Haha trolled by WSJ, btw I wonder how many people were saying an iphone "nano" would be a godsend and are now saying the opposite after hearing this news.

Well, iPhone Nano that only works with a bluetooth headset or plug-in headphones, that you can also wear as a watch!
but only 60 minutes battery life, unless it transform human heat and energy into power to keep recharging the battery. you'll just have to carry some Energy bars with you, as you may get hungry more often.

Definitely not a "smaller" screen - I think use the current iPhone 4 formfactor for the cheaper phone, and a larger 4" for the iPhone 5 but same resolution for developer's sake...

Just my take though...

yes I agree iphone 5 will have 4" @ 960x640, which would put the ppi to about 290-300? anyone know for sure?

$99 w/ contract iphone 4 is exactly what we would expect in June! I was hoping for a curveball, iphone nano free w/contract. I guess there is no proof in this but it could happen, it would be like an 8gb ipod touch with 3G. maybe only 4gb, and maybe smaller bezel..... I suppose all of this is my imagination now,

It's possible that Apple makes a smaller phone and still maintain the same display size.
The rumor was that the display would got to the edge on the sides, so that would reduce the width. And if Apple ditches the home button or makes it smaller, and reduces the space for the speaker, and doesn't use a front camera (unless it still fits), then there you have your smaller iPhone.

It'd be an ergonomic nightmare, and for people who like cases that protrude above the screen to provide a little flat surface protection, it'd be unusable.

smaller phone = sexier and more portable

Yes, the pointy thumbs crowd, and the 20/10 vision people can hold joint smug fests, whilst just about everyone else struggles to even make a phone call.

There's a practical limit to how small the screen can be, before it becomes uncomfortable for the mainstream user.

iPhone 5: "This changes everything, yet again"

True, and you'll have to change everything too:
- New case,
- New charger,
- New 30-pin connector,
- New external speakers,
- New iTunes,
- New 2-Year contract, etc...

Yeah, it will change everything! :D

Wouldn't a larger screen drop the iPhone out of 'retina' territory though? Apple seem to have hemmed themselves in with regard to both resolution (technical), and now pixel density (marketing).

And then again, new iphone cases will be sold to compensate any ergonomic inconveniences. Remember both Nokia and Sony-Ericsson are famous for making tiny little phones. I had two Sony-Ericsson phones long time ago, so tiny, fit in a shirt pocket, but a pain to use, would kiss the floor very often, good thing I had carpet back then.

But this would be a smaller iPhone with the same display size, if the rumor is true. It may just be slightly smaller that the iPhone 4, maybe about 1/4" inch less in length and width. That's not going to affect its handling that much.

To stay within retina specification, the resolution would have to also increase together with the display size.

how many times do I have to say it!!!!
the screen would be the same size!!!! thinner form factor, and smaller bezel

well the screen is only increasing a little bit, sure the ppi will go down, but would it be enough for it to not be retina ?

I have been waiting for someone calculate what the ppi would be for a 4inch screen at 960x640 res, I would guess 290-300 ppi, which would still be retina

The idea of that cloud only small iphone was horrible to begin with, glad they have said its not real.

Exactly! I said it belonged on page 2 to begin with, same with the deal about the slide-out keyboard.

They should offer free MobileMe service to anyone who buys an iPhone with a contract. Free MobileMe for two years -- new service when you get a new phone or renew your contract.

The biggest difference in the iPhone Nano will be the thinness. Compare it to how much thinner the iPod Nano was compared to the classic iPod.

how do i put pictures in a macrumors post, with out uploading to tinypic then copying the url

Several options.

If the photo is already on an HTTP server, use the [ img]url[ /img] tags around the URL to fetch from the server. Use [ timg]url[ /timg] to display a thumbnail of a large pic that's hot-linked to the large pic.

(Note that I added a space after the "[" so that you could see the syntax - don't use a space in the real post.)

If the photo is local, go down to "[ Manage Attachments ]" under the edit text box, and point to the local .jpg or other image.

Note that [ img] and [ timg] tags will appear inline in your post, but attachments will always be grouped after the post.

The NYTimes reports that although Apple is working on making a cheaper iPhone as well as integrating voice commands, the company is not planning on launching a smaller iPhone

Our operatives we pay handsomely ... Oops strike that.

David Pogue & Walt Mossberg, Apples long time puppets ... Oops strike that.

Ahem!

Sorry folks but this is a mere smoke screen, temporary in nature, inasmuch as David Copperfield was unavailable.

We are
No we're not
Uh yes we are, or are we?

Forget you ever read the leak these two bozo's let out.

Ha...ha...ha...

Only the incredibly immature little boys, post images with by lines as dumb as "cool story bro". They're so self absorbed & easily amused. Duh

I like coleharris's rendition of the next iphone. almost falls in place with the quote this thread is based off of saying that it is likely to be "similar" in size. That mockup sells me right away. I would believe that apple would put something like this out, granted the home button would'nt be physical anymore tho with apples switch to everything touch screen. If apple didnt take so many baby steps they would have broadened out a bit by making various models of products, not an ipad in different capacities, but competive physical sizes with android, same with the phone. If they want to get into the market and dominate first they should broaden the phone range and tablet range. They don't just have an iPod and thats it, theres various models to suit various needs of customers. When they figured that out they completely abliterated the portable music player market. They should attempt the same with the phone and tablet, at least tablet. The iPad is too awkard for me to use outside of my home and the iPhone is too small to replace the gap between the iPad. They need to man up and start being apple they used to be and take some chances, they cant keep this californian attitude of " but if we change the screen size then the poor developers will have to put their moneys worth into adapting".

Apple won't get rid of the Home Button.

man those phone engineers really like to spill secrets. you'd think after awhile apple could figure out who's been talking to the press
