I think people forget that Apple could just not offer trade ins at all.
Like I said, trade ins are completely handled by a third party company.
Apple does not sell refurbished trade ins.

Trade-ins would probably need to stay with Apple.. you my not get as much than gong elsewhere, but its better than nothing... At least u get a smaller reduction. And at the end of the day, that's probably want users want anyway. Just by going elsewhere though they would get better pricing, but its probably more for convenience. than anything..

e.g Apple's doing this trade-in, while we can also get a phone at the same store...

This seems like a big mistake on their pricing analysts part. I don't know the ins and outs of the carrier trade-ins and obviously there's an non-quantified benefit from the carriers to get you to upgrade your phone and sign a new contract, or sign as a new customer completely but these trade-in values are ridiculous. Does Apple not realize that by offering such a low-amount that it's affecting their own phones desirability and long-term value? This is why luxury brands do not do trade-ins (for the most part) because their stated value would not equate to their perceived values.

Convenience is throwing it away at a recycling point.
Not filling in endless marketing surveys to collect a mere $300 (as a shameless ripoff) which takes more time than a Craigslist or Marktplaats deal.

When you have a partner like Best Buy giving out over 400 dollars for a 6s plus and Apple offering 315 for the same phone, you know they need to adjust their prices. Yes, it's store credit at BB, but Apple is doing the same, soo...

Joke is on them. I traded a iPhone 5s through their program and I was supposed to receive a $125 gift card, but they accidentally sent me 3 separate $125 gift cards totaling $375. Haha.

It's a good thing that I rather pass down the older electronics to mum and dad, family or just friends.
I get to update, and they get a perfectly functional device for years to come. :)

Agreed. Pass it down or ask a token fee from friends or family. Mum and Dad get a pass. It's been my experience that people take better care of things if they have some 'skin in the game'.

If you feel guilty about charging a fee, then get them a bigger gift this Holiday season :)

People are getting upset. But guys, this is what Apple REALLY thinks their phones are worth! ;)
We're the stupid ones shelling out 1000s for them.

Nope. After sellers fees it's like 30% more or so. That doesn't take into account the hassle of mailing in the iPhone, hoping the person doesn't file a claim or request a refund, or the fact that the Apple credit is instant in-store. There's definitely a convenience fee, but you aren't going to get twice as much on eBay.

craigssssslissssst! I got double the price than what Apple is offering here. eBay is not the only alternative.

No, it's what the market says the phones are worth, plus a convenience fee for selling it to someone who is willing to buy a refurbished, as opposed to new, older iPhone model.

If anyone is surprised the value of their iPhone declines after they start using it, they are an idiot.
