Just got mine. Only using ~850 MB's. Unless Apple opens iCloud beyond iWork syncing (Dropbox for example), don't think I'll need 5+GB's.

Aren't other companies offering huge amounts of free storage? IIRC, https://www.macrumors.com/2013/05/20/yahoos-flickr-gets-major-design-overhaul-1tb-of-free-photo-storage-space/. Skydrive offers 7GB of free storage, and Dropbox free storage increases as users get friend to join.

5GB's of Cloud storage seems a bit, underwhelming for those who need true document/file storage and access.

I wonder how much value articles like this add to the MR community as a whole...

Either this affects you and Apple already has/will email you... Or this doesn't affect you and thus probably don't care a whole lot.

Yeah, I don't check my email that often. Probably good I read it on here.

I find iCloud way too confusing to use. I had a paid mobileme account, so I got that email, but I can never figure out what uses what--I've got too many different icloud accounts and no way to merge them.

Granted, I have not devoted any time at all to trying to sort this. I mostly used mobile me because I loved the settings sync. I tend to do frequent clean installs because I'm a tinkerer and also have never liked doing upgrades, so that setting was wonderful.

Find My iPhone is about the only useful thing right now, and that isn't even working properly with iOS 7. I have the beta FMI installed, but it still lists my phone as offline. Maybe they released a new one for beta 4?

I'm certainly not going to pay for more space, not unless they do something to make it worthwhile.

All it took for me was deleting an iPad backup from months ago--I'll just go to my computer. It's ridiculous that this is even an issue though. We should at least get 5GB per device.

It clearly adds to the overall understanding of where apple is focusing their efforts, and what services they offer. It also provides users like me (who did receive the email) a place to come online and say things like "as a user of the service mentioned in the post, I think this is a stupid policy on apple's part"

----------

Not every user has maxed out that 20gb, in fact most probably haven't.

And why should Apple have to pander to the self entitled attitudes, especially the ones that want to say 'but I've been x since . . .'. What next? Everyone that can claim they bought the original iPhone should get free updates and replacements for life even for broken phones just by walking in whenever they want and yelling 'gimme'

Man, "entitled" sure gets thrown around a lot. I think it's more about competition. I only feel what you call entitled because other services offer the same or greater storage. That's expectations set by the marketplace.

Love your username, by the way.

Do anyone here know what iCloud is?

If you're using Apple's products, it will continue to store content in the cloud.

This might help:

http://www.apple.com/icloud/

The biggest issue is for those users who store massive amounts of emails (in folders) on Apple's servers. I fall into that category. I have over 5 years of work emails that I store there. And with that said, I'm just hovering around 8GB (and for example I have one folder with 14,508 emails, each email with a fairly large Excel spreadsheet attached).

iOS device Backups, iTunes Purchases, 1000 photos, iWork files, etc do not count towards the 5GB.

iOS backups and documents DO count against the 5GB. From the page you linked:

"Free gets you a lot.
When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage. And that’s plenty of room, because of the way iCloud stores your content. Your purchased music, movies, apps, books, and TV shows — as well as your Photo Stream — don’t count against your free storage. That 5GB goes a long way for your mail, documents, account information, settings, and other app data. And if you need more storage, you can easily purchase an upgrade right from your device.

As a former Mobile Me customer who is being notified of the downgrade I submit the question: WTF can you possibly use the extra iCloud space for?

With iDisk I got it - store ANYTHING in the cloud. I used to stream my own music from iDisk to my iPhone while driving -it was awesome.

Now we have "nothing syncs to iCloud but the outdated and left-for-dead iWork apps" Unfortunately I had to give up on iWork in Grad School because the apps do not actually export correctly to MS Office format and I got sick of being dinged on APA formatting. Its been like 4 years since iWork was even updated. Grad school is long since past and I still don't use iWork.

I have an free dropbox account for the kind of file sharing I used to pay Apple for in iDisk.

Nobody is going to miss the extra storage...

Bring on the next iGadget and throw another shovel of dirt on OSX and the Apple applications that made me switch to Mac after the release of Vista.

You know what would be awesome "it-just-works" moment from Apple? If I could back-up to iCloud ALL of my iOS devices free and never ever worry about the space. 5GB is ridiculous.

What a pile of ****

Yes, this is really ridiculous from Apple. I was a MobileMe Family member for three years, we have 5 Mac's, 3 iPod Touches, 2 iPhones and 2 iPads in the house - that's not to mention all the Airports, Apple TV's, etc. So I feel a bit snubbed by this.

When I look at my iCould usage I saw two iPhone backups weighing in a 5GB, 5GB of emails (meaning I now have to go and start trashing stuff -sorry, but I prefer to just let my email stay as it is), two iPads as 300MB and then a host of smaller files for third-party apps. So basically a single iPhone backup kills the free space - I have no idea the content of that backup, what's bloating it, so I can't take action to reduce it.

So basically Apple are telling me to either pay or stop using iCloud backup. WTF?And annoyingly I will have to go and sort this out for six other devices now and four other iCloud account.

As for iTunes Match, I'm not interested until they offer ALAC.

I paid for MobileMe for a couple of years and was largely satisfied with it. I guess I subscribed after most of the bugs that people complain about were corrected. However, MobileMe/iCloud became irrelevant to me once iDisk was dropped, and I have switched to Dropbox. This is the true problem with iCloud - most people have found alternatives and iCloud simply does not matter to many of us. Apple should be done with it and purchase Dropbox. Instead, my money is on Apple hobbling the competition (Dropbox) on iOS and OS X...

I couldn't care less. When I got my S4, Samsung gave me 50 GB of DropBox space for the next 2 years.
I just saw somebody logged into their dropbox account on a demo Samsung phone and got 50GB of Dropbox space for free for the next 2 years.

What a slap in the face! Yahoo gives away 1TB of free photo storage on Flickr, and Apple has to take away 15GB of the 20GB they gave to customers?

Apple doesn't limit the amount of storage for photos by space you have 1000 photo storage. Photo Stream is independent of the storage limit.

All in all, I think it was nice of Apple to offer the free storage, but I guess all good things come to an end sometime.

the absurdity of paying to centralize all your data in "the cloud" to make it easier for the NSA to learn everything about you just defies logic. good riddance already.

If the NSA wants to look at pictures of my sons first birthday they're more then welcome to, the important stuff has never and will never sit on the cloud.

I know there are free storage solutions out there, but nothing is really free. They sell your data - your trends, your habits, your likes... Kind of like how facebook makes their money. Please use our solution.. ITS FREE!! No Thank You!!

Apple is more of a hardware company than a software company... well... besides apps, music, movies and books lol.

Apple doesn't owe me anything and if I need it and I trust it, I'll be happy to pay for additional space. I only wish icloud allowed me to store other documents up there outside of iworks.

Not as significant as it used to be

iCloud doesn't have general purpose file storage like MobileMe used to. Back in them olden days, I had an iWeb site with pictures, video and music, and it was my general place to put some files for private downloads. But that all disappeared with iCloud.

So, unless I'm using the cloud for pictures shared on my devices (I don't) or whatever iTunes might store and count against my quota (I don't), or have a lot of pages / keynote / numbers shared documents (again, I don't) this doesn't really matter.

I moved on when MobileMe became sort of useless to me and use other "free" sites for sharing (DropBox), or web stuff (wordpress, Facebook, et al). I'm not in the commercial web site business, so it all OK by me.

why not just go with dropbox, skydrive, google drive, etc. i'm happy it wont be a problem with me.

Guess it's time to go back to the days of making iPhone backups on my Mac. Guess I also won't be using iCloud to store any data, so what's the point of using iWork? I'll also have to make separate backups of my iPad. With 5GB that barely affords me space for my email, which I've been accumulating since the .Mac days. I've been using the new Outlook.com to host my business email and I quite like it. I'm not really sure why Apple is trying to push me away from using their products. It's that sort of strange behavior, especially when it comes to services, that makes me fear for their future.

A good place for them to start is everyone gets 20GB per device registered to their iCloud. I have no idea why I am penalized for buying more Apple products. I've got a higher-end Retina MacBook Pro 15", an iPhone 5, an iPad 2, and soon will be purchasing a new 128GB iPad with LTE when they update, as well as a new 27" high-end iMac at work. But Apple can't afford me more than 5GB of storage? Seriously? My Flickr has 200 times that much space and I've never bought anything from Yahoo. I've even accumulated 22GB of free space on Dropbox. I've converted every member of my family to Apple. My mom got an iPad 4, my dad got an iPhone 4S, my sister got a Nano, then 3GS then 4S, and MacBook, my youngest sister has had a few different iPod Touches and Nanos, my wife got an iPhone 4 and 5, my grandpa got a MacBook Pro, my Grandma got an iPod Touch, my uncle got an iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, and 5 along with a mid-range Retina MacBook Pro 15" and iPad Mini, my aunt has an iPhone 4S, my cousins have iPhone 4Ss and an iPad 2, and lastly various friends have also purchased iPhones of various types, as well as MacBooks, Airs, Pros, and iMacs over the years. And while some of these people might have eventually gotten Apple devices on their own, I was a big part of convincing them to make the jump in nearly every instance. If Apple had a referral program like Dropbox, I'd be either rich or overflowing with iCloud space, depending on the perks of the program! And the best part is that now I no longer have to provide much in the way of tech support for my family. My mom calls every once in a great while with a question about her iPad, but she used to call weekly or more with questions about her Dell laptop.

i feel really proud and smart today, i always argued that cloud storage services are useless, anything can happen to your data, there's no security, thank god i never used any cloud storage service.

Thank you! Almost everyone gives up free space. I got my free dropbox space every time I registered an HTC phone. 5GB is way too small.

Cheers,

Not unlimited, the last 1000 photos.

From Apple's iCloud/Photostream page:
No this is not entirely true, the photostream saves the last 1000 photos but you can create as many photostreams you like with as many pictures you want. Seems like you haven't understood photostreams yet.
Edit: with as much as you like I am talking about 100k pictures (100x1000). I consider that unlimited. If this is not sufficient for you, than iCloud isn't the right service for you.

----------

Not really. It deletes them after a period (can't remember how long) as its only designed for syncing/copying back to your mac. Sure you get 1000 photos that dont get deleted. However even for a family 1000 photos is nothing these days. In comparison Flickrs 1TB is enough to store over half a million photos.

iCloud remains a complete joke. It's essentially just MobileMe with a few bugfixes, it still provides a tiny amount of storage, and pretty piss poor features, with reliability you can't count on.

Again as the other guy before, you both don't seem to understand photostream, ergo iCloud is far from being a joke. For my part, I have right now over 2500 photos shared over photostream that do not count towards my iCloud storage.
