find it difficult to believe that the only thing they will release is one product at an event that they have hyped with the words "here we go again" - everybody knows how revolutionary the original ipod has become - hinting that things are about to get interesting again.

I tend to think that the iTunes phone will in fact be released (probably holding 1000 songs) but that can't be the only reason for this event - as many people have said on this thread, this is Moto's baby, and not apples.

So, can we expect an ipod pro; possibly to include wireless downloading from the Apple store, an ipod that integrates with the home cinema system, or colour screen minis? Or maybe somthing that none of us have forseen?

Oddly enough (!) I only have more questions than answers!

My guess is that it will be the iTunes phone, and possibly iTunes 5. I would LOVE for it to be the video iPod, but I don't think it will.

I have a feeling that the phone will disappoint me, because like it has already been mentioned, it will be a motorola phone with iTunes compatibility. What I really would like though is an apple designed phone...

I fly into San Francisco on Monday whoo! I hope its a new iPod hopefully with video. I'll then be able to buy one at US prices as opposed to rip of Britain  prices

Sony has there Location Free TV, w/ Internet Streaming? Are you referring to something similar to that?

I can't wait til Sept 8 after all they announce is the phone that "nobody cares about anymore". Half the people will be screaming "that's it ?! what a disappointment". The other half will be heralding it as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Yeah thats a good picture of what the forums will be on the 8th. Oh well heres to something really great to surprise us.

That slogan could mean anything and, knowing Apple, it probably will. I can't think that they've got anything revolutionary planned for the iPod just now, heaven knows how many refreshes and new lines we've had over the last year or two. I think it's definitely to do with this phone, and when it is, I want one!

Britain is not a rip-off. I know exactly why you think it is, but when you compare wages in the US and the UK, everything works out about even. (i.e. a student McDonalds worker makes about £5 an hour, minimum-wage ish, whereas the same job in america wouldn't be $10 an hour, which would make the wage equal, it's more like $5.)

OK didn't read every post so this may have been mentioned.

Engadget has this: iTunes phone will only hold 100 songs

And if there is a shred of truth to that then "1000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again." doesn't sound like it applies to the phone. :D

I'm not trying to champion the cause of the moto iphone thing, because I really dislike Motorola after I took the plunge and bought the RAZR, but maybe this is where all that 4GB solid state memory went. So the iPhone is better than we think, in that it can hold 1000 songs. If I could bet, I would that we will see the iPhone at this event. Does anywhere take bets on MacRumors? :p

A wireless iPod is the ONLY true revolutionary...

Everyone has been speculating the advent of video iPods, Motorola iPod/iTunes phones and what have you. None of which is revolutionary or important. The excellent Sony Ericsson K750i and K800i phones (http://www.fonebox.com/matrix ) can store up to 2Gig of music and have built in 2Megapixel cameras, while there are plenty of other portable video devices - that have not really sold that well. What WILL be useful and new is a WiFi / WiMAX equipped iPod. a) This will elliminate the need for a computer in order to purchase / download music and MOST IMPORTANTLY, b) Allow the use of the iPod as a VoIP phone with Skype or other Apple branded application. Apple didn't include an address book on the iPod for nothing! Again, a wireless iPod would be the true revolutionary and invaliable device. If they don't do it, then someone will, such as Sony, Samsung or iRiver. Not to mention the mobile phone companies. Don't forget the Nokia N90, Samsung i300 etc. Of course, we all know that if Apple do make a music phone / Wireless iPod, it will be done properly.

Two things stand out about this announcement - "1000 songs" and "in your pocket". The "here we go again" part suggests that size (1000 songs) and portability (in your pocket) are the key points. This would suggest against either a video iPod (unlikely to be tiny) or a phone (unlikely to get near that many songs), the latter being somewhat more of a possibility, provided they were able to get very large flash memory into the phone (at least 2 GB).

I think they're hinting at an even smaller iPod that's capable of 1,000 songs. Since the 4GB mini is advertised at holding 1,000 songs, that would suggest a 4GB device. As the mini is already a feat of engineering, I'm not sure how they'd get a smaller mini out there without changing from a hard drive to flash-based memory. Could the rumors of large orders of 4GB flash memory from Samsung be indicative of a device that's already been produced?

We shall see.
