Apple is not anticipating a drop in iPhone sales in 2022 amid an overall smartphone market slowdown, reports Bloomberg. The Cupertino company is expecting continued strong demand for the iPhone and has asked suppliers to make 90 million iPhone 14 models, which is on par with iPhone 13 manufacturing in the same time period last year.

Apple is expecting to manufacture approximately 220 million iPhones in total in 2022, which is in line with 2021 manufacturing. Sources that spoke to Bloomberg said that Apple is able to weather a downturn in the smartphone market because the Apple customer base is still willing to spend money on premium devices.

Prior to 2021, new iPhone launches saw Apple manufacturing around 75 million devices. That was bumped up to 90 million in 2021 as the company anticipated high demand for the iPhone 13 models, and Apple is sticking with that target level for 2022.

While few changes are expected for the standard iPhone 14 models, the higher-end iPhone 14 Pro models will feature a new notchless design (with hole-punch and pill-shaped camera cutouts), an upgraded 48-megapixel camera, a faster A16 chip, an always-on display, and more.

Current rumors suggest that the iPhone 14 Pro models could have a higher starting price than the iPhone 13 Pro models, increasing the average selling price of iPhones in 2022. Apple has not provided revenue guidance since 2020, but Apple CFO Luca Maestri said during the company's second quarter earnings call that revenue growth is expected to accelerate in the September quarter, and supply constraints are expected to be lower than they were in the June quarter.

Interesting Marketing move to annouce they think sales will be the same even though economy is getting worse daily. I don't think they really believe sales will be the same but view it as good press to attract people and even if they actually manufacture the same number of phone they can dump them in sales in the later part of 2023. They have so much cash thanks to huge profit margin they can view dumping phones as a Marketing expense.

no usb c no buy
Still can’t believe how they duped us with the charging breaks. “Everyone has 10 of them lying around in their houses“… But the joke is on us since they transitioned to usb-C. I’ve literally never once gotten to charge my phone fast because every brick in my house is USB-A and I don’t wanna spend the money on them. which, sure, is on me. But they made it this big thing like they were doing something great for the environment due to the fact that we had a surplus of chargers around the house… that we can’t use and must buy new ones. Such a joke.

You can use more than one phone at a time. I currently use an iPhone 11, iPhone 12 PM and a Samsung Galaxy
It must be cumbersome though. I know the tech/geeky side of it to be able to experience both operating systems. But is there an overall benefit or just because you can?

Interesting take from Apple. We’ve got a huge economic crisis in Europe with living costs through the roof. Energy bills are set to rise further in January to £4200 a year, a rise from £1400 last January. Our news is filled with normal families struggling to live and suggestions people will be reaching out for financial help to heat their homes by October. Fuel prices are at record highs which have pushed grocery costs up almost 30% across the board, with spending down significantly for leisure goods due to the highest level of inflation for 40 years. It’s a massive worry for tens of millions of average people in one of Apples biggest consumer markets.

Yet Apple are convinced these same average people who usually buy their products will all still drop £800-£1500 on a new iPhone even though this year is unlike any other. I like the optimism lol.

Smartphone sales are slowing because technology has matured and phones have gotten horrendously expensive. People are keeping phones longer than ever. Sure the iPhone 14 isn’t going to sell badly but I’d be shocked to see it sell in Europe in the quantities it usually does and if it doesn’t, that’s a significant dent in Apples expectation.

The iPhone 11 is for work and I use the Galaxy for games and Social Media because I don’t want to use these apps as often and I also want Instagram and the TikTok Spyware off my main phone (12 PM)

Hardly surprising. Every year, there will be people with 2, 3 years iphone or older that will be looking for an upgrade. With Apple dropping support for iphone 6s and 7 at the same time, that number will increase. Add on the Max version, allowing people to buy the largest iphone without spending more than $1000, the 14 series will be best selling ever, probably even more than the 6/6Plus. Apple's own guidance during their quarterly reports indicated that they will be selling a lot of it.

Luxury goods tend to be unaffected by economic events.

A phone is not and never will be classified by myself as 'a luxury item' its a tool not a jewel. With the price of bills in the UK so the average well off Middle class are being hit hard with massive food, electricity and Gas (heating) costs and petrol at a all time high, even pets are getting dumped because of cost which means healthy animals will get put down as the rescue centres cannot cope with the influx of new animals. A phone is hardly that important when putting food on the table and the keeping home powered is a struggle for many. A rise of potentially £5000 ($6094) in a year on domestic bills is going to hurt sales a lot, not only in the UK but in Europe too I think, with the heatwave destroying crops and now Germany is looking at rationing energy use and Russian owned Gazprom squeezing the gas supplies though the Nord 1 pipeline when they want to flex their leverage over the war, so big ticket items and that includes phones that cost over £1000, well they become the last thing people will be rushing to update. In the UK it costs over £100 ($121) to fill a car now, so even getting to work is crippling. Phones I think will be on the back burner this year for the many who can usually afford one.

With the current economy I do wonder if as many people people will upgrade from last years phone when it is basically the same one but the 13 is changed to 14. It is a very minimal update so it should lower peoples willingness to upgrade.

I believe only to the Cantonese speaking Chinese.
It's the number 4 that's considered bad luck, and in Mandarin, as 四 (4) sounds similar to 死 (death/dead). Hospitals don't have a fourth floor (maybe it's the morgue :) ) for example, but I doubt it'll put anyone off buying a "14" of something.

They have the customers who are willing to pay in any economy.
I am kind of intrigued by the new Samsung Fold 4 tbh. I am getting bored with iPhone and would like to try something new. The iPhone has peaked and it’s more of the same with a better camera (nothing wrong with that!) I am personally just bored of it. It also has many things, that take it ahead. Finger print sensor on the side and a under the screen camera
Maybe wait for the xiaomi mix fold 2.

The thing with android is that you can change your icons, so that's an advantage.
I am used to carrying two, sometimes three phones. I can just keep using the best of both words 😉 I actually like android on my A52. It has many things I wish iOS would copy and vice versa. The only thing I hate on android is how ugly most of the 3rd party App icons are and that they don’t follow a common design language 😅 I know there are themes but they usually miss some apps and then it just remains looking ugly

Still no USB C though, according to rumours 🤔.

I don't get how on one hand Apple were shoving it down our throats on 12" Macs seven years ago before the world was ready , yet on the other hand they're still using Lightning on brand new iPhones. Even their iPads are nearly all USB-C. It's crazy you need two different types of cable to physically connect your iPad and your iPhone to external devices. It's like they're built by two different design teams who don't talk to each other.

Was prepared to give my iPhone 6S another year, but with it not getting the latest iOS updates anymore once iOS 16 is out, I'll probably upgrade. Though most things should still work for a while yet as most apps won't drop support for iOS 15 for some time yet.

It's going to be interesting on the 14. Prices are going up for the Pro's - so that should tamp down demand there. The regular 14 will still have the processor from the 13 (the first time that has happened), which should also tamp down demand there.

Have to say, if I was planning on updating every year I'd be inclined to sit this one out for the first time in quite a while. Alot of folks are just on a 2 year treadmill no matter what (at least here in the U.S.) so it may not matter overall.

It is a good point. I have a Pixel 6 for a work phone so I can keep my hand on the pulse over in Android world (data mine your customer universe) and quite enjoy that for my work phone...but iOS is my main...as we see democracies tilting towards or tipping into authoritarianism that privacy angle for iOS will only become more important and a bigger selling point and one Android does not seem capable of following iOS on.

Still no USB C though, according to rumours 🤔.
Next year supposedly.
