It was rumoured for summer , then the 9th , now Oct ....maybe they will just wait till Nehalem ? ....gives :apple: plenty of time to clear all the old stock :(

No offence, but your argument is the definition of weak .
Apple is in the same market as everyone else, and needs to deliver proper hardware.
Take the MBP - it's slow, and has arguably the worst screen available on any notebook.

It's a bicycle dragging that Ferrari engine around .

"Performance" can be measured by many means, not simply more powerful hardware. If I'm more productive using a Mac with "lesser" hardware, than with a PC running Vista that runs slower because the virus scanner needs to monitor all my activities, then my Mac has better performance. If Safari renders my web pages quicker and more accurately than IE7, then my Mac has better performance. If the applications that I come to rely on for my business only run under OS X and there is no Windows equivalent, then my Mac has better performance.

It's not all just in the raw numbers. To continue with the car analogy, there are many SUVs that have 300HP or more. Yet, I don't think you will find a single SUV that will beat a Lotus Elise with a paltry 190HP in a lap around a racetrack. However, you won't find many Elises hauling a boat on a trailer. It's all relative to what measure you use to gauge your "performance".

Cheers.

All Mac Laptops Aluminum By End Of The Year?

So what?
October = little update for MB,MBP and January big revision?
so i better wait 3-4 months and get (hopefully!) a MBP with hdmi and maybe bluray :C

no need updated 08' MBP....

I really hope that isn't the case! To be honest I don't think it will be either. The revisions coming shortly are surely a major update?

Also, I think I remember someone linking to a quote from Jobs saying all MacBooks and MacBook Pro's will be Aluminium by the end of 2008, backing up the claim for a major revamp of the line.

Is there any indication as to whether they'll be in store on Oct. 14? I'm leaving for an overseas trip the night of Oct. 30 and need a new laptop for the trip (plus a couple days before I leave to migrate files, install software and troubleshoot).

"Need" or "want?" :p

Seriously, I wouldn't make any time-sensitive purchasing plans based any info in a rumor. Sure, combined with other info, one could ball park (and as the actual day grows closer, almost pinpoint) a date. But anything else is just being silly.

In your case, hopefully things roll out in time.
If not, they don't.
LOL

I think that the other year they brought out new iMacs while the promo was still on ..but it didn't include the recently refreshed iPods that happened around the same time , if I remember correctly ?

That's true, I bought a Macbook + iPod Touch last night and they said the new iPod Touch is not eligible for this offer. :(
I saw this on the Terms and Conditions of "Back to school" promo too !

Okay. Compare a Lexus ES3xx with a Toyota Camry.

They both use a significant number of the same parts, but differentiate themselves with the quality of the materials or the technological features. And the process of buying a Lexus is very different then buying a Toyota (having done both in the same city from the same ownership group). The ES3xx has always looked better then the Camry, too. And finally, there is the "cachet" each brand has in the marketplace.

Taken all together, it helps convince people to pay more for the Lexus then the Toyota even though on a raw performance level (acceleration, braking, handling) they are very close.

I like your analogy even more than my own. So, by some "expert analysts" on this discussion, I guess Lexus needs to slash the prices on the Lexus ES. :)

I still say color for the Macbook Air. Maybe in the same color as the nanos!

Mini versus AppleTV

I have little doubt that the woes of the Mini are tied to the existence of the AppleTV. Although they are clearly aimed at different markets, the mini can certainly be used as a much more capable AppleTV. In theory at any rate, since the Mini does not have the right video connections.

Will Apple come out with a new Mini that can serve as a fully capable AppleTV? Who knows. One minor thing from the recent announcement, however, is that purchased HDTV shows can now be played on computers, rather than just on AppleTV. I'm not sure if that extends to movies as well, but if it does and they can include rentals here, then that removes an obviously stupid barrier to hooking your Mac to a TV and using in the way that Apple intends (i.e., to send them iTunes Store $$).

I think that it depends on how Apple see the hardware versus video content market in terms of profits. I am waiting to buy something like AppleTV, but why lock myself into having to pay Apple for content like a drug dealer? I'm currently OK with Netflix for most stuff, but would be very happy to be able to stream free TV content from network websites via a Mini (for which you need a browser). I suspect that this is what Apple is afraid of. I personally think that this is a mistaken attitude, because you first need to get the appropriate hardware in everyone's hands, and then that will drive spur of the moment purchases of iTunes Store content (think iPods and ripped CDs versus iTunes sales).

If they finally make the Mini the perfect living room computer, then this seems like a win to me. I think that they are intentionally holding back on this, not because there is not a profitable market here, but because they are afraid of killing the iTunes store. Again, I think that this is backwards.

DaringFireball now claims that Apple will be releasing new notebooks on October 14th according to sources "familiar with Apple's hardware plans." This timeframe fits into recent expectations of a more staggered release, and recent hints to resellers that notebook refreshes would have to wait until October.
Event or no event! That is the question! :D

I'm glad we have some concrete dates now. Anything about a tablet? I see iMac updates in November.

Is it seriously too much to ask for a MacPro revision? I mean, come on... the macbook and the macbook pro have had their fun in the sun, lots of updates, plenty of use... but as a professional in need of a super computer, I feel neglected by Apple who use to be the leader in prosumer video editing.
January or so 2009 with Nehalem is my guess. There will be a 3.4 GHz Xeon available soon, but I'd say that's too close to Nehalem for Apple to put it in as an option.

9to5 Mac is saying that there will be a "Brick of some sort at this event'...what is 'the Brick'?
http://9to5mac.com/macbook-brick-riddle
Mac mini? Power brick? Something else? I don't think this is an obvious one, but then again I may be thinking too far into things.

So what?
October = little update for MB,MBP and January big revision?
October = Big revision, H1 2009 = Speed bump, possible quad-core for MBP.

Is it just me or does the less interesting laptops get more attention with updates these days than the desktop mac. Back in the day, there used to be many different Mac desktops to choose from... now its the MacPro or the iMac.

I need a new desktop mac with high end processing ability, something that can render HDV well, and has an excellent graphics card with the power to back it up.

"Most" people are interested in laptops than desktops. I read an article recently that Dell is trying to re-invent itself and will be closing factories and also may cease built to order machines as they try to figure out how to handle the ever increasing laptop demand coupled with the ever decreasing desktop demand, all while trying to regain loss sales and improve their image. Most people I know could care less about desktops, unless it is a fixed item for media, they need a powerhorse, etc. Everyone I talk to wants a laptop, so they can have their computer when they are at XXXXXX - and they do not want to be tied to a room.

The new 120GB iPod Classic shares the same single-platter hard drive form factor that is also used in the MacBook Air.

While the ipod classic is thin (but not as thin as a touch), I would love to see a 120gb tablet soon..... :D With the ipod touch, and this drive (plus other drives that are about the size of a postage stamp) - I really see the time as now for one. I mean with a drive that size, multi-touch on the ipod, and the abilities already in OSX (I use a wacom bamboo tablet on my macbook and also use the inkwell handwriting recognition - come to love inkwell and the bamboo) - I really think October would be nice for one of these - but yes that would be more of a macworld january thing

ah ok thanks :)

its annoying though cause I love the macbooks but its jussst to small to use as main comp

You can always get an external monitor and run your MacBook off that. Thats what I do, I need the portability of a laptop, but like the extra screen real estate when I'm at my desk.

Instead of having 3 events a year they should have 6 events a year and in the other months i would save money

Jan: macbook, macbook pro, macbook air event
Feb: save money
Mar: imac, mac mini, mac pro event
Apr: save money
May: display, accessories event
Jun: save money
Jul: ipod, iphone, itablet event
Aug: save money
Sep: developer event
Oct: save money
Nov: software event
Dec: save money :D

this would be so cool. i'll be so happy :D

no need updated 08' MBP....

October will introduce the montevina chipset and after that there probably won't be any "big" upgrades until nehalem, but intel isn't releasing mobile nehalem until H2 2009, i.e. next summer, so we won't see nehalem macbook/pros until at least then.

My Powerbook struggles with youtube..... please Apple... soooon!!

If they make these updates to the Macbook Air and go up to a 120 GB HDD, I think that'll put me over the top. I could leave the MBP home as a desktop replacement and travel much more easily. :)

Hopefully, the price is a little more reasonable, too. Starting around $1500 (or a little less) would be more competitive than the $1700 current price. :D

Yeah that was what i was planning to do but im a little worried about loosing picture quality (probably wrong), do you use a separate keyboard cause i guess the macbooks screen would get in the way?
thanks (I realise that im not really in the right thread lol)

Yea, or the 240GB 1.8" HD Toshiba unveiled just after the Apple event.

I believe that the new 240GB drive is a dual platter design which means that it won't fit in the Air. It is the reason the Air couldn't use the same 160GB drive that was in the iPod classic.
