I know what free means. I don't know why you put it in quotes. It's a free service Apple is offering to their customers. People like you need an excuse to complain about anything and everything.

LMAO, do you appear to be complaining in your post about complaining? I don't think my post was a complaint. And what I meant with the quotes is that it really isn't free, think about it. It is all marketing.

It is free. You're the same type of person who would complain about a gift with a $99 purchase at a retailer costing "$99." It doesn't. You're paying for a product that would already have cost x amount of dollars. In addition, the party selling it to you is giving you something free of charge, gratis, complimentary. Call it what you want; it doesn't change the fact that it's free.

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but besides this being fairly benign on face level it's smart from a business perspective. By letting people personalise them more heavily, it'll make the second hand market less appealing to most, putting more money in Apple's pockets with people buying new instead.

it is included with the price that you pay Apple for the airpod case, which is far from being free. It is marketing.

This is the charging case that comes with the AirPods, regardless of which retailer you buy it from. Please understand what you're talking about before you speak.

Again it is not free. It is included with the price for the airpod case. Just like when you buy a new car and they give you that "free" tank of gas with it.

And guess what, you can get those cases at a different retailer and save about $30, but you would forego that "free" engraving that Apple store provides.

Man... such anger!

Engraving is perfectly fine, and in fact useful. At my workplace, airpods are littered around on every desk. Engraving reduces the chances of getting Airpods mixed up. Are people this upset simply because people who want engraving now have more options?!

People are upset because they enjoy being upset, and also because they think Apple can only ever focus on a single thing (which, if you look at the breadth of products and services launched last year, is a strange belief to have).

It saddens me to see what Apple has become. Getting trashier by the day.
Trashier? You do know that Apple already offered a feature like this all the way back in 2007, with the iPod Nano RED edition? You didnt, and now you do. Now you're comment looks a lot more trashier. You're welcome.

Adding the emojis is a nice feature for those who want it. To each their own.

What bothers me IS THAT NOW ALL THE TEXT YOU CAN ENGRAVE IS CAPITALIZED SO IT LOOKS LIKE YOUR AIRPODS ARE SCREAMING AT YOU. The character limit is smaller now as well due to the capitalization and larger font size. Glad my girlfriend got mine done (with a peaceful message that would no longer fit or look right) before this change.

Apple ruined this one good thing. Equivalent to putting stickers all over a Macbook Pro It's optional thank goodness.

I never engrave anythig.. Makes ya devices stand out as 'important'

People on these forums don't understand the meaning of "optional".

They are the same people that, when Apple releases 6 new iPhone color choices, the last one being Pink Gold, and they hate the look of pink gold, they scream angrily and stupidly at Apple for giving customers the choice to buy a pink gold iPhone.

Meanwhile Lenovo is letting you engrave your laptop. Choose your own custom text or predefined phrases such as, "Go away! I'm working!"

/s

I, personally, think this is stupid, but I can see a lot of people loving the option. It would be even more popular if they let you use your own, custom-made memoji (or whatever they're called).

Laptops are a different case because it's a feature that schools and businesses want both for theft protection and marketing. You can't sell a computer that says "Property of XYZ Corp" on the lid at a pawn shop or on eBay.

How did they ruin anything if it’s optional?

Giving people a choice = ruined? Obviously not to the person who made the choice.

I don’t understand the thinking here. You don’t like it? ignore it and move on. No one is forcing you to put an emoji on your case. There is literally no reason why anyone should be upset by this.

I was joking. I even put the "/s" in there.

It's not obvious what the /s refers to. That Lenovo is offering engraving and it's stupid? That Lenovo should copy Apple and offer engraving?

You said you think it's stupid. It's apparently not stupid to Lenovo's stodgy corporate customers.
