IUP for the win. You get half the original price of your phone back in the cancelled loan and no hassle at all. Was out with my new phone and a pay off credit for the old loan for the old one in 20 minutes on Sunday for the iPhone upgrade program.

Yes, it's not real money, but it's a lot more 'for' your phone than these trade-ins!

What a lot of you calling apple greedy fail to realise is that no one is forcing you to use their program. Apple is not putting a gun to your head demanding you to use thier trade in service. You have a choice!!

I'm astonished that so many people still continue to do business with a company they find so "greedy."

Trade-in values are less than the equivalent last year because that is the value Apple places on their own kit.

Nobody says you have to take their offer
It's greed. Go back to bed

Your telling me you paid 1000 tells me you bought the wrong phone.

And you paid 30000 for your car 3 years ago and the new model costs 40000. Rip-off,eh?

I'm astonished to find so many trolls commenting.
I have the 6s plus 128 unlocked. You have no clue what your saying

To be fair this is not limited to Apple. On the flip side, should they "think different" and offer better trade in rates. I don't know.

Realistically though, if it's a car, phone, computer, etc.. Selling it directly to someone else will always give you the best rates.

I don't understand the pissing and moaning. It's just an offer, which you can take or not. If continued, MacRumors will become a cesspool of complainers instead of fans.

This is very useful for people or companies who do not want the hassle of reselling. I for one am very hesitant to resell. If you put this online in my country, there's a big chance of cheaters mailing and calling you. I've also suddenly had two people showing up instead of one. And then starting haggling out of the agreed price. Some time later, my house got robbed. Coincidence of course, but it doesn't sit well with me.

I wonder, is this program available internationally, or just the United States?

You can do a historical comparison. Last year, iPhone 6 trade in price sits at 425 Canadian dollars. This year iPhone 6s trade in price is 355 Canadian dollars.

What made Apple lower the offer 70 dollars? If it not greed, what else is it? Can we safely assume next year iPhone 7 trade in price will be 70 dollars lower than current price? That is bull ****

Well, we could all play a little guessing game but who cares? You take the offer, or you don't, what other choices are there?

Trade in values are decreased at the Apple store because it saves the customer a step and Apple realizes it can get away with it. I doubt I will use it but it depends on how easy I can move a phone on Craigslist. It is a process to post something and then meet with the buyer. But it can also be fun to see the characters who show up to purchase your phone. That said, I've never sold a phone as valuable as the 6S, so if I do that it will be a decent amount of cash changing hands.

What do folks think I can get in NYC for a 6S Verizon Black 64gb?

Well. Apple certainly doesn't force me or anyone do anything. That does not prevent people voice their opinions.

The trade in price is disappointing at best. It is up to us to determine the residual value for last years's premium phone. The question is now: if Apple lowered the trade in price by 70 dollar, why aren't they lower the selling price by additional 70 dollars?

Apple has indicated iPhone's perceived value and not once indicated that iPhone worth more than competitors on reselling value. Now, the trade in program indicated that Apple think last year flagship phone really worth less than half of its origin price. This could also be interpreted as original price is overrated as well.

Nobody says you have to take their offer
Then, why would you suggest so ?
It is just imbecile that high-end consumer goods with multiyear life expectancy would depreciate 50% yearly. When that comes from their originator that underlines its premium quality at every occasion, then that is either a swindler or a lier.

In every deal that is not in U.S. dollars, exchange rate plays a factor. Just keep that in mind. Though the Canadian dollar is worth almost as much now as it was worth a year ago, there was a historical unusual spike in the last year where the Canadian dollar was particularly weak. That may mean that Apple just values Canadian dollars less right now, especially since Apple likes to set these rates and then not change them for a significant period of time (like a year).

There is of course a profit motive. And Apple is taking a risk buying back millions of old phones as it doesn't know how much it will be able to resell them for. If it is scrapping them, then they are worth less as well.

One thing Apple can do with all these old phone is very clear: if you break your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6S, Apple selling you a refurbished phone for set price.

For reference: out of warranty replacement iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S costs 299 plus tax. This trade in price: 200 dollar for iPhone 6 and 275 for 6S.

iPhone SE trade in price indicated in the article is 160 and iPhone 5S is 90. And out of warranty replacement cost is 269 indicated in the Apple website.

Hey: 100 dollar profit for iPhone 6 and SE and 75 dollar profit for iPhone 6s and 179 dollar profit from 5S!

Now add cost for refurbishment: how much do you think a brand new battery and casing cost? Almost next to nothin consider the sheering volume of supplies Apple gets. Abs Apple does not lower the out of warranty replacement price.

By the way: 275USD trade in price for iPhone 6S translate to 365CAD. Apple is taking 10 additional 10 dollars off. The Canadian trade in price has nothing to do with exchange rate.

People are mad cause they got tricked. They are told the iPhone has great resell value but then get crappy offers from Apple, and have difficulty selling on Craigslist. That's why so many just donate their old iPhones to family members.

Everyone should be using Swappa. Sold a dozen devices on there with no trouble, low fees, and great prices. The Apple trade-in is for convenience.

Are you forgetting about India? Apple has a whole country to sell refurbished iPhones in.

This means that your new iPhone has lost its first $100 value when you arrive at home, before firing it up.
There should be warning signs at their shops - instead of all the quality preaching !
It Just Works => It Just Devaluates (whether working or not...)

$50 for their best designed phone ever. lol no way i better keep that one just to remind myself how good apple design once was

I'll stick with my $650 credit for my old 6 from Verizon (albeit over 24 months, but it cancels my 7 costs).

I don't know why people are surprised... This has always been the quick and easy (but not financially advantageous) option. It's just like trading in your car to a dealership. You will get screwed in value, but you won't have to spend any time listing it for sale and meeting potential buyers. To some people, the time savings is worth it (otherwise they would just let the old phone sit in a drawer doing nothing for years).

My only problem with this program is they value the different storage capacities the same. 16GB vs 64GB vs 128GB all have the same trade-in value.
