Max Tech made Apple even more money because it looks like most orders are doubling the storage to avoid the throttling.
By "doubling" I hope you mean "512GB or higher," because 10 core/16/512 is what I went with since I have yet to ever go above 300GB thanks to a 16TB Synology NAS.

I agree with the other poster that none of these changes meet the definition of "destroy". If you want to use that term, you won't have any descriptive words for a shift to 2:1. Though admittedly that would be inconceivable. Insert Princes Bride reference here.

Then we must have very different definitions of "destroy"...

The Euro is at a 20-year low vs the USD. The Euro has lost 37% of its value against the dollar since 2009. To most traders and financial analysts, it fits the definition of "destroyed", especially in the FOREX community.

Even in the last year, the Euro is down nearly 20%.

I was good. I didn't buy anything today, though I was tempted. :)

What I find strange is that shipping dates aren't really slipping any further than what they have in the first minute or two.

I agree. Perplexing how people are 😞 a BTO machine shipping from China in the current climate in....4 weeks. BTO was never going to ship 15 July at launch. You'd need the stock model for that.

I've ordered in-stock garden furniture which has taken months to arrive! This is ultra-quick in comparison.

I think the assumption is they would have pre-made some of the common BTO configurations. I sort of doubt they made 0 BTO configurations until today.

It’s the charge for the gift card if purchased through EDU store. Apple knocks off the 150 from the computer price.

it is pretty weird and confusing how it is presented.

Says $150 instantly off and shows the financing for edu price less $150 ($79.08 for 12 months)

then a separate charge of $150 gift card financed too ($12.50 for 12 months) haha.

Combined $91.58/mo give or take over 12 months.

In the end no matter how you slice it, its $1099 (if base) and you get a $150 gift card.

one of four things
1- lower demand that expected
2- higher supply than expected
3- lower demand and higher supply combined
4- a perfect equilibrium relatively speaking of units produced to preordered

I think the "$150 off" they put on there so that if you return the laptop they keep the extra $150 and you keep the gift card since there's no returns on gift cards?

With that config, what made you choose this over the 14in M1pro?
Funny you should ask as I've been vacillating between the two. I already have an M1 16" Pro, and it serves its purpose as it's my main WFH Mac, but I wanted something not as big, bulky and heavy for lighter more portable use. I need 2TB of storage as this will be my Music/Photos Mac, so there is still a decent price difference between the two and the Air is a bit lighter and thinner.

However, I kind of gotten used to the MiniLED display on my 16" with those deep true blacks, etc., so if the M2 Air doesn't run cool and doesn't last all day on a single charge, and the display isn't great, I may just return it and get a similarly spec'd 14" Pro, even if it's a bit heavier. The MiniLED display would justify the price difference for me.

I’d love one but isn’t the pricing absurd this time around?
Air M2 with 16ram 512ssd in UK comes at £1749, £150 cheaper than the 14” Pro with same storage/ram ( but the pro have better cpu, gpu, screen and speakers 🤔
Macbook Pro 14'' is 1735 right now in the UK in BT Shop, Amazon, Currys, etc.

Already ordered Midnight base model but thinking if should add 16gb ram, and then obviously you think about 512DDR and then it may be worth going for a Pro.

I am probably crazy but I ordered the 8GB/256Gb Base in Midnight.

Everyone is saying upgrade to 16Gb and 512Gb ... but that is too rich for me for what will be a general OA and web browsing machine. Also in UK that configuration would be too close to the MBP 14 price. The next up-sell would be tempting but where does it end ?

so... and I held off on placing the order until the delivery date had slipped a few weeks. I can then see the early reviews and get confirmation that 8/256 is usable...whilst still having a place in the queue.

I'm in a similar boat. I already have an M1 Max MBP but wanted something lighter. The MBP is currently "tied" to a desk with two monitors, so it's a bit inconvenient to disconnect and take through the house or on short trips, so I was looking for something lighter without needing the power the M1 Max gives me.

I decided to save money and not buy anything. I did come close, though, on an Air. Another option is the renewed Mac Studio that would free up that MBP. I just couldn't do it, though.

Apple always has great displays, even if they're not mini-LED. Those are even more premium, but in most cases if you're not watching video where blacks come into play, you may not notice much difference. I can't say about 120Hz, though. Some people can see it, some can't.

The store never opens right at 8:00 EST. Got the order in at 8:03 - Midnight/16/2TB/67, August 2-9. I've been waiting ever since this was rumored months ago, so another 3 weeks is what it is. At least, my order is in, upgrading from a 2014 Macbook pro. For the people who don't order today, I expect they'll have a longer BTO wait time. I ordered through the education store and pricing it out vs. the regular store, I saved $180, + $150 gift card + $46 apple care.

I think you made the right choice. Max Tech, the biggest purveyors of the 256GB scare, were putting the M2 MBP through torture tests that 99% of users will never do. They got it to overheat and throttle on Red Raw 8K footage, something that a year ago required a Mac Pro to even think about doing. Why would any power user be looking at an entry level machine when a 14" MBP can be had for a tiny bit more with loads of advanced features? If you're thinking of serious editing of 8K Red Raw footage, you're looking at the wrong machine.

Others who tried similar things, like the Everyday Dad, couldn't even get his fans to go to more than 50% on his torture tests, with the laptop remaining quite cool. IMO, the issue is way overblown, though I'm sure Apple is laughing all the way to the bank with all the FUD causing people to buy more storage and RAM than they need.

i doubt you will notice any difference whether you had bought a 512GB configuration or a 256GB with what you're using it for.

Eh? I was hitting Refresh every 15 seconds starting at 7:58AM Eastern, and the store came up for me at almost 8:00AM on the dot. No one was more surprised than me, but yeah, have to disagree with your statement. Had my selection in the cart at 8:01 (Midnight 10/16/512/67w) and it was already saying August 2-9.

Even though the delay is a bit maddening it makes me happy to see this. I sat at my computer at exactly 8 AM EDT and started the order process. I was done with my Midnight 10/24/1TB at 8:03 AM and I was already at Aug 2-9. I was berating myself for not being a little more urgent (I mean 3 minutes instead of 1) but apparently it wouldn't have mattered anyway.

FWIW, I refreshed at 8:00 exactly and it was after a couple more refreshes that it came up. Regardless, the order is in and I made sure to triple check it before placing it.

MBA with 24GB of RAM doesn't make sense, it's a high amount of RAM with not very high processing power (only 4 performance cores with no active cooling).

If you have high RAM needs you also have high CPU needs, so go to the MBP 14" 32GB, you also get a better screen (120 Hz), more ports, much better speakers. Or be patient and wait for the 15" MBA or the MBP M2 14".

When it comes to the store coming up, YMMV. It's been noted in the past that the store comes up faster on the mobile Apple Store app, e.g. on iPhone/iPad apps, before it comes up on Safari of any kind. When I'm buying iPhones, I refresh four devices at once and the iPhone/iPad always comes up before my desktop, sometimes by differences of more than 10 minutes. Granted today is not an iPhone day. Apple sells more iPhones on opening day than they probably sell all Macs for the whole year.

It is a bit unfair, but the store will appear for some people earlier than it will for others. In cases like a Midnight MBA, seconds may make a difference. I've had shipping date slips while in the cart in the past.

Got me an 8/256. That's all I need. No clue when it will be here. Don't want to know, really. Just want to wake up one day and find the UPS man at my front door delivering me another fine piece of overpriced Apple hardware. Gotta love Apple!
