If all the models are made from the same materials and have the same features then what would set them apart other than size? Not enough to distinguish them. White or Black iPhone... White or Black Macbook.

But... they don't have the same features.

MBA lacks internal optical drive, Firewire, upgradeable RAM
MB lacks dedicated GPU, illuminated keyboard, Firewire 800, ExpressCard, matte option etc

There's still enough to separate the lines. Just :p I do think the alu enclosure on MBs might blur the models too much though. Until January I was hoping there'd be a 13" MBP to fill any apparent gap, but then we got the MacBook Air instead to keep things confused.

So what's the deal with the ModBook... someone beside apple makes it right? I understand they use a Macbook case or something? How can they do that? Maybe the change will be adding a Tablet? Just thinking out loud.

They buy macbooks from apple, and then modify them, and resell them, they are authorized resellers i believe.

Edit: Digital Skunk explains it much better than i did.

The Modbook is done by Axitron, and they simply buy MacBooks and mod them to be tablets.

I hear that they are still quite heavy.

And I think adding a tablet to the lineup would be cute, but that's another story.

They are a completely 3rd-Party (though I believe Apple-Authorized-Reseller).
Its basically a case mod, with touchscreen added on. Here is a video review by AppleGazette

It seems cool, but I think on a daily usability point, its not that great. Like no easy access to a keyboard.

I'd say there's a farily good chance of DisplayPort at some point, seeing as it's Intel backed; ie Apple would have to remove it from the stock Intel board designs to replace it with HDMI or whatever. Plus the 2 aren't interchangeable (although Wiki reports that DisplayPort can carry an HDMI or DVI video signal).

Are there any Intel manufactured boards / platforms on the market now with built in HDMI? As if not I think Intel would be unlikely to go out of their way to accomodate a competing technology to the one they've backed without taking issue with Apple over it.

Having said that I just rememebred the :apple:TV has an HDMI port, so who knows?

I don't know for certain, but I would imagine Apple are Intel's single largest customer by a fair margin. If Apple wanted a board modified in this way, I'd imagine they'd get it.

I think any other company is Intel's largest customer by far. PCs still outsell Macs by a good enough margin, even if PC makers use both Intel and AMD.

A lot of PC makers don't use AMD right now.. I know Dell doesn't.

Dell does use AMD, but only with in-store configurations (i.e. BestBuy).

Actually, Apple is quite far from being Intel's biggest customer.

Largest Computer Makers
1. HP
2. Dell
3. Acer
4. Lenovo
5. Toshiba
6. Apple

The #2 PC maker, Dell, doesn't even sell AMD computers online, so I'd imagine that Dell is Intel's largest customer, though HP can't be far behind.

It is actually because Apple is such a small Intel customer that Intel can accommodate their "special needs" using their Hillsboro, OR R&D fab.

None of their PCs available online offer AMD..

Interesting that it's only an in-store offer. Even the cheapest online PC offerings (a $299 tower is the cheapest, I think) offer Intel.
AMD was easily found in the off ##1 and ###1 series of Dimension and Inspiron hardware. It's now only found in the business section(s) online.

I think it's fair to say nowadays that AMD is all but dead.

Its probably because less informed (or less demanding) computer buyers purchase them at Best Buy and Circuit City, and they could care less if its being power by Intel or AMD.

Until their twin AMD processors fry their lap. :)

my amd is not bad at all.. the amd turion64 x2 core and the intel core 2 duo are about the same. amd are even better for gaming

My beloved but sadly dying PowerBook G4 needs fairly urgent replacing - is it worth waiting a few weeks to get a new processor (whatever about the new redesign) - or to get something that will simply serve in the interim, and wait for the goodies down the line?

The "if you need it, buy it" mantra applies ;) Buy used if you disagree with paying for tech that's been out a while (understandable, two weeks ago I didn't go through with a new MacBook Pro for that reason), or struggle on with your current machine until that glorious tuesday....

Come on, a new design for MBP !! because the other pc manufacturers can make design like this now :

It's a copy of the MBP design and i'm looking forward to see in real before telling what i think of it.
