Back in the day when there were more narrow candy bar and tiny flip phones in use, lots of people thought the iPhone was a huge slab in comparison.

Still is. It really needs to get smaller to be more fashionable. But there may not be a way to do that, and still provide a good smartphone (apps, web browser, etc.) experience... with current technology.

Wait a few years.

That's what I thought before I bought an iPhone. Turns out that a thinner slab fits better in the pocket than a narrow, but slightly thicker candybar.

what do you mean no competition???!!!!

and apple is looking market-share and developers to android rapidly!!!!

lots o competition + losing developers = major upgrade!

But not necessarily design wise. Most android phones have very poor building quality compared to the iphone 4 so apple has no real competition their. But I believe that apple will make significant changes to ios5 to compete with android. Although I do think they will make some design changes, such as alluminum back, different antena (like verizon iphone) and possibly bring the screen closer to the edge.

I sure hope that MobileMe stays a pay-for service. If it becomes free, then I'm quitting. I don't trust free online services... even if it's from Apple. My email, contacts, calendar, photos, website... all that on a free service.

Don't forget, it started as a free service.

so is this still a possibility for june 2011

cheaper, thinner, 3.5inch edge-edge screen little to no bezel, iphone nano, free w/ contract

and iphone 5, 4inch screen, edge to edge so the actual area will be out the same. enough room for 2 or 3 finger gestures

all at same 960x640 resolution? and smaller home button

Steve jobs abbsence is showing

Come on, you realize they start on these things many months if not years in advance, right? Jobs absence has nothing to do with what Apple is or is not working on right now. In 5 or 10 years, if Steve doesn't return, sure, things could change. Plus, Jobs is still active with the products and direction of the company, he's just not at the campus every day.

FINALLY... what idiot would believe that Apple would release a smaller iPhone? That has to be the dumbest thing ever. The iPhone is already pretty small... but it is a perfect size. Any smaller and it loses all credibility and functionality in my opinion...

I love this site but the rumor of a small iPhone just defies common sense.

I like coleharris's rendition of the next iphone. almost falls in place with the quote this thread is based off of saying that it is likely to be "similar" in size. That mockup sells me right away. I would believe that apple would put something like this out, granted the home button would'nt be physical anymore tho with apples switch to everything touch screen. If apple didnt take so many baby steps they would have broadened out a bit by making various models of products, not an ipad in different capacities, but competive physical sizes with android, same with the phone. If they want to get into the market and dominate first they should broaden the phone range and tablet range. They don't just have an iPod and thats it, theres various models to suit various needs of customers. When they figured that out they completely abliterated the portable music player market. They should attempt the same with the phone and tablet, at least tablet. The iPad is too awkard for me to use outside of my home and the iPhone is too small to replace the gap between the iPad. They need to man up and start being apple they used to be and take some chances, they cant keep this californian attitude of " but if we change the screen size then the poor developers will have to put their moneys worth into adapting".

Article says no smaller phone.

Right with the iPhone 5, but the "cheaper" phone (IMO):

iPhone 4, 8 Gig, cheaper camera, $99 w/ contract on Verizon or AT&T....

They could make the surround around the screen smaller to make a smaller iPhone. I don't think that would be objectionable.

Haha trolled by WSJ, btw I wonder how many people were saying an iphone "nano" would be a godsend and are now saying the opposite after hearing this news.

article says apple won't make a smaller screen due to app support but whats wrong with thinner? and smaller bezel?

Smaller phone, same display size?

It's possible that Apple makes a smaller phone and still maintain the same display size.
The rumor was that the display would got to the edge on the sides, so that would reduce the width. And if Apple ditches the home button or makes it smaller, and reduces the space for the speaker, and doesn't use a front camera (unless it still fits), then there you have your smaller iPhone.
So it is a possibility, but why would Apple want to make a smaller phone???

Definitely not a "smaller" screen - I think use the current iPhone 4 formfactor for the cheaper phone, and a larger 4" for the iPhone 5 but same resolution for developer's sake...

Just my take though...

smaller phone = sexier and more portable

Right, because Google's services are (mostly) free and it still works and runs great.

Yes but my calendar is not getting ad profiled on MobileMe. I like a little privacy, and even if I wanted to be profiled and indexed for free stuff, Google isn't the company to which I'd turn.
