I have an extensive collection of CDs that are not on Apple Music. Ripped some to ALAC on my Mac and added to my Apple Music Library. The files appeared on my iPhone and their sizes match those of the ALAC files on the Mac. Unfortunately, no lossless icon, but since the file sizes match, I believe it's safe to assume that local ALAC files are no longer converted to AAC when added to Apple Music Library. This is a feature I wanted for a really long time.

It seems that Match works with ALAC files. When I added ALAC files of songs that are in Apple Music catalog, they were matched and the file sizes correspond to those in Apple Music instead of my locally ripped files. However, the metadata matches that of the local files. Also, the lossless icon has been added to the album.
How can you see song file sizes on an iPhone?

How can you see song file sizes on an iPhone?

Settings App->Music->Downloaded Music (under the Downloads section). You'll see artists' sizes, and if you select an artist, you'll see album sizes. Once you go into a specific album, you can see file sizes for each song.

REALLY powerful

The mind does some wonderful tricks - particularly when there's a strong bias for a user to want to believe "they have the best" and "they can hear the benefits" and "it's all worth it"
Why is it all you supposed audiophiles can't understand its all about the enjoyment of listening. I cannot/will not speak for anyone else. For me I am satisfied with what I hear. Thank you.

I think you have me confused maybe?
I'm absolutely not an audiophile

I'm very happy you like what you hear!
Enjoy!

I'm in the same boat. The Bluesound crew keeps bringing up AirPlay 2 every time they discuss Apple Music Lossless, but AirPlay 2 is up to 24 bit / 48kHz, so no Hi-Res. There are multiple discussions of the issue in the Bluesound support community with no clear solutions:

https://support1.bluesound.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/1500001313502-Apple-Music-Lossless-Hi-Res

I'm considering connecting an AppleTV to our Samsung QLED TV via HDMI, and then the Samsung TV to Node 2i with an optical cable. But I have no idea if digital signal would passed through to Node 2i without conversions in between.
What’s frustrating is that it appears possible for BlueSound to add Apple Music as a source to the BlueOS app. They just haven’t done it. After all, Apple Music integrates that way with Sonos, is a source for Mercedes’ infotainment system with no phone required, etc. If BlueSound were to do that, it presumably would solve all of our problems, and they’d probably quadruple their sales.

The Node 2i is very popular among audiophiles, while Apple Music is not yet. Hopefully, that would change with Apple Music going lossless, but I think more pressure needs to be put on Bluesound. If you can leave a comment on the support board, please do so.

I purchased a Node 2i very recently when I had decided to move to Tidal for lossless and completely replaced my gear. Apple Music's surprise rollout of lossless has completely changed my plans: I'm now planning to stay with Apple Music and ditch Tidal.

I'm wondering how many 3rd party devices currently support lossless Apple Music. Our 1-year-old Samsung smart TV does not even though it has an Apple Music app. Does lossless Apple Music even work currently on Android phones?

I'm surprised how much of the older music I listen to from the 80s and 90s is already lossless.

As for hearing the difference I might trying on my iPad but it could be a placebo.

From what I understand, if you delete and re-download, you will get whatever version you’ve specified in Apple Music’s prefs.
I purchased Golden Hour forever ago. It’s not downloaded to any of my devices, but shows as an Apple Digital Master in my library - no Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res Lossless or Lossless logos show. If I search for it on Apple Music, I see Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res Lossless and Apple Digital Master logos. If I search for it in the iTunes store, it’s still only an Apple Digital Master.

So the Apple Music version is a distinct entity from the iTunes version as far as I can tell, meaning they may be making this exclusively an Apple Music feature. A shame. They previously upgraded movie purchases in my collection to 4K, which was a pleasant surprise.

I find this sound option confusing. Some Songs from the Spatial audio playlist does playing in lossless audio but not Dolby Atmos. Ie Kanye West Black Skinhead. Then Motorsport shows Dolby Atmos.
i have both downloaded again…

other example: Travis Scott album shows available in Double Atmos. I downloaded the album and when it plays it shows lossless but not Dolby Atmos…

my AirPods have Dolby Atmos active showing when I check volume option.

One Atmos track I’ve heard that I like is Norah Jones “Don’t Know Why”. It’s pretty stunning. So far, it’s the only one.
Yeah that track works well with it! Simple acoustic composition which shows off the voice

Ok, I’m trying to clarify something. When you play a track and it days Dolby Atmos, or Lossless, is that the quality currently playing, or the best quality that is possible regardless of your hardware?

If the lossless or Atmos logo appears against the track while playing, that's what's actually being played.

Good suggestion. I will leave a comment for Bluesound. My Node is the 2 (not the 2i), and I've always felt burned because Bluesound sales told me before I bought the 2 that I could do so confidently because AirPlay support was coming. It did come, of course, but never to the device I bought.

That said, I've always really liked the device itself, which as you know sounds amazing when fed with the right material. Since Apple is now making Apple Music available to various manufacturers as a stand-alone service, Bluesound should add it to their lineup. If they do, I'll buy again from them, even though they burned me the first time around.

Anyone know if a digital (say, HDMI) connection from an AppleTV 4K to a Dolby Atmos capable receiver will provide the necessary information for a true Atmos presentation of spatial music? And what about lossless? Can the same connection provide the lossless file to the receiver's DAC or another external DAC? Or, even better, the Hi-Def lossless file?

Similar questions for iPhone/Mac output. For example, I'd like to get Hi-Def lossless to a BlueSound Node. Any good way to do that? I *think* AirPlay 2 supports lossless transmission, but I'm almost sure it doesn't currently support Hi-Def lossless transmission.
My AppleTV 4K (new) sends a signal to my Denon AVR-X3600H that it recognizes as Dolby

Atmos. Not sure about your other questions.

Meatloaf-I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)

It is only in “Lossless” but no one can convince me that we are not getting some benefit from lossless on AirPods Pro because the whole song sounds absolutely amazing, but the intro of the song is probably the best sound quality I have ever heard on Apple Music!

Someone else please give it a listen and let me know if I am crazy, haha.

It’s way better. The naysayers are just wanting something to squabble & gatekeep about. I realize that Apple only has AAC Bluetooth codec and that’s a serious limitation(I wish they’d compete with LDAC)…. But that doesn’t change the fact that the actual Apple Music lossless files that the AAC Bluetooth stream is sourced/derived from STILL translates into massive improvements over the Apple Music files that we had before when played over the same devices/speakers. I hear the difference on basically every single device/speaker/phones I’ve used it with whether they were wired or Bluetooth…

Almost nothing will be able to perfectly reproduce “lossless” audio without any distortion…. But that’s no reason to discount how amazing the difference is. And anyone not able to tell the difference either needs their hearing checked or they haven’t actually tried it and just blowing smoke.

Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves is one of my favourite albums of the past few years, so it seemed like one I’d hear an immediate difference in. While I can’t tell if it’s playing in spatial, I can absolutely hear the difference in lossless. It’s pristine, individual instruments are easier to pick out, and reverbs and washes have smoother blooms.

Just to reiterate my concern about remixing already released music:

https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/thre...ming-incl-atmos.1084291/page-28#post-27084289

I'm not saying, that every Dolby Atmos remix sounds bad. It has to be taken with a grain of salt and with artist's approval, though.
I played some music in Dolby Atmos earlier today. The sound, depending on the album, can be much different than the stereo versions. I may stick to lossless stereo. But I'll listen to Dolby Atmos albums if recorded by the artist.

One thing I’m still frustrated with is that Apple Music still confuses live tracks with album tracks for me, even when I’m trying to play an album in lossless. I have a fair amount of live Dave Matthews Band tracks in my library, but when I went to listen to one of their studio albums in lossless, the majority of the songs were the live tracks. This has been like this forever, and I guess I was hoping the latest change to Atmos/Lossless would correct it. Unfortunately doesn’t seem to be the case.

Some albums (and I assume tracks) are now badged with 'Hi-Res Lossless' (Abbey Road, Golden Hour, Dreams are the ones I have found so far). Not sure if that badge was there before?
