As with a lot of people have been saying, MB/MBP will hold its own event late summer or early fall. Like one of those "Press-only" events with the store down, and video up after.

This is where things get sticky for me, my Powerbook G4 that I'm on right now has run me through the ringer in terms of falling apart these past few months. The need to update is greater than ever with the fall semester approaching and I need something to take its place.

Thing is I don't want to buy into this Back To School deal, because I know as soon as I make the purchase in late August they are going to announce something new with better specs. In all honesty I can wait for the revision to come about, but as long as it takes place around September/October it all should be good.

I've heard many different things form different people, but what are the odds of the new Macbooks coming out this fall?

I know how you feel. I have never owned a Mac before and have heard nothing but great things about them, and when I saw the 'Back to School' promotion, I knew I had to raise the money by September 15th and buy a Macbook. My mom works at a school so I could buy it through her. Now, I am not so sure I will do this offer, even if I have the money in time.
So now my problem is going with either the offer or waiting for the new Macbook to be released. Does anyone think that the new Macbook will be released before the end of the promotion?

I really hope they are! A redesigned Macbook + Back to Campus deal is exactly what I want too. Considering that the Intel chip these new MacBooks are based on is scheduled to be released July 14th, I'd say it's likely they'll be out before the Sept. 15th end date of the campus deal. My prediction is 65% chance they'll be released before then.

Is there any chance they will update/redesign the MacBook this week? I am considering buying a Black 2.4 MacBook.

Nope, buy one now. Or you could wait for the update if you really really really don't need one.

Except for performance.

Thank you. Most users won't know the true benefit of having two HDDs in a 17" laptop. They are used to having 15" books to do minor work on, but having a scratch disk and a boot disk in the same machine and to not have to worry about cables being unplugged.

It would be nice to have the option of a SSD for booting the OD and a 500GB standard drive for scratch as well.

Even if a newly designed MB is released before the end of the Back to School promo, won't they just exclude it from the promo?

I doubt it.
So does anyone think that Apple will reveal the newly designed Macbook this week, and if not, when will they?

I think they mean that the MBP will get the tapering design of the Macbook Air. I'm not sure what they mean about the MB though.

I'm really not a fan of that tapered design. I think that particular look will age really fast.

i agreeeeeee one hundred and ten percent. and apple isnt one to go with a design that isnt timeless (look how long the current design has lasted)

I doubt it.

no they wont release this week. july 14th montevina is the earliest i can see them being released. also, they wouldnt be excluded from promo. its all new macs.

Apple has rarely released a new model the day an Intel chip is available. I can see the PC makers releasing their models first, then Apple will come in a few months later.

this whole "redesigning" the MB is driving me crazy. . should i buy one now? wait to see if it's really going to be redesigned. . i'm so confused!!
i hope if they do redesign it, it will be shipped in time of the back-to-school promotion.

What doesn't the MacBook have now that you need? Is it realistic? Is it more productive to buy the available machine or to hold out for this/these missing feature/s?

Once you can answer those, you'll know whether to buy or not.

it has everything i need. i'd love to buy now, but i have to wait due to unforeseen circumstances that suck way beyond belief. i was just wondering if i should jump as soon as i get everything situated or see if i should wait just a little bit longer to get the redesigned one. but if it's not going to happen for a while, then i don't want to hold out.

that is a great point, and i dont think ive ever seen it put like that. usually i just see people say, if you need it now buy it, if not then wait, but this makes more sense.

for me, i am waiting until later in the summer for several reasons: 1. i dont need it right now. 2. i have used my dads mbp before so i wont need that "adjustment time" some claim to have when converting to mac since it will be my dedicated machine for the next few years hopefully 3. there is possibility (or should i say probability) of an update in the near future (montevina july 14th and a rash of rumors in recent history) 4. this upcoming update holds the possibility of a redesign (aluminum, LED) and aesthetics are important to me (obviously im not saying more important than performance)

The Mac Mini is currently excluded.

touche my friend, touche :D. i had the notebooks on my mind at the time...

I can answer it pretty squarely on the head: laptop design has ALWAYS been clunky. Anyone ever try using a laptop on the move? It sucks. You really need to sit down, unfold, etc.

They have needed for years to redesign the laptop into something more mobile and quick witted. It's a clumsy machine, always has been. The tablet would be a superior design, and if they can incorporate writing directly to the screen with stylus/or anything so art and script are possible I would consider the laptop to be a mature and useful device.

Between iPhone and MBA I think Apple has on-the-go computing is pretty much covered... I can't see "room" for a tablet device; any bigger than iPhone isn't pocketable, and MBA offers a full OSX notebook experience in a tiny enclosure.

Have you seen the MacBook Air in action? I saw a guy with one on a train who handled it like it was a magazine. Picked it up with his thumb and forefinger, dropped it into a compartment in his bag like a piece of paper... it was astounding! I can't wait for the day when all laptops are like that :D

i keep things in other threads talking about july 13-15th... whats going on then?

(would that be intels new release?)

I hope they never put that MBA keyboard on the book at all. After using the MBP keyboard with a key cover for so long, it's become the defacto standard for laptop keys for me. When I take the cover off to wash it my fingers are in heaven when I type.

I know Apple may need to update their machine for professional reason, and not just for the sake of updating, but I really hope they keep the MBP keyboard.

And I agree with Jnc. If there's nothing new being added that will benefit users in the next update, it's best to just get it now, and wait for the machine coming in the next two years. I could have waited for a redesigned Monty MBP but the Penryn was much improved over my Core 2 Duo, and I know that the next real update to the portable lineup will be with Nehalem.

Since this book is a screamer, I am going to wait for the first or second iteration of the Quad Core MBP.

what keyboard cover do you use ?

This doesn't really make sense. If there is an update, there will be something new that will benefit users.
